David McCullough's 5 Lessons Every High School Student Should Learn
First, don't memorize dates and don't memorize quotations. You can look them up. What matters is what happens and why. 1) Understand that the United States of American did not begin with the Declaration of Independence. 2) Learn history through other means than books and teachers. I would like them to learn history through music, through plays, by doing drawings, through architecture. 3) Take on the lab technique. A teacher, Jim Percoco, does this by having students study statues. Give students a photograph or show them a building, or street corner, or neighborhood, and make a mini little documentary or write a play about it or write a paper about it. Don't give students everything. Let them figure it out. 4) Finally, let them have the chance to work with original documents or the nearest facsimile possible. Let them see that these were written by real people, with a paper and pen. 5) Take them to places where things happen. Take them to historic sites. Historian David McCullough takes a question from the audience at the National Book Festival, September 25, 2011. This is a clip from the C-Span Video Archive

David McCullough: Americans in Paris
When historian David McCullough announced his intention to write a book about Americans in Paris, his interest was in Americans who went to Paris in the years between 1830 and 1900, not, as he observed, "to make a social splash, but with the ambition to excel. The old world was the new world to them," says the author. McCullough discusses his latest work, "The Greater Journey: Americans in Paris." Speaker Biography: Librarian of Congress James H. Billington has called David McCullough the "citizen chronicler" for his meticulously researched and beautifully written historical books, such as the Pulitzer Prize winners "Truman" and "John Adams," the latter of which became an Emmy Award-winning miniseries on HBO. He is also a two-time winner of the National Book Award, for "The Path Between the Seas" and "Mornings on Horseback." His newest book is "The Greater Journey: Americans in Paris" (Simon & Schuster). McCullough has also received the National Book Foundation Distinguished Contribution to American Letters Award, the National Humanities Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

David McCullough - Christmas With the Mormon Tabernacle Choir (2009) - I'll Be Home for Christmas
"I'll Be Home for Christmas" is a Christmas song recorded in 1943 by Bing Crosby who scored a top ten hit with the song. "I'll Be Home for Christmas" has since gone on to become a Christmas standard. The song is sung from the point of view of an overseas soldier during WWII, writing a letter to his family. In the message, he tells the family that he will be coming home, and to prepare the holiday for him including requests for "snow", "mistletoe", and "presents on the tree". The song ends on a melancholy note, with the soldier saying "I'll be home for Christmas, if only in my dreams." The song was written by the American lyricist Kim Gannon, and the Jewish-American composer Walter Kent. Buck Ram, who previously wrote a poem and song with the same title, was credited as a co-writer of the song following a lawsuit. The original 1943 release of the song by Bing Crosby on Decca Records listed only Walter Kent and Kim Gannon as the songwriters on the record label. Later pressings added the name of Buck Ram to the songwriting credit.
