Gregory "Greg" Howe (born December 8, 1963) is an American guitarist and composer. As an active musician for nearly thirty years, he has released nine studio albums in addition to collaborating with a wide variety of artists.^[2]

Recording career[link]

After leaving high school and playing the club circuit around the New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania areas with his brother Albert (a singer) for most of the 1980s, Greg Howe officially began his solo career after sending a demo tape to Shrapnel Records in 1987, upon which he was immediately signed by founder Mike Varney. His self-titled debut album was released in 1988, during the popular shred era, and went on to become his highest-selling album;^[1] a Guitar World article in 2009 would rank it as tenth in the all-time top ten list of shred albums.^[3]

The following year, he joined with Albert to form a Van Halen-inspired hard rock group named Howe II. Through Shrapnel, they released two studio albums: High Gear (1989) and Now Hear This (1991).^[4] His second solo album, Introspection, was released in 1993. At this point his style had changed radically from the straightforward instrumental rock of both his debut and the Howe II albums, to a more jazz fusion-laden approach which remains unique and identifiable to this day; some of his signature traits being fast left-hand legato passages (having been influenced greatly by jazz fusion guitarist Allan Holdsworth),^[5] and the frequent use of tapping and odd time signatures.

A trio of albums spanning the middle part of the decade—Uncertain Terms (1994), Parallax (1995) and Five (1996)—were all a consistent evolution of the sound he had adopted on Introspection. During this time he collaborated twice with fellow guitarist Richie Kotzen for the albums Tilt and Project in 1995 and 1997, respectively.^[1] He then briefly dabbled with a heavier, neo-classical metal style for his 1999 release, Ascend, which featured keyboardist Vitalij Kuprij. However, he has since spoken of his dissatisfaction for that project, as well as an earlier collaboration on Kuprij's own album, High Definition (1997).^[1]

After switching labels to Shrapnel's jazz-oriented counterpart, Tone Center Records, he returned to his familiar style with Hyperacuity (2000), which still stands as some of his most prominent experimentation with jazz fusion. After a highly troubled recording process for Extraction (2003), which featured drummer Dennis Chambers and bassist Victor Wooten,^[6][7] he took an extended hiatus from recording solo material until the release of his ninth studio album, Sound Proof, in 2008.

Currently residing in Long Beach, California (having previously lived in Easton, Pennsylvania until around 2006),^[8] Howe continues to work as a session musician and producer, as well as providing online guitar lessons through his official website.^[9] From 2010 onwards he has toured Europe for the first time, having long stated a desire to tour the continent as a solo artist. According to a 2011 interview, he is working on a new studio album which will feature vocals for the first time since the days of Howe II.^[10]

Session and touring career[link]

Amidst his solo career, Howe has continuously made himself available as a session musician for many of the world's biggest pop stars. Most recently he has played with artists such as Christina Aguilera, Rihanna, Lady Antebellum, P Diddy, T-Pain and Salt-n-Pepa. In 1996, he replaced Jennifer Batten as primary guitarist during the Asian and European legs of singer Michael Jackson's HIStory World Tour. He would later provide guitar duties for singer Enrique Iglesias in 2000, which culminated in a series of high-profile televised performances and a European tour. The following two years saw Howe recruited as lead guitarist for boy band *NSYNC during two tours of the United States. After singer Justin Timberlake left *NSYNC, Howe continued to tour with him in 2003.

Eight years later, Howe teamed up again with Timberlake, as well as rapper T.I., for a performance at the 2009 Grammy Awards.^[11] In the same year, Howe played as part of keyboardist/violinist Eddie Jobson's Ultimate Zero Project, in a line-up which included bassists Tony Levin and John Wetton, and drummers Marco Minnemann and Simon Phillips.^[12] In 2011, Howe toured Italy and Israel with drummer Dennis Chambers and bassist Stu Hamm.^[13] In November of that year, Michael Jackson's second posthumous album, Immortal, featured Howe's playing on "Dancing Machine" and "Beat It".^[14]

Andrew Howe (born 12 May 1985) is an Italian athlete who specializes in the long jump. He won this event as well as the 200 metres at the 2004 World Junior Championships. He was successful at senior level at a young age, winning a long jump bronze at the 2006 IAAF World Indoor Championships before becoming the European Champion later that year. In 2007 he become the European Indoor Champion and won the silver medal at the 2007 World Championships in Athletics.

A combination of injuries ruled him out for most of the 2008 and 2009 seasons. He returned to action in 2010 and became the Italian champion, representing his country at the 2010 European Athletics Championships.

Howe was born in Los Angeles, United States, to Renée Felton, an American hurdler who is a former United States Junior College National Record in the 100 meter hurdles and an avid participant of long distance amateur sports such as the Ironman triathlon. In 1992, Andrew moved to Rieti, Italy with her after she married to Italian, Ugo Besozzi.

His international breakthrough came at the 2006 World Indoor Championships, where he finished third. Later the same year he won the gold medal at the European Championships.

In the 2007 European Athletics Indoor Championships, he won gold with a fifth round leap of 8.30, after trailing Greek competitor, and eventual silver medalist, Loúis Tsátoumas in the first four jumps.

In the 2007 World Championships, he won the silver medal with a sixth jump of 8.47, achieving the Italian national record and his personal best. He was only surpassed by Irving Saladino at his last jump with 8.57 m. He brought the year to a close with a win at the 2007 IAAF World Athletics Final, becoming the first Italian to win at the competition and only the second to win an event at an IAAF season-end contest. He was given the first European Athletics Rising Star Award in recognition of his achievements that season.^[1]

Following this, his 2008 season was blighted by a shoulder injury and then hamstring problems,^[2] and he did not make it past the qualifiers of the long jump at the 2008 Summer Olympics. The next season held further physical problems for the Italian and surgery on his Achilles tendon ruled him out for the year.

He returned to action in July 2010 with a win in the long jump at the Italian Athletics Championships.^[3] He attempted to defend his continental title at the 2010 European Athletics Championships, but his jump of 8.12 m brought him fifth place and Christian Reif succeeded him to the European title.^[4] Nearing the end of the season, Howe ran in the 200 m at the Notturna di Milano – marking a return to an event in which he had competed sparely. In a return to form, he won the race and although he eased up in the final metres he recorded a time of 20.30 seconds – two hundredths away from his long-standing personal best.^[5]

He completed his winter training in Qatar and at the University of California, Los Angeles. At the start of the outdoor season he ran a personal best and European-leading time of 45.70 seconds over 400 metres and then took a surprise win over 200 m at the Golden Gala in Rome with a run of 20.31 seconds (also a season's best for Europe).^[6][7]

Jeremy Howe (born 29 June 1990) is a professional Australian rules footballer currently playing with the Melbourne Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL) and their affiliate club, Casey Scorpions in the Victorian Football League.^[1]

Originally from Dodges Ferry in the Southern Football League, Howe represented Tasmania at the 2009 AFL National Under 18 Championships, but was not selected in the 2009 AFL Draft. The fourth-year electrical apprentice subsequently moved to Tasmanian Football League side Hobart for the 2010 season. A full-forward, Howe made an immediate impact for the Tigers, becoming well known for his bleached blonde hair and high-flying marks.^[2] A player with impressive kicking skills and a big leap,^[3] Howe was recruited by Melbourne with the 33rd selection in the 2010 AFL Draft.^[4] His spectacular marking has drawn comparison with fellow Tasmanian and former Melbourne high-flyer, Russell Robertson.^[3]

Howe made his debut against Essendon in Round 11 of the 2011 AFL season.^[5] Gathering 19 disposals in an impressive debut, Howe kicked his first AFL goal with a "miraculous snap" in the third quarter, helping Melbourne to a 33 point victory.^[6]

Darcus Howe (born 1943) is a British broadcaster, writer,^[1] and civil liberties campaigner. Originally from Trinidad, he moved to America in the 1960s, then arrived in England intending to study law, where he joined the British Black Panthers, the first such branch of the organization outside the United States.^[2] He came to public attention in 1970 as one of the Mangrove Nine, when he marched to the police station in Notting Hill, London, to protest against police raids of the Mangrove restaurant, and again in 1981 when he organized a 20,000-strong "Black People's March" in protest at the handling of the investigation into the New Cross Fire, in which 13 black teenagers died.^[3]

He is a former editor of Race Today, and former chair of the Notting Hill Carnival. He is best known in the UK for his Black on Black series on Channel 4; his current affairs programme, Devil's Advocate; and his work with Tariq Ali on Bandung File. His television work also includes White Tribe (2000), a look at modern Britain and its loss of "Englishness"; Slave Nation (2001); and Who You Callin' a Nigger? (2004).^[4] He writes columns for New Statesman and The Voice.

Early life and early career[link]

Howe was born in Trinidad, the son of an Anglican priest. He first moved to England at the age of 18,^[5] arriving on the SS Antilles at Southampton.^[6] He intended to study law at Middle Temple, but left the law for journalism. He returned to Trinidad, where his uncle and mentor, radical intellectual CLR James, inspired him to combine writing with political activism. A brief spell as assistant editor on the Trinidad trade union paper The Vanguard was followed by a return to Britain, where he served as editor of the magazine Race Today from 1973 to 1985.^[7]

He became a member of the British Black Panther Movement, and in the summer of 1970 took part in a protest against the frequent police raids of the Mangrove restaurant in Notting Hill, where he worked on the till. The restaurant had become a meeting place for black people, serving as what Howe called the "headquarters of radical chic".^[8] It was raided 12 times between January 1969 and July 1970 by police looking for drugs, and so 150 demonstrators marched on the local police station in protest, a demonstration that ended in violence. Six weeks later, Howe and eight others—the Mangrove Nine—were arrested for riot, affray and assault.^[9] He and four of his co-defendants were acquitted of all charges after a celebrated 55-day trial in 1971 at the Old Bailey, which included an unsuccessful demand by Howe for an all-black jury, and fighting in the dock when some of the defendants tried to punch the prison officers.^[10] The judge stated that there was "evidence of racial hatred on both sides"—the first acknowledgement from a British judge that there was racial hatred in the Metropolitan Police Service.^[11]

In 1977 Howe was sentenced to three months' imprisonment for assault, after a racially motivated altercation at a London Underground Station, but was released upon appeal after protests over his arrest.^[12][6] Linton Kwesi Johnson contributed a song, "Man Free (For Darcus Howe)", to the campaign for his release.^[13]

Broadcasting career[link]

In 1982, Howe began his broadcasting career on Channel 4's television series Black on Black, later co-editor with Tariq Ali of Bandung File and more recently White Tribe, a look at modern day Britain and its loss of 'Englishness'. Howe has continued to write in the New Statesman and fronted the Channel 4 current affairs programme Devil's Advocate. He was a keynote speaker at the 2005 Belfast Film Festival's "Film and Racism" seminar and presented his documentary Who You Callin' a Nigger? at the festival.

In October 2005, Howe presented a Channel 4 documentary Son of Mine, about his troubled relationship with his 20-year-old son Amiri, who had been caught handling stolen passports, shoplifting, and accused of attempted rape.^[14][15]

Howe appeared on the discussion programme, Midweek (on BBC Radio 4), to promote the documentary on 19 October 2005 and, live on air, became involved in an angry debate with American comedienne Joan Rivers. The dispute began when Howe suggested that Rivers was offended by the use of the term "black"; Rivers objected strongly to the suggestion that she was racist and accused Howe of having a "chip on his shoulder".^[16]

Howe was one of several public figures who fell foul of perennial satirist and prankster Chris Morris on Morris' show Brass Eye, in the final episode, 'Decline'.

Howe was interviewed by Fiona Armstrong for BBC News on 9 August 2011 during the 2011 England riots.^[17] During the interview, Armstrong twice referred to him as "Marcus Dowe," then asked: "You are not a stranger to riots yourself, I understand, are you? You have taken part in them yourself." Howe denied this, saying: "I have never taken part in a single riot. I've been part of demonstrations that ended up in a conflict. Have some respect for an old West Indian Negro, and stop accusing me of being a rioter. Because you wanted for me to get abusive, you just sound idiotic—have some respect."^[18] The BBC apologised for any offence the interview caused,^[19] and said "it had not intended to show him any disrespect".^[20]

Personal life[link]

Howe has been married three times and has seven children. The 2005 Channel 4 documentary Son of Mine examines Howe's relationship with his 20-year-old son Amiri, who faced jail for charges related to stolen passports.^[21] His daughter Tamara was a director of production for London Weekend Television. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in April 2007 and has since campaigned for more men to get tested.^[22]
