On The Beach (1959) Part 1 of 2 [World Nuclear Holocaust]
Set in 1964, in the months following World War III. The conflict has devastated the northern hemisphere, polluting the atmosphere with nuclear fallout and killing all life. While the bombs were confined to the northern hemisphere, air currents are slowly carrying the fallout south. The only areas still habitable are in the far southern hemisphere, like Australia.
The Australian government arranges for its citizens to receive suicide pills and injections, so that they end things quickly before there is prolonged suffering from the coming radiation sickness. (Starring Eva Gardner, Fred Astaire, Gregory Peck)

On The Beach (1959) - Waltzing Matilda
The Cold War aspects of this movie may be a bit dated, but for those of us of a certain age it is a reminder of the fears we lived under at that time. In retrospect, it may be that Julian was wrong: it may have indeed been the very presence of these terrible weapons that prevented a third world war.
In any case, that aspect of the story never overshadows the movie's underlying theme, which is, rather, how each of us views the sum of our lives as our mortal end approaches. Are we alone? Have we connected with anyone? Have we failed? Have we loved? Have we been loved?
One of the most depressing movies ever made, but a truly great one.

On the Beach Ending Scene
The ending scene from the classic movie of 1959, On the Beach. After a nuclear war, Australia is the last inhabitable place on Earth until the radiation comes. This shows the characters final goodbye's before they die. The last minute shows a very depressing view of a deserted Melbourne. Look for Ava Gardner, Gregory Peck, Fred Astaire, Anthony Perkins and Donna Anderson

I believe that the group in the background is the Sportsmen Quartet, who appeared frequently on the Jack Benny show back then. The soloist is Gurney Bell. Anybody with better information is welcome to correct me.

ON THE BEACH, 1959 movie with funny scenes of butt slapping and grabbing...
On the Beach is a 1959 Sci-Fi, Post-Apocaliptic film set in 1964 in the aftermath of a fictional World War III between the USA and the Soviet Union, starring Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner, it is based on the 1957 novel of the same name by Nevil Shute.
The film is about the nuclear submarine USS SAWFISH and its crew wich arrive to Australia, one the few remaining liveable spots on the earth, Capitain Dwight Towers (Gregory Pack) and his crew arrive and find that Australian society hasn't yet collapsed and they are well received by the australian royal navy.
While in Australia Capitain Towers meets Moira Davidson (Ava Gardner) a beautiful alcoholic young lady who falls in love with him, but he doesn't seem to reciprocate as he still has hope that his wife and children could still be alive in Connecticut, in the meantime they receive a rare morse code from San Diego.
Capitain Towers, his crew and a handful of australian marines are sent to sail to the northern hemisphere to investigate the orignin of this transmission and if the levels of radiation have lowered. In preparation for the radiation's arrival australian government starts producing suicide pills for the population in case the radiation levels in the northern hemisphere won't disperse and reach them provocking a painful death for the population.
The film has some fun scenes such as the ones from this video but it is actually a very sad movie.

On the beach (1959) -

On the Beach Trailer
Well, the world has finally managed to blow itself up. Only Australia has been spared from nuclear destruction and a gigantic wave of radiation is floating in on the breezes. Only 2 months are left. One American sub located in the Pacific has survived and is met with disdain by the Australians when it arrives. All of the calculations of Australia's most renowned scientist (Bryan Brown) says the country is at doomsday - get ready. However, one of his rivals say that is incorrect. He believes that a 1000 people can be relocated into the northern hemisphere, where his assumptions indicate the radiation levels may be lower. The American Captain (Armand Assante) is asked to take a mission to the north to determine which scientist is right (and along the way check out the devastation in Alaska & California - seemingly all bodies and vehicles were disintegrated). However, before the mission, all kinds of bland soap opera relationships are played out. Brown & his ex-fiancee (Rachel Ward) battle it out in a love-hate relationship. Meanwhile she also takes a liking to Assante, who is divided in his loyalties to his men and his love for his now-dead wife and children.
