The Observer-Dispatch is the largest newspaper serving the Utica-Rome metropolitan area in Central New York, circulating in Oneida County, Herkimer County, and parts of Madison County. Based in Utica, New York, the publication is owned by GateHouse Media.
Eliasaph Dorchester founded the weekly Utica Observer in 1817. The Observer became a daily newspaper in 1848 and, after several mergers with other newspapers, became the Observer-Dispatch in 1922. That was also the year the paper was purchased by Frank E. Gannett, who founded the Gannett Company. Gannett owned the newspaper until 2007, when it was purchased by GateHouse Media.
For a time, two daily papers were published – the Daily Press in the morning and the Observer-Dispatch in the afternoon, and those newspapers were awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 1959 for an investigation into local corruption. The two newspapers merged into a single, seven-day morning publication, the Observer-Dispatch, in 1987.

The Mohawk Valley region of the U.S. state of New York is the area surrounding the Mohawk River, sandwiched between the Adirondack Mountains and Catskill Mountains. As of the 2010 United States Census, the region's counties have a combined population of 622,133 people.
The region is a suburban and rural area surrounding the industrialized cities of Schenectady, Utica and Rome, along with other smaller commercial centers. The 5,882 square miles (15,230 km2) area is an important agricultural center and encompasses the heavily forested wilderness areas just to the north that are part of New York's Adirondack Park.
The Mohawk Valley is a natural passageway connecting the Atlantic Ocean, by way of the Hudson Valley with the interior of North America. Native American Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy lived in the region, and in the 17th century immigrants of Dutch, and the 18th century German, and Scottish settled the area, joined by Italians following the rapid industrialization of the mid-19th century. During the 18th Century, the Mohawk Valley was a frontier of great political, military and economic importance. Colonists, such as Phillip Schuyler, Nicholas Herkimer, William Johnson, trading with the Iroquois set the stage for commercial and military competition between European nations, leading to the French and Indian Wars and the American Revolution. Almost 100 battles of the American Revolution were fought in New York State, including the Battle of Oriskany and defense of Fort Stanwix. A series of raids against valley residents took place during the war; led by John Johnson they were collectively known as the "Burning of the Valleys".
The Bureau were a new wave soul group formed in November 1980 in Birmingham, England, when the original lineup of Dexys Midnight Runners split-up. The Bureau retained their Dexys roots and played powerful brass-driven soul sounds.
Ex-Dexys members Pete Williams (bass), Geoff Blythe (tenor sax), Steve Spooner (alto sax), Stoker (drums), and Mick Talbot (keyboards) engaged the services of manager Dave Corke, a previous manager of Dexys Midnight Runners, and promoted concerts in Birmingham to raise money to finance the group.
In December 1980 the band were joined by Rob Jones (guitar and trumpet), and Archie Brown (vocals) from a group called The Upset, which had supported Dexys on tour. The Bureau began rehearsals with a trombonist known only as Jake (formerly of the R&B, soul, funk act Gonzalez), who came and went.
In February 1981 The Bureau signed a deal with record label WEA and recorded their debut single "Only For Sheep/The First One" with producer Pete Winfield (who had produced Dexys' album Searching for the Young Soul Rebels) at London's Vineyard Studios. A video was recorded for "Only For Sheep" before the band left the UK for debut tour dates in the Netherlands and Belgium. Permanent trombone player Paul Taylor was recruited at the eleventh hour and joined the group for the dates. The first ever gig in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands, was reviewed in UK music paper NME and the second gig at the Paradiso Club, Amsterdam, was recorded for Dutch radio. "Only For Sheep" was released in March 1981 and was a hit in Australia, reaching No. 6, but failed to reach the UK Singles Chart.

In June 2012, the Observer-Dispatch embarked on a yearlong project to highlight the cultural diversity of the Mohawk Valley -- an area built up by European immigrants in the 1800s that now welcomes a steady flow of refugees from around the world. Here, the reporters and photographers who covered "Who We Are" reflect on what they learned from the experience.
A dispatch, the car crash
Breathe deep in case it's your last
One more shot, one more fight
You're so wrong, I'm so right
One more drink, I can't think
I'm leaving you tonight
Arriving at the scene
These sirens are deafening
I can't see my car keys
Stop yelling "you love me"
I'm driving, I can't see
I black out indefinitely
And she sits on the edge of a ditch on a state road
Hands on her face and her eyes on her temples
Catatonic regretful
And the words on her lips keep them pressed to the concrete
Bearing the name of a silent apology
"Baby I'm sorry"
One more shot, one more fight
You're so wrong, I'm so right
One more drink, I can't think
I'm leaving you tonight
A dispatch, the car crash
Breathe deep in case it's your last
Arriving at the scene
