Protesters raise Russian flag in Ukrainian city
Dozens of people are hurt in clashes as pro-Russia activists storm the regional government's headquarters in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv and raise the Russian flag Pro-Russian demonstrations broke out in major cities in eastern and southern Ukraine on Saturday, as Russian President Vladimir Putin was granted parliamentary permission to use troops to protect Russians in the country. Demonstrators in the country's second largest city of Kharkhiv raised the Russian flag over the city hall after a demonstration turned violent. Russia supporters clashed with backers of the Ukrainian government who were guarding the building and government supporters were left beaten and bloodied. Ukrainian media also reported pro-Russians demonstrations in Donetsk and Odessa. All three cities have large Russian-speaking populations. Saturday's developments were a marked escalation of conflict between the two countries, which started when Ukraine's pro-Russian president was pushed out by a protest movement of people who wanted closer ties to Europe. Support for Russia remains strong in the industrial eastern regions, which depend on Russian natural gas supplies and the vast Russian market. Many in the mainly Russia-speaking east and south want close ties with Russia. Ukraine: Russian flag raised in Odessa
Protesters raised the Russian flag Monday at the Odessa Regional Institute of Public Administration building. About 500 pro-Russian demonstrators gathered at the building at 1 p.m. local time (1100 GMT), demanding that deputies resign. Before the Ukrainian flag was lowered, several men burned the flag of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. A scuffle broke out just before the Russian flag was raised. Demonstrators are currently blocking the entrances and exits to the building to prevent deputies from being able to leave. Ukrainian Flag Is Flying over Canadian Parliament
Ukrainian Flag Is Flying over Canadian Parliament
The Canadian parliament condemned Russia's military intervention in Crimea and expressed its support by flying Ukrainian flag over Canadian parliament. Full Story: The flag of Ukraine was flying on Tuesday (March 4) above the Canadian Parliament building in Ottawa. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper's official Twitter account read: "Ukrainian flag being proudly flown on Parliament Hill to demonstrate our solidarity with people of Ukraine". Harper joined in a chorus of western leaders warning Russian troops to pull out of Crimea. Canada has recalled its ambassador to Russia for consultations about the crisis in Ukraine on March 1 and, with the United States, is freezing preparations for the Group of Eight summit in Sochi. Harper, who talked with U.S. President Barack Obama and to the interim Ukrainian president, said Canada condemned Russia's intervention in Ukraine in the strongest possible terms. "President Putin actions have put his country on the course of diplomatic and economic isolation that could well see Russia exit the G8 entirely," said Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Canada is home to the world's third largest Ukrainian population, outside of Ukraine and Russia. On Sunday, people in the eastern city of Kerch marched on the city hall to pull down the Ukrainian flag and replace it with that of Russia. The protesters unfurled banners saying "Shame intervention", "Crimea for peace" and "Fascism will not pass." Kerch citizens are mostly Russian-speakers and have strong cultural ties to Moscow. The protest comes a day after people in the same city clashed with pro-EU protesters, telling them to leave Kerch. Ukraine has been rocked by anti-government protests since President Victor Yanukovych refrained from signing an Association Agreement with the EU on November 29, 2013, in favor of closer ties with Russia. Yanukovych has reportedly departed from Kiev, but his whereabouts and legitimacy are still unclear. Yanukovych said on Saturday that he had been forced to leave Kiev because of "vandalism, crime and a coup." "I don't plan to leave the country. I don't plan to resign. I am the legitimate president," he stressed. Ukraine's acting President Oleksander Turchinov announced on Sunday that lawmakers must form a national unity government in the Eastern European country by Tuesday following a vote to oust President Yanukovych.- published: 24 Feb 2014

Day of Ukrainian Flag
Day of Ukrainian Flag
"Day of Ukrainian Flag" Ukraine marks the 21st anniversary of state flag establishing. On January the 28th in 1992 the Ukrainian Parliament adopted the yellow and blue ensign as a national flag. It throws back in pre-Christian times, when blue and yellow colours symbolized fire and water. According to modern interpretation these colours symbolize a wheat field and sky above it. Under this banner Ukrainian people strived for the independent state. Our journalists know more. Banner with two equal horizontal bands of blue and yellow colours is one of three official state symbols of Ukraine. From time immemorial the flag was sacred, without it the army did not make an attack and did not join a battle. In times of Kyiv Rus red, white, blue and sometimes yellow flags predominated. The first attempt to create a yellow-blue flag, looking like the modern one, was made by the Holovna Ruska Rada, political organization of Ukrainians in western Ukraine that began struggle for the revival of Ukrainian nation. Andriy Rukkas, Assistant Professor, Department of History, Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University Members of the Holovna Ruska Rada participated in Slavic Congress in Prague. Accordingly, the need to have certain symbols for representation appeared. The golden lion on a blue background, historical emblem of Galician land, was chosen. So modern Ukrainian yellow-blue flag derived from the golden lion on a blue background. On March the 22nd in 1918 the Central Council, Ukrainian parliament of those times, adopted the Law on the State Flag of the Republic, approving the yellow and blue flag as a national symbol. However, there were the discussions between supporters of blue-yellow and yellow-blue colour combination in the flag. However, soon the dispute ended by the adoption of blue and yellow banner as the national flag of Ukraine. Andriy Rukkas, Assistant Professor, Department of History, Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University There was a dispute: what colour should be on the top, which at the bottom? Yellow or blue? As there are different heraldic traditions. It can be the background colour or the main colour. But it is not the law which should be clearly followed. In January 1918 the blue and yellow flag, with the blue colour on the top, was adopted by the Central Council. From that time we have such colour combination. As for the yellow-blue combination many interpretations can be seen. These colours may be symbols of greatness. However the historical science of heraldry treats blue colour as a sign of honesty, loyalty and integrity, associated with the sky. Yellow colour symbolizes power, strength, wealth, justice, and is connected with the sun. Andriy Molodorych psychologist Blue and yellow colours are a bit close in meaning. The yellow one symbolizes the sun that gives life. This is the most auspicious colour for people. It could be connected with pleasure, happiness and peace. Blue is a strict colour, blue is more superficial, irresponsible. However, it is also a symbol of freedom and happiness. When one looks at the sky, he or she feels almost as a bird. Traditionally the blue and yellow colours of Ukrainian flag are interpreted as a combination of pure, peaceful cloudless sky that stretches above the yellow grain field, a symbol of work and wealth. However, historians say different colours were offered for the approval as national ones. Andriy Rukkas, Assistant Professor, Department of History, Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University There were various ideas in 1989-1991. In the wake of patriotic exaltation the debates over national symbols were organized on the initiative of the Communist Party. We also had the red flag of Soviet republic with a blue stripe at the bottom and a gold hammer and sickle in the top left corner. Some people propose to combine yellow-blue colours with red Soviet flag and symbols. As the crimson is a colour of Cossacks and thus could suit everyone. Subsequently, these ideas were dispelled and the yellow-blue flag was chosen. During 1917--1921, it was the banner of Ukrainian People's Republic, predecessor of modern Ukraine. During the 20th century the yellow-blue flag served as a symbol of Ukrainian national resistance against the Communist party and Nazi occupation. Andriy Rukkas, Assistant Professor, Department of History, Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University These were the Soviet symbols, where the main colour was red and the coat of arms was a hammer and sickle. Other symbols, including national symbols of Ukrainian People's Republic, were perceived negatively. Later the yellow-blue flag was consecrated at the St. Sophia Cathedral. It was brought by the solemn procession from St. Sophia Cathedral to the Kyiv Municipality. But who and where sewed the flag is still a great secret.- published: 23 Aug 2013

In Donetsk, a Ukrainian flag replaces a Russian one over a government building once more. The offices, located in the home city of ousted president Viktor Yanukovych, had been under control of pro-Russian forces since Monday. Police were evacuating the building out of fears it had been booby-trapped. But the tensions are far from over, as rival rallies are scheduled for Wednesday evening. In Crimea, forces believed to be Russian have surrounded the main military bases in the area. The Ukrain... Ukraine: Russian flag raised as activists occupy Lugansk administration
Pro-Russian activists occupied the Lugansk Regional State Administration building, Sunday, after thousands had descended on the building demanding a referendum be held on March 16 to join the Russian Federation. An activist lowered the Ukrainian flag where it was flying from the roof top, replacing it with the Russian tricolour as the crowd below him chanted "Russia, Russia, Referendum." Some 3,000 people took part in the Lugansk protests and about 1,000 have now occupied the building. The pro-Russian activists are also demanding that Mikhail Bolotskikh, the region's Kiev-selected head, step down.
