Wuhayshi's death is a major blow to Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), the terror network's most active branch that had claimed the attack on French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and plotted against international airlines.
"We in Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula mourn to our Muslim nation ... that Abu Baseer Nasser bin Abdul Karim al-Wuhayshi, God rest his soul, passed away in an American strike which targeted him along with two of his mujahideen brothers, may God rest their souls," Khaled Batarfi, a senior member of AQAP, said.

YEMEN - Al-Qaida has confirmed that Nasir al-Wahishi, its No. 2 head and leader of its powerful Yemeni affiliate, was killed in a U.S. airstrike, making it the harshest blow to the global militant network since the killing of Osama bin Laden. In a video statement released by the media wing of Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, as the Yemeni affiliate is known, a senior operative read a statement announcing the death of al-Wahishi, who once served as bin Laden's personal secretary, said his deputy, Qassim al-Raimi, and has been tapped to replace him.
Yemeni security officials had earlier said a U.S. drone strike killed three suspected militants in the al-Qaida-held southern port city of Mukalla last week. U.S. officials had said they were trying to verify whether al-Wahishi had been killed.
Al-Qaida's Yemen affiliate has long been seen as its most lethal, and has been linked to a number of foiled or botched attacks on the United States. In addition to leading the Yemeni affiliate, al-Wahishi also served as deputy to Ayman al-Zawahri, al-Qaida's top leader, who succeeded bin Laden in 2011.
The death of al-Wahishi is the latest in a series of targeted killings of the Yemen affiliate's top leaders, including its most senior military leader Nasr al-Ansi, religious ideologue Ibrahim al-Rubish and others in recent weeks.
Al- Wahishi was among 23 al-Qaida militants who broke out of a detention facility in Yemen's capital, Sanaa, in February 2006. In 2009, al-Wahishi announced the creation of AQAP, which gathered together Yemeni and Saudi militants.
Al-Wahishi's death is a major setback for AQAP, but the group's master bomb-maker, Ibrahim Hassan al-Asiri, is believed to still be alive. He is thought to have designed bombs that were slipped past security and placed on three separate American-bound airplanes, although none of them exploded.

Nasir Abdel Karim al-Wuhayshi (also transliterated as Naser al-Wahishi), alias Abu Basir, is or was a citizen of Yemen and a senior leader of Islamist militant group Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). He once served as Osama bin Laden's secretary and presided over the January 2009 merger of the Saudi Arabian and Yemeni splinters of Al Qaeda into AQAP.Ayman Al-Zawahiri confirmed al-Wahayshi's appointment as leader of AQAP in a video posted online. Both Saudi Arabia and Yemen consider the militant leader to be among their most wanted fugitives.
Nasir al-Wuhayshi served as a private secretary to Osama bin Laden for years in Afghanistan. He left Afghanistan in 2001 and was soon arrested by Iranian authorities, who handed him over to his native Yemen two years later where he was imprisoned without charges. In February 2006, Nasir al-Wuhayshi was one of 23 Yemeni captives who escaped from custody from a maximum security prison in Sana'a.
Al-Wuhayshi became the leader of Al-Qaeda's Yemeni operations after the former leader was killed in a US Predator drone strike in 2002. His authority seems to derive mostly from his long proximity to Osama bin Laden.

(CNN)Al Qaeda's second in command, Nasir al-Wuhayshi, has been killed in a drone strike in Yemen, dealing a heavy setback to the leadership of the international terrorist group. Al-Wuhayshi was the top leader of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP, one of the most dangerous and dynamic branches of the jihadist network. His death is "the biggest blow against al Qaeda since the death of (Osama) bin Laden," said CNN terrorism analyst Paul Cruickshank. Al-Wuhayshi was al Qaeda's "leading light" and was one day expected to take over from its current global chief, Ayman al-Zawahiri, said Cruickshank. Two Yemeni security officials told CNN on Monday that al-Wuhayshi was killed Friday in a suspected U.S. drone strike in Yemen's Hadhramaut region. On Tuesday, AQAP released a video statement announcing that its leader and two aides had died. The speaker said that al-Wuhayshi would be succeeded by the group's military chief, Qasm al-Rimi, also known as Abu Hureira al-Sanaani. -

"Top al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) leader Nasir al-Wuhayshi has died in a drone strike. Al-Wuhayshi was the No. 2 leader of al Qaeda globally and the head of AQAP.
Two Yemeni national security officials told CNN that al-Wuhayshi was killed Friday in a suspected U.S. drone strike in Yemen's Hadramout region. A few hours later, the militant group itself confirmed the death.
In a video message released Tuesday, AQAP said al-Wuhayshi was killed along with two aides. Military chief Qasm al-Rimi (also known as Abu Hureira al-Sanaani) will take over as successor, the group said.

MUKALLA, YEMEN — Al Qaeda in Yemen confirmed that Nasser al-Wuhayshi, its leader, has been killed by what was suspected to be a U.S. drone strike.
According to Reuters, Al-Wuhayshi is believed to have been killed in a strike on Tuesday, June 9. Analysts suggest that the death of Al-Wuhayshi would be a major blow against Al Qaeda. He had previously claimed responsibility for the murders in the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo earlier this year, as well as other attacks.
The BBC reports that Qasim al-Raymi has been named as his successor.

MUKALLA, YEMEN — Al Qaeda in Yemen confirmed that Nasser al-Wuhayshi, its leader, has been killed by what was suspected to be a U.S. drone strike.
According to Reuters, Al-Wuhayshi is believed to have been killed in a strike on Tuesday, June 9. Analysts suggest that the death of Al-Wuhayshi would be a major blow against Al Qaeda. He had previously claimed responsibility for the murders in the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo earlier this year, as well as other attacks.

On March 20, 2014, al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) "Al-Malahem Foundation for Media Production" issued the first installment of a mini documentary series on the life of late leader and former Guantanamo Bay detainee, Saudi national Sa'eed al-Shehri (Abu Sufyan al-Azdi), who was killed in a US drone strike in July 2013. Born in 1971 and raised in Riyadh, al-Shehri's early career as a bodyguard to Saudi royalty -- part of the elite al-Nokhbah Unit, in ways similar to the Secret Service -- signaled a good future. He was a determined and well trained leader early on. But as the video shows, al-Shehri was politically oriented, with concerns about international grievances shared by the likes of al-Qaida -- especially the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Gul and Jones talk about how intelligence runs al-Qaeda in Syria and are used to perpetuate a manufactured war on terrorism.
In a 2004 BBC article entitled "Al-Qaeda's origins and links", the BBC wrote:
During the anti-Soviet jihad Bin Laden and his fighters received American and Saudi funding. Some analysts believe Bin Laden himself had security training from the CIA.[1]
Robin Cook, Foreign Secretary in the UK from 1997--2001, and Leader of the House of Commons and Lord President of the Council from 2001--2003, believed the CIA had provided arms to the Arab Mujahideen, including Osama bin Laden, writing, "Bin Laden was, though, a product of a monumental miscalculation by western security agencies. Throughout the 80s he was armed by the CIA and funded by the Saudis to wage jihad against the Russian occupation of Afghanistan."[2]
In conversation with former British Defence Secretary Michael Portillo, two-time Prime Minister of Pakistan Benazir Bhutto said Osama bin Laden was initially pro-American.[3] Prince Bandar bin Sultan of Saudi Arabia, has also stated that bin Laden once expressed appreciation for the United States' help in Afghanistan. On CNN's Larry King program he said:[4]
Bandar bin Sultan: This is ironic. In the mid-'80s, if you remember, we and the United - Saudi Arabia and the United States were supporting the Mujahideen to liberate Afghanistan from the Soviets. He [Osama bin Laden] came to thank me for my efforts to bring the Americans, our friends, to help us against the atheists, he said the communists. Isn't it ironic?
Larry King: How ironic. In other words, he came to thank you for helping bring America to help him.
Bandar bin Sultan: Right.
According to author David N. Gibbs "a considerable body of circumstantial evidence suggests ... direct Agency support for Bin Laden's activities."[5] Both Bin Laden and the CIA "held accounts in the Bank for Credit and Commerce International (BCCI)."[5] "Bin Laden worked especially closely with Gulbuddin Hekmatyar"[6] who Gibbs calls "the CIA's favored Mujahiddin commander". Gibbs quotes Le Monde as saying bin Laden was "recruited by the CIA" in 1979,[5][7] Associated Press as saying a former bin Laden aide told them that in 1989 the U.S. shipped high-powered sniper rifles to a Mujahiddin faction that included bin Laden,[5][8] and Jane's Intelligence Review as stating Bin Laden "worked in close association with U.S. agents" in raising money for the Mujahiddin from "vast family connections" near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.[5][9]
Former FBI translator and Whistleblower Sibel Edmonds, interviewed by Brad Friedman on the The Mike Malloy Show on June 2009 has stated : "I have information about things that our government has lied to us about. I know. For example, to say that since the fall of the Soviet Union we ceased all of our intimate relationship with Bin Laden and the Taliban - those things can be proven as lies, very easily, based on the information they classified in my case, because we did carry very intimate relationship with these people, and it involves Central Asia, all the way up to September 11.
U.S. government officials and a number of other parties maintain that the U.S. supported only the indigenous Afghan mujahideen. They deny that the CIA or other American officials had contact with the Afghan Arabs (foreign mujahideen) or Bin Laden, let alone armed, trained, coached or indoctrinated them. Scholars and reporters have called the idea of CIA-backed Afghan Arabs (foreign mujahideen) "nonsense",[11] "sheer fantasy",[12] and "simply a folk myth
