MaximsNewsNetwork: LEBANON: UN SPECIAL COORDINATOR MICHAEL WILLIAMS & UNIFIL
MaximsNewsNetwork: 10 November 2009 - UNTV - UNIFIL: UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Michael Williams says that the UN is looking forward to working with the new government but more needs to be done to safeguard what's been achieved over the past three years in southern Lebanon.
A senior United Nations official warned today (10 November) that despite recent worrying incidents in southern Lebanon, where Israel and Hizbollah militants battled fiercely three years ago, talk of a new war is alarmist even if all sides must do more to translate the cessation of hostilities into a permanent ceasefire.
After briefing the Security Council on the latest developments, Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Michael Williams told reporters that in the period under review just now by the Council, the past four months there have been a number of serious incidents in South Lebanon and regular and some cases daily violations of 1701 that of course concern and raise the specter of a potential escalation.
Despite the rocket launches into Israel, the almost daily Israeli flights over Lebanon, the arms depot maintained by Hizbollah and the apparently Israeli surveillance equipment left on Lebanese territory, Williams said the cessation of hostilities that followed the adoption of resolution 1701 has actually held remarkably well, calling this a tribute to the UN peacekeeping force known as UNIFIL, the Lebanese and the Israelis.
Resolution 1701, adopted by the Council in August 2006, called for an end to hostilities between Israel and Hizbollah, respect for the so-called Blue Line separating the Israeli and Lebanese sides, disarming of militias and an end to arms smuggling. Hizbollah, which has not disarmed, is part of a new unity government formed in Lebanon yesterday.
Williams called for more to be done to safeguard what has been achieved in the past three years and stressed the need for more tangible steps towards a permanent ceasefire and a long-term solution.
He congratulated the new national unity government, noting the challenges facing it in the economic, political and social fields as well as in exercising its authority throughout the whole country.
Immediately afterwards, Syrias Ambassador Bashar Ja'afari told reporters that Syria thought that Williams report to the Security Council should have shed more light over the Israeli violations of the Lebanon sovereignty, and should have focused more on the Israeli activities of intelligence deep inside the Lebanese territory and even within the area where the UNIFIL itself is deployed.
In a press statement released yesterday (9 November), the UN Secretary-General welcomed the formation of a national unity Government in Lebanon. He expressed his satisfaction that, five months after the parliamentary elections of 7 June, Lebanese political leaders had been able to reach agreement on the formation of a cabinet. The Secretary-General hoped that Lebanese political leaders will continue to work together in a spirit of unity, dialogue and cooperation.

Ban calls on new Lebanese cabinet to fulfil terms ending Israeli-Hizbollah war
United Nations, New York, 10 November 2009 - In a statement issued yesterday afternoon, the Secretary-General welcomed the formation of a national unity government in Lebanon. He expresses his satisfaction that, five months after the parliamentary elections of 7 June, Lebanese political leaders have been able to reach agreement on the formation of a cabinet. The Secretary-General hopes that Lebanese political leaders will continue to work together in a spirit of unity, dialogue and cooperation.
The Secretary-General calls on the new Government of Lebanon to recommit to the full implementation of Security Council resolution 1701. He also urges the new Government to quickly take up the challenges that remain to consolidating both the sovereignty of Lebanon and the institutional capacity of the Lebanese state, as called for in the Taif Agreement and Security Council resolutions.
The Security Council also discussed the formation of the new government in Lebanon, in consultations about the implementation of resolution 1701.
Michael Williams, the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, briefed Council members. He presented the Secretary-Generals latest report on resolution 1701, in which the Secretary-General expresses his serious concern at the recent incidents that have taken place in the area of operations of the UN Interim Force, UNIFIL. The Secretary-General condemns all violations of resolution 1701 and calls for increased vigilance.
Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Edmond Mulet also briefed the Security Council on UNIFILs work.
Mr. Williams has said that he will speak to reporters at the Council stakeout once consultations have finished.

CNN - Eritrea human trafficking by the PFDJ government to Sinai
by Frederik Pleitgen and Mohammed Fadel Fahmy, CNN
Editor's note: Watch the CNNI documentary "Stand in the Sinai" on Friday September 21 at 1530 and 2030 GMT.
The area of Al Mehdia near Egypt's border with Israel is a lawless place even by Northern Sinai's standards.
There is no police force and a military offensive launched recently after a deadly string of militant attacks on Egyptian border guards, has not stopped the illicit trade that flourishes in this area.
Tankers full of fuel still make their way to smuggling tunnels leading to Gaza in broad daylight and marijuana fields are cultivated with elaborate irrigation systems in the middle of the desert.
Last year CNN visited the region as part of the Freedom Project spotlighting the depths that the traffickers have sunk. Now we revisit the remote region to see Bedouins tackling the trafficking on their doorstep.
Sinai Tragedy: Eritrea Tyrant's Hands In Human Trafficking
2 November 2011
The tragic saga of young Eritrean refugees in the Sinai desert can neither be understood completely nor explained definitively without taking into account Eritrea tyrant Isias Afewarki's irrefutable involvement in human trafficking regarding this matter. Below is, for the record, an excerpt from the report of the UN Somalia Eritrea Monitoring Group (UN SEMG) about tyrant Afewarki's involvement not only in this matter but also in weapons smuggling in the Sinai. The exerpts can be found on pp. 109-110 and 96.
422. According to former Eritrean military officials and international human rights activists, military officers involved in the practice charge roughly $3,000 a head for each person exiting Eritrea. Eritreans seeking to leave the country illegally (i.e. without an exit visa), and who can afford to pay these fees, often choose to do so rather than risk imprisonment.
423. In some cases, however, smugglers may demand an additional ransom payment up to $20,000 per head in order to release their charges. An Eritrean directly involved in smuggling operations into Egypt explained to the Monitoring Group how family members are required to send the funds via money transfer agencies to Eritrean officials operating in the Eritrean embassy in Egypt, and in Israel, in order to secure the release of their relatives.359
424. Although the Government of Eritrea prohibits human smuggling, and has reportedly imprisoned some officials for taking part in it, senior Government and/or
party officials linked to General Kifle's command profit from the practice.360 The Monitoring Group has obtained details of a Swiss bank account into which the proceeds from smuggling have been deposited and has provided the Swiss authorities with information related to this account, together with the personal and contact details of the Swiss-based coordinator of this trafficking ring and details of the coordinator's Egypt-based associates.
Excerpt of Weapons smuggling network [page 96]
360. On 28 March 2009, according to a former Eritrean military officer with current contacts within the Eritrean Defence Force, a convoy comprising ethnic Rashaida drivers, a Palestinian individual and Lebanese passengers travelled in convoy from Aswan in Egypt towards Sinai. The convoy carried 45 anti-tank weapons and 25 surface-to-air missiles in addition to personal weapons used by the guards of the convoy.293 The source told the Monitoring Group that the convoy was led by an Eritrean military officer trained in the Syrian Arab Republic.294 Multiple sources interviewed by the Monitoring Group have independently confirmed that Eritrea retains a number of military officers either based in the Syrian Arab Republic or trained in that country.295
361. On 7 February 2011, a fighter from a Sudanese armed group once supported by Eritrea witnessed the passing of a similar convoy at the Sudanese-Egyptian border near the town of Hala'ib. The convoy was made up of approximately 20 four-wheel drive vehicles split into three groups and driving several kilometres away from each other, all without number plates. The individuals on board appeared to be a mix of Rashaida and Middle Easterners, and many of them were armed with personal weapons.296
362. An Eritrean source, who claims to have long been engaged in people smuggling activities on behalf of General Teklai Kifle "Manjus" (see paras. 421-424 below), told the Monitoring Group that he was first deployed into Egypt in a convoy carrying weapons in 2008. According to the source, his contacts confirm that Eritrean agents based in Egypt were continuing to coordinate routine trafficking of people and arms via Sinai in 2011.297
363. In order to further pursue this line of enquiry, the Monitoring Group has asked the Egyptian authorities for additional details relating to interdiction of such smuggling activities, including media reports of a convoy reportedly attacked byEgyptian forces in March 2011,298 but had yet to receive a response at the time of the submission of the present report.

Saadah(Zaidiya Shias),Yemen. The Untold Story.flv by Facebook/Vaseelah Yehi Hain
Saadah is not a small place, but the largest in the North Yemen. It began in June 2004 when dissident cleric Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi, head of the Shia Zaidiyyah sect, launched an uprising against the Yemeni government. Most of the fighting has taken place in Sa'dah Governorate in northwestern Yemen although some of the fighting spread to neighboring governorates Hajjah, 'Amran, al-Jawf and the Saudi province of Jizan. In August 2009, the Yemeni army launched a fresh offensive against Shia rebels in the northern Sa'ada province. Hundreds of thousands of people were displaced by the fighting. The conflict took on an international dimension on 4 November 2009 as clashes broke out between the northern rebels and Saudi security forces along the two countries' common border and Saudis launched an anti-Houthi offensive. The rebels accuse Saudi Arabia of supporting the Yemeni government in attacks against them. The Saudi government denied this. Houthi leaders claim that U.S. involvement in war started on 14 December when the U.S. launched 28 air raids. During Yemen's 1994 civil war, the Wahhabis, an Islamic group adhering to a strict version of Sunni Islam found in neighboring Saudi Arabia, helped the government in its fight against the secessionist south. Zaydis complain the government has subsequently allowed the Wahabis too strong a voice in Yemen. Saudi Arabia, for its part, worries that strife instigated by the Shia sect so close to Yemen's border with Saudi Arabia could stir up groups in Saudia itself. On May 21, the government released estimates of the impact of the rebellion, announcing that it was responsible for 552 deaths, 2,708 injures, and over USD 270 million in economic damages. U.S. President Barack Obama claimed he had authorised the strikes against al-Qaeda. On 20 December, Saudi air strike killed some civilians. According to a spokesman for the Houthis, a Saudi attack killed 54 people in the town of Al Nadheer in the northern province of Sa'dah. The fighting between Yemeni and Saudi forces and Houthis killed at least 119 Yemeni government forces, 263 Houthis, 277 civilians and 7 foreign civilians. Saudi casualties were confirmed at 82 at the time. With more soldiers killed in subsequent clashes and missing soldiers being found dead, however, the casualties rose to 133 killed by January 23, 2010. The number of missing was put at six. In early January 2010, the Houthis chose Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani to mediate in their political standoff with the Yemeni government and to find a solution to the conflict. This choice was criticized by Saudi cleric Mohammad al-Arifi, a preacher at Riyadh's central mosque, who dismissed al-Sistani as "an infidel and debauched." The remarks by the Saudi cleric were considered extremely insulting by Shi'as around the world, causing major outrage in some Shi'a populated countries like Iraq, Iran and Lebanon. On December 2009, According to The New York Times, the United States has provided weapons and logistical support to Yemeni government strikes against suspected hide-outs of so-called Al Qaeda within its borders. The officials said that the American support was approved by President Obama and came at the request of the Yemeni government. Houthis claimed in a statement that the U.S. has used modern fighter jets and bombers in its offensive against the Yemen fighters. Houthi leaders however claim that US involvement started on 14 December when the US launched 28 air raids. At least 120 people were killed and 44 injured by the alleged US air raids on the regions of Amran, Hajjah and Sa'ada in North Yemen, a Houthi leader was quoted as saying: "The US air force perpetrated an appalling massacre against citizens in the north of Yemen as it launched air raids on various populated areas, markets, refugee camps and villages along with Saudi warplanes, The savage crime committed by the US air force shows the real face of the United States. It cancels out much touted American claims of human rights protection, promotion of freedoms of citizens as well as democracy.

Lebanese mark Independence Day
November 22nd is the Lebanese independence day, the day lebanese people were able to liberate themselves from 23 years of French mandate and built a democratic republic with a parliamentary system of government. Lebanese celebrates this day every year with a parade for the Lebanese army attended by high-ranking officials including Michel Suleiman the Lebanese president, Nabi Berry, Parliament speaker and Najib Mikati the prime minister. Since Lebanon got its independence in 1943 , the lebanese territories were never far from conflict. Lebanon was invaded several times by Israel and was liberated in 25 may 2000. The last Israeli war on lebanon was in july 2006.

Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah: Next Victory Unequivocally Decisive السيد حسن نصر الله: النصر سيكون حاسماً وواضحاً
24/08/2008 Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah vowed decisive victory against Israel if it launches any attack against Lebanon. Addressing the Imam Mahdi (pbuh) scouts in Beirut's southern suburb, Sayyed Nasrallah said that the Islamic Resistance leadership sees that "this sum of threats and noise against Lebanon is attributed to internal reasons inside Israel." "We do not underestimate or undervalue these threats, but we deal with them with confidence and resolution."
His eminence also pledged that any new war Israel will impose on Lebanon "will be swift and victory shall be fast, crystal clear and unequivocally decisive. The army of our enemy will witness an unprecedented method of fighting by courageous, tough and devoted resistance fighters in the battlefield; something they had never seen since the establishment of their usurping entity."
"I would like to confirm that those recent threats made by (Israeli PM Ehud) Olmert and some of his ministers also come within the same framework of intimidation and psychological war against Lebanon, otherwise, there is no rationale for all of this. The Israelis speak about the policy statement of the Lebanese government and say that the government has adopted the resistance and has given Hezbollah an umbrella, therefore it has to pay the price. This is ridiculous, because the policy statement of the former government was a text stronger in supporting the resistance than the present one, yet Zionist leaders did not say that it covered the resistance and adopted it. Today the Israelis need to speak this language of intimidation and blackmail.
On the other hand, they also need it because they have Kadima elections coming up and it goes without saying that (Foreign Minister Tsibi) Livni and (Minister of Transportation and a Deputy Prime Minister Shaul) Mofaz will be at loggerheads to lead the party. The Israelis might hold early legislative elections as well, so the Labor party, Kadima and Likud will engage in competition. Moreover, there is a current crisis of leadership inside the Zionist entity and therefore, everyone is trying to project himself as the leader, the expert and the savior. They have entered the phase of outbidding, and threatening Lebanon is no exception. Of course Olmert has his own special circumstances; the Israeli media is no longer commenting on him. The Israeli media lashed out at Olmert saying 'when you were stronger than today, you unleashed threats and promises and proved to be a failure.' Well, Olmert the loser who is packing for leaving is talking to us this way, nevertheless we have to understand his personal and psychological circumstances. However, we should not underestimate or undervalue these threats; we should not be pressured by them as well and cause a state of fear...I can tell you from the position of someone who is very cognizant with the resistance, its development and its capabilities after the 2006 war, the Israelis will think tens of thousands of times before they decide to wage a war against Lebanon. Look at (Defense Minister Ehud) Barak's approach when he speaks about balance between Lebanon and Israel or between the resistance and Israel and when he assails and threatens Syria and Iran. He says that if you provide modern anti-aircraft weapons (to Hezbollah) you will be disturbing the balance and Israel will not allow this to happen. Barak is acknowledging the current balance and he's afraid of breaking it. We do not need to face a threat with another threat. We believe in action not in words. We made pledges and we fulfilled them before and today we make pledges and we will fulfill them: Any attack or any war against Lebanon will have very different results and repercussions that begin from the results and repercussions of the July 2006 war. The new Israeli threat is not the Israeli air force; it's what Barak is saying about a ground operation that he will carry out to invade Lebanon in a matter of days. He is speaking about five divisions under construction for that purpose. He is saying that these forces are going to change the equation and that they will be engaged in a house-to-house battle. I tell Barak, and this is my new pledge, your five divisions will be crushed on our mountains, valleys, houses and villages and with them, your usurping entity will be destroyed. Mofaz, Barak, (Chief of Staff Gabi) Ashkenazi and others are speaking about a swift and successful war, but I tell them that, even though we hate to see this war happening, our next victory will be definite, unequivocally decisive and crystal clear. This army will see in the battlefields, in the eyes of the resistance fighters and in their fists, things they have never seen since the establishment of the Zionist entity, God willing."

Urban Abstract was created by Jopsu Ramu and Timo Ramu (ex. Huhtala) - creative team and founders of Musuta Ltd. Jopsu Ramu is a young female designer and Creative Director of Musuta Ltd. Timo Ramu is her creative partner and manager of Musuta Ltd.
This digital art piece was commissioned by TV Nelonen / channel 4 Finland and it was shown as the November break bumpers on one of the biggest commercial TV channels in Finland: TV Nelonen.
Urban Abstract has been highly awarded, it has won bronze / in book award in D&Ad; awards in London, Bronze in European Design awards in Rotterdam and most recently it won a Gold Lion from design category in Cannes Lions.
Urban Abstract -piece was born in Tokyo during 2009. It consists of 40 X five second clips or it can be viewed as a one 200 second journey.
The website http://www.urban-abstract.com works as a part of the piece and creates an extra dimension for the clips shown on TV.
URBAN ABSTRACT - About the concept:
Urban Abstract is a journey across urban space that unfolds in forty, 5 second parts. The journey, in one, two and three dimensions, is a bit like abstract surfing in which the original destination is only reached after a number of seemingly random yet linked detours occur. Points , lines, planes and other abstract elements create a journey through an Urban Abstract.
The space between things is as important as intended space, perhaps creating a fourth dimension. Meaningful shapes and purposes occur in this dimension's reality as well. The concept of negative space has meaning here.
Nature plays a part as well. To be able to understand and differentiate what is urban one has understand what is nature.
The style of the shorts is fluid and, though seemingly random, stream into a cohesive whole. Perhaps watching them in a different order would be more like seeing the same journey from another point of view. The sound world is also very important -- movement in space is sensed even if watching the shorts with eyes closed. Sounds overlap, fade, come and go.
Architectural, abstract, someway minimalist and abstract with a touch of humanity.
This feeling is reached through mixing techniques such as vectors , hand drawn lines and painting.
Urban Abstract was realized in Tokyo by a team of artists, designers and animators from Finland and Japan. Urban Abstract was created by Jopsu Ramu from Musuta Ltd, a concept, art & design -studio based in Tokyo and Helsinki.

I AM
Tronic directed and animated this spot on the loss of nature in our increasingly man-made landscape. I AM shows a bleak future, where animals, now a recent memory, are constructed from detritus. This is their plea to us.
------------------------
I AM Interview 11/2/09
Vivian Rosenthal www.tronicstudio.com
Sebastien Agneessens www.formavision.info
SEBASTIEN:
This is Sebastien Agneessens from Formavision recording Vivian Rosenthal on November 2, regarding the piece I AM.
I find the title I AM quite interesting, because it contrasts both with the future and the past that you use in your spoken poetry. Why did you choose I AM as the title for your piece?
VIVIAN:
The title comes from the animals’ declaration of who they are. Each animal says, “I AM the elephant” and “I AM the horse” and it’s through language that they are reinforcing their physicality and their place in the world. And the irony, of course, is that animals don’t have access to our language, they have their own languages, but we privilege ours. And so with this piece, the idea was that by giving them access to language, it was giving them agency, giving them power, giving them the ability to be heard. And so the title I AM I chose really as a way to underscore the importance of our understanding of the self. And by expressing the self, I think people can understand how to relate not just to animals, but to the planet at large, and to see it as a reflection of themselves and therefore hopefully care more about its future and our future collectively.
S:
In I AM, you juxtapose an empty New York City landscape, which could be any other desolate urban landscape, with some kind of archeological relic. This relic, even though it is being built in front of your eyes, seems like a ruin, a relic of some vanishing civilization. Why did you choose to depict the animals in such a fragile and man-made state?
V:
I love that question, because I think it’s so insightful in terms of the thinking that went into the piece. Essentially the reason the animals have this archaic feeling is because that’s how they are quickly becoming, they are becoming relics. So instead of giving them a more sleek form or language, we chose to have them made out of detritus, just out of found wood. And the reason for that was that it feels that they are becoming these vestiges of trash essentially, because that’s how we are treating them. By treating the planet and our environment that way, we are essentially doing the same to these creatures. They are becoming almost like walking ghosts that are just drifting through a manufactured landscape.
S:
I notice that the only free animal is the one that disappears, meaning that it’s the one that decides to flee the human world, or the manufactured landscape as you call it. Do you consider your piece to be mainly about the relationship between nature and culture? Or mankind? Or did you approach this piece to speak about the place of animals in the planet?
V:
Well, hopefully it can have a personal interpretation for each viewer. Since I can’t speak for everyone, and only myself, I think for me, yes, it’s very much about the erasure of history as we move forward. And I think as animals and human cultures become extinct, they are only going to live on through our memory, and obviously through images and film. But really, I think we almost need to be forced to see them in a new light, made up of wood, to recognize their fragile state. That’s a big part of why they keep breaking and collapsing, it’s almost like these are their last words, their last breath, before they are destroyed, before they are made extinct.
S:
Why the choice of these four particular animals - the elephant, the horse, the bear and the bird?
V:
It’s not really about the specificity of these particular animals, it could have been any type of animal, it’s more about capturing a moment in time. The elephant, the horse, the bear- those three were chosen for their size and their feeling of power. The bird, and I think you touched on this in one of your other questions, the bird was really speaking to the idea of hope. So the other three kind of have the sense of defeat and nostalgia, and a sense of having given up and lost. Whereas the bird, because it can fly, symbolically to me still held hope, the hope that somehow it could escape to a better landscape or a better point in history. Whether or not it can is a whole other question, but this was really talking about the symbolic nature of the bird.
S:
Do you think the only hope for survival of the bird to actually escape human civilization?
V:
Yeah, I guess sadly it is, at least metaphorically. I’d like to think that maybe they’ll be a shift, and instead of damaging the environment and the planet, we’ll start to help it. But I think we are a long way off. There is a lot of damage that we would have to undo before we could get back to a

Dub FX 'Flow' feat. Mr. Woodnote
A live music documentation film.
Dir: bd
Artist: Dub FX feat. Mr. Woodnote
Date: April 2009
Location: Bristol, UK
This film for me really justifies my whole approach to filming performers in one take. For me the film works not because of the way I filmed it but because I was lucky enough to catch something special and real.
Dub FX had been living in Bristol during the winter of 08/09 in order to record his album 'Everythinks A Ripple'. In Bristol he had met fellow Australian Mikey 'Woodnote', a very capable and experienced sax player who was then working on his album 'Winter of Woodshed'. Both artists use a loopstation to build and create tracks.
As far as I know this was the first time the two of them ever played this song together in public. It was exciting for me to film as the 9 minutes went by as I could sense that something was coming together. You cannot plan for a 9 minute shot of a live performance to work. The idea is that if you do catch something then you are lucky, but what you catch will be so much more engaging than a set up.
This film was originally released on Youtube in April 2009 and as of November 2010 had amassed 5.8 million views (receiving 16 thousand views daily).
This version for Vimeo has be upconverted to HD. The original film was made on a Panasonic DVX100 camera with a Redrock M2 DOF adaptor and a Nikon 35mm f2.0 lens.

Empowering Children As Peacebuilders [ECaP] Forum 2009 - Part II
Child & youth leaders from Colombia, India, Cambodia, Indonesia, Philippines, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Lebanon and Kenya gathered together in the Empowering Children as Peacebuilders (ECaP) Forum in Manila, Philippines on November 3-7, 2009. Their main agenda: to learn from each other's culture, history, religion and ethnicity and share their vision of a peaceful and just world. And the result was a Declaration of Peace calling the government, politicians and religious leaders to work for peace and recognize that children and youth are the Young Peacebuilders Shaping the Future. The Children and Youth Peacebuilders Network was created and launched during the forum to equip and enable them to pursue their hopes and visions for a just and peaceful world.
This project is funded by World Vision Canada and World Vision Korea.
