Mangifera indica is a species of mango in the Anacardiaceae family. It is found in the wild in India and cultivated varieties have been introduced to other warm regions of the world. It is the largest fruit-tree in the world, capable of a height of one-hundred feet and an average circumference of twelve to fourteen feet, sometimes reaching twenty Mangiferin (a pharmacologically active flavonoid, a natural xanthone C-glycoside) is extracted from Mango at high concentrations from the young leaves (172 g/kg), bark (107 g/kg), and from old leaves (94 g/kg).[5] Mangiferin shows an exceptionally strong antioxidant[6] capacity. It has a number of pharmacological actions and possible health benefits.

As seen on Raw Food Rehab's Foodie Friday Inspired by some information in one of the women's magazines my mom-in-law brought with her on her last visit, this recipe is now a total staple. You know those funny magazines you see in the racks at the checkout counters, the ones that promise miracle weight loss cures and 50 ways to serve vanilla ice cream. Well, Nina and I always laugh at the absurdity of it all but she loves that there are these little tidbits of information that if true can be enlightening and useful. So, on one page in the last magazine we looked at together, we learned that there is an extract in limes that lowers levels of heart-harming cholesterol and triglycerides. Another blurb talked about the capscaicin in chiles making the body-fat stores essentially self destruct, also it is known to boost calorie burn, increase satiety and stabilize blood sugar. Tucked in between two other factoids was a lil' bit about Mangoes and how they are a top source for mangiferin which helps increase insulin sensitivity and regulate blood sugar according to a study. They say this is a key to melting pounds and boosting energy. The funny part is how the magazine tells you to ingest these super foods using white sugar and mayo for example. Well, I love all those flavors together all by themselves and that is how I started to use them. I would chop up a mango and a chili toss it in a sald and squeeze on some lime juice.
