How will we care for our elderly?
"Ethics, Aging, and the Coming Healthcare Challenge" was the title of the conference organized last Thursday by the Acton Institute for the Study of Religion and Liberty. The day-long event addressed medical and economic issues in light of the new challenges presented by aging demographics and ever-extending life-spans. Aging in itself is not the main problem for society, according to Bishop Jean Laffitte, the Secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Family. The problem, he said, is that "people are not ready anymore to welcome life." Laffitte encouraged young people to have the courage to get married and have children. Bishop Jean Laffitte, Secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Family: "Fear not, marriage is a path that is beautiful, it is a path that makes you happy, and it is a path that does not limit you in your life; on the contrary, it is a path which will open you to the rest of the world, and the world needs you, the world needs your love, your true love. Do not be afraid to love and create a family." The conference, co-sponsored by the Pontifical Council for the Family among others, brought together academics, practitioners, clergy, and policy-makers from around the world. It covered many different aspects of the changing demographics affecting health care, ranging from declining fertility rates to pharmaceutical research to pensions to hospice care. One of the main objectives of the conference was to help participants understand how both ethics and economics can work together to help us confront the challenge of aging populations. That is why, according to Michael W. Hodin, Executive Director of the Global Coalition on Aging, who contributed to the conference, "we need to think differently about our life course". "In order to deal with this demographic transformation- he added - we need to go from a traditional life-work- retirement approach to a new one where you integrate living a fuller life of working, taking a little bit of leisure time, and then going back to work". To put this in practice, Hodin had a suggestion: Michael W. Hodin, Executive Director, Global Coalition on Ageing: "Rather than thinking about how we are going to refill the coffers of Medicare of social security, let's think about how to use public policy to provide the incentive to be able to work and live differently. What about tax credits to corporations that keep people working into their eighties, and tax credits to individuals who want to work longer?"

The Family in the New Economy (Cardinal Alfonso López Trujillo - Acton Institute)
Centesimus Annus Conference Series (Rome - January 21, 2006) - The Family in the New Economy: Insights from Centesimus Annus
Cardinal Lopez Trujillo (1935-2008) was President of the Pontifical Council for the Family, Archbishop emeritus of Medellín. After attending the local archdiocesan major seminary, he continued his studies in Rome and obtained his doctorate in philosophy from the Angelicum. After his priestly ordination, he returned to Bogotá and taught philosophy for four years at the local major seminary. In 1968, he was placed in charge of a special course on Pope Paul VI's encyclical Populorum Progressio that was given in all the principal centers in Colombia. He participated as an expert at the second general conference of Latin American Bishops held in Medellín. Elected general secretary of CELAM in 1972, he was nominated Coadjutor Archbishop of Medellín, becoming Archbishop in 1979. As General Secretary of CELAM, he worked intensely in preparing the third general conference of the Latin American Bishops held in Puebla in 1979, in which Pope John Paul II participated. Elected President of CELAM until 1984, he also served as President of the Colombian Bishops Conference. He was appointed President of the Pontifical Council for the Family on 8 November 1990. Cardinal Alfonso L'opez Trujillo died on 19 April 2008.

The Family Is One Of The Church's Main Pastoral Priorities
One of the key organizers of the 6th World Meeting of Families, Cardinal Ennio Antonelli, said the family is one of the Catholic Church's main pastoral priorities and that its promotion is crucial for the development of society.
Cardinal Ennio Antonelli
President of the Pontifical Council for the Family
The World Meeting of Families in Mexico focuses mainly on education, and the transmission of human and Christian values from parents to their children, from one generation to another, but it's obvious that this education can only work if the family is united.
Antonelli said that although the family as an institution in many Western countries is going through a period of crisis, it still remains strong, conscious and valued. Jose Guillermo Gutierrez, another key coordinator, also hopes this meeting will revitalize the institution of the family in Mexico, especially considering the current climate of violence in the country.
Jose Guillermo Gutierrez
Pontifical Council for the Family
This world meeting brings good news in this sense. Because if the family is healthy, the family will support each other, and then will create better citizens, citizens who do not choose the wrong paths. So this world meeting in Mexico is also a great resource for the prevention of these problems.
Experts from many countries attend the World Meeting of Families to reflect on family values that need to be promoted and on issues ranging from education to immigration.
Jose Guillermo Gutierrez
Pontifical Council for the Family
We would like to reflect on the family that emigrates as a bearer and transmitter of values and on their difficulties when trying to adapt to a new society.
While Benedict XVI will not attend the event, he will be very close to the participants. The Pope is sending Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone to represent him. He will also send a video-recorded message to the participants, and he will take part in the final ceremony through video conference, where he will announce the location and date of the next World Meeting of Families.

All Set For The 6th World Meeting Of Families In Mexico City
The preparations are ready for the 6th World Meeting of Families to be held in Mexico City next January.
Father José Guillermo Gutiérrez
Pontifical Council for the Family
In Mexico were very happy that the Holy Father has had this distinction for our country to allow us to accommodate the families that come from around the world to meet and reflect on their beautiful vocation and mission.
It's a meeting held every 3 years where laity, priests, experts and members of various delegations reflect on a topic related to the evangelization of the family. The theme Benedict XVI chose for this year is "The family, teacher of human and Christian values."
Fr. José Guillermo Gutiérrez
Pontifical Council for the Family
It is an important time to reflect and to motivate families to fully assume the task of educating their members, because not only parents educate their children, children also educate their parents, siblings educate each other, the family is a community that educates its members on Christian values through its daily life and the web of relationships that develops with neighbors, co-workers and school.
The meeting will consist of three parts: a Theological-Pastoral Congress, the testimony of families from different countries and a mass in the Basilica of Guadalupe.
Father Gutierrez said that although Benedict XVI will not attend the meeting, he will be very close to the participants. The Pope will send a videotaped message and will participate via satellite.
Fr. José Guillermo Gutiérrez
Pontifical Council for the Family
The Holy Father will participate via satellite and will send a message to the participants. He will also announce where the next world meeting of the families will be held.
Participants include 53 official delegations from 5 continents. According to Father Gutierrez about 6,000 to 10,000 people will attend the Theological-Pastoral Congress and about 200,000 will be at the final celebration.

Benedict XVI: the family way of the Church
The family founded on the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony is a particular realisation of the Church, it is the path to the Church because married couples transmit the Gospel, said Benedict XVI Thursday in his address to participants at the Plenary Assembly of the Pontifical Council for the Family. The Pope reiterated that there are areas where ecclesial commitment of Christian families is particularly urgent: the education of children, adolescents and young people to love, understood as self-giving and communion; the preparation of engaged couples for marriage as a journey of faith, and the formation of married couples, especially young couples, to charity, education and civic engagement, as well as the ...

Pope: Families are schools of obedience and true freedom
Christian families are schools of obedience and environments of true freedom. This is what Benedict XVI highlighted during the mass celebrated on Thursday morning, April 23rd in the Redemptoris Mater Chapel of the Apostolic Palace, for the committee that organized the Sixth World Meeting of Families, held in Mexico City from January 13th to 18th.As a token of appreciation for the Popes commitment in promoting the central role of the family in society, the committee gave him a large mosaic composed of thousands of thematic pictures of the family. The encounter was organized by the Pontifical Council for the Family, headed by Cardinal Ennio Antonelli.

"To you noble champions of human arts and disciplines the Church acknowledges complete freedom in method and research".
Part I: CONSTITUTION AND AIM, Art. 1 The Pontifical Academy of Sciences, founded by Pius XI of hallowed memory, is placed under the exalted and direct protection of the reigning Supreme Pontiff.
Art. 2 The aim of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences is to promote the progress of the mathematical, physical and natural sciences and the study of epistemological problems related thereto. promotes scientific investigations and researches which can contribute, in the appropriate quarters, to the exploration of moral, social and spiritual problems;
Man participates in the wisdom and goodness of the Creator who gives him mastery over his acts and the ability to govern himself with a view to the true and the good. The natural law expresses the original moral sense which enables man to discern by reason the good and the evil, the truth and the lie: The natural law is written and engraved in the soul of each and every man, because it is human reason ordaining him to do good and forbidding him to sin . But this command of human reason would not have the force of law if it were not the voice and interpreter of a higher reason to which our spirit and our freedom must be submitted. This is a personal project that would not have been possible without the support of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. Thanks to the entire team for their generous access during training exercises and patrols this Summer. Since the Service began in 1973, it has carried out more than 21,000 missions ranging from urgent patient transfers to dangerous search and rescue missions.
This film is 100% 'real', but there are some new techniques for me here, such as using time lapse to create the illusion of forward movement for the helicopter ocean scenes. These flight sequences would not be possible without the skill and patience of Chief Pilot Peter Yates. Thanks also to Trevor Cracknell (for getting wet!) and Family.

Pope: Children have the right to grow up in a united family
To protect children and denounce the abuses committed against them was Benedict XVIs exhortation in his speech to participants in the plenary assembly of the Pontifical Council for the Family on February 8th.The Pope praised the councils projects dedicated to the education of engaged couples. The family founded on marriage between a man and a woman, the Holy Father said, is the greatest help that can be given to children []. A troubled family environment, the division of the parents and, in particular, separation through divorce are not without consequences for children.Supporting the family and promoting its true good, its rights, its unity and stability, the Pope concluded, is the best way ...

What is "Heart of the Matter"?
Everyone on this Earth has a call to change the world in his or her

people who are as ordinary as you and I, but who affected (and
continue to affect) the world in extraordinary ways - all by accepting
their call and role, and by doing everything to fulfill the mission
accorded to them by God. If they can do it, so can we. Watch and

Get Your Home Enthronement Sacred Heart of Jesus & Immaculate Heart of Mary
Enthronement is a solemn act of placing God at the center of peoples lives especially the family. Through a solemn rite, the members of the family accept holiness as a state to which God calls each one of them. In the Alliance of Two Hearts House-to-House Enthronement, Jesus is Lord and is worshipped as the King of the family. Mary, on the other hand, is the Mother of Our Lord, our model for holiness and is honored as the Queen of the home.
The family is brought closer together in love and peace. Holiness then begins in the home. Under the guidance of the late His Eminence Alfonso Cardinal Trujillo (Prefect of the Pontifical Council for the Family) and the former Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI) we bring the devotion and the lifestyle of the Alliance of the Two Hearts, which we call the Communion of Reparation, to a level where the Pontifical Council for the Family and the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith have constantly reminded and urged us to continue and maintain the spiritual depth and growth of the apostolate to truly be of help in bringing back holiness in family life.
Enthronement is a crusade to establish the Social Reign of the Sacred Heart in society through the family, the social cell. It is based on Our Lords statement to St. Margaret Mary: I will reign through My Heart!
The apostolate is a fruit of love and generosity of the team. The team does not ask for anything in return, the service is for free. However, the family may make a humble donation solely for the apostolate to defray cost of the materials used (Two Hearts pictures, prayer book, enthronement certification which are all given to the family).

And this year the organizers say about 7,000 people from five continents are registered to attend here in Mexico City.
Each World Encounter of Families is organized by the Pontifical Council for the Family.
[Cardinal Antonelli, President, Family Council]:
"Bishops, priests, consecrated people, laypeople and above all, those present who are representing families, vital cells of the Church and society. We are many and we are one in virtue of Christ and his Holy Spirit."
Lectures and discussion panels will take place over the next few days to tackle family issues.
And on the agenda is the government's role in family security.
[Felipe Calderon, President of Mexico]:
"It's the responsibility of the state to recognize and strengthen the family which is the basic cell within society. This role of solidarity corresponds to governments, to create conditions of economic, social, public, judicial, cultural and political security, allowing for the development of families and of each one of its members."
Pope John Paul II created these meetings in Rome during the International Year of the Family in 1994.
