Nova Varoš

Nova Varoš (Cyrillic script: Нова Варош, pronounced [nɔ̂v̞aː v̞ǎːrɔʃ]) is a town and municipality in Zlatibor District of Serbia. The municipality of Nova Varoš has a population of 16,638, while the town of Nova Varoš itself has a population of 8,795 inhabitants.

History

Mounds and archaeological remains of the Celts, Illyrians and Romans from the early Stone Age are evidence of prehistoric life on the territory of Nova Varoš. In the 12th and 13th centuries, Nova Varoš was experiencing rapid growth. Nova Varoš was first mentioned the end of the 16th century as Skender Pasha's Palanka, named after its founder, Skender Pasha Đenovljanin, who was from Bosnia.

Geography

Nova Varoš is located in southwest Serbia, the main road that connects the north of the country the Montenegrin coast. It is situated at 1000 meters above sea level, and below the northern slopes of mountain Zlatar. Nova Varoš is located in the Dinaric mountain range. North of town is mountain Murtenica, while the south mountain Zlatar.

Below is a list of selected neighbourhoods and suburbs of Montenegrin capital of Podgorica. Note that there are many different interpretations on boundaries and existence of certain neighbourhoods, as neighbourhood is not an administrative category, but unofficial geographical notion.

Centar

Historically known as Nova Varoš (new town), this neighbourhood roughly corresponds to the traditional city centre of Podgorica. It is bounded by Ivana Crnojevića Boulevard to the north, Svetog Petra Cetinjskog Boulevard to the south, Stanka Dragojevića Boulevard to the west, and Ribnica River to the east.

It is the administrative, as well as socio-cultural heart of the city. Parliament of Montenegro, Central Bank of Montenegro, Montenegrin National Theatre and Podgorica City Assembly are located within this part of town. It is also home to most of Podgorica's cafés, nightclubs and retail establishments. Hercegovačka Street and Slobode Street, the city's main promenades, are completely within the city centre. The Square of the Republic, traditionally considered the heart of Podgorica, is positioned at the centre of this neighbourhood.
