BOOK REVIEW FORENSIC PSYCHIATRY By Nigel Eastman, Gwen Adshead, Simone Fox, Richard Latham, Sean Whyte Oxford University Press ISBN: 978 0 19 956282 4 www.oup.com THE IDEAL HANDBOOK ON FORENSIC PSYCHIATRY FOR LEGAL AND MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers Distinguished by its thoroughness and clarity, this superb handbook guides practitioners through the sometimes miasmic overlap between psychiatry and law. It's particularly and obviously relevant to legal practitioners who either prosecute or represent mentally disordered patients, or those who may be suspected of having a mental disorder. Forensic psychiatry, as the term indicates, is cross-disciplinary. It's defined by the learned authors as comprising 'the psychiatry of mental disorder and offending behaviours, plus law in relation to all psychiatry'. Both of these aspects are represented in this handbook. 'It is not possible either effectively or ethically,' say the authors, 'to guide an offender patient through the justice system... or properly to assist the justice system in dealing with mentally disordered offenders, without a real understanding of legal process and of the interface between law and psychiatry'. The stated aim of the authors is to summarise and describe areas of law which are relevant to this interface, thus rendering the handbook of immense value, not just to lawyers, but for clinicians whose work is regulated by the law. Clifton House - North Yorkshire Forensic Psychiatry Service - York
This film has been developed with service users as the result of a service review conducted in 2007 where carers wanted more information and detail about the service into which their family members were being admitted and treated. Funding was provided for this initiative through the York and Selby Clinical Governance Fund. A company produced the film to the specification of carers, staff, and service users. It shows the range of facilities and opportunities that are on offer to service users and illustrates the pathway of recovery from a secure ward to independent community living. As well as being accessible via this site, other psychiatric services can request a copy of the DVD to show service users who may access the North Yorkshire Forensic Psychiatry Service, or their carers and family members.

What is Forensic Psychiatry?
Professor Jeremy Coid MB ChB, MD (Lond), FRCPsych. MPhil. Dip. Criminol. Chair of Forensic Psychiatry, Director of Forensic Psychiatry Research Unit, Queen Mary College University of London Jeremy Coid, Professor of Forensic Psychiatry debates with Dr Raj Persaud, Consultant Psychiatrist, in these clips of video, how psychiatrists can come to a conclusion about the mental state of mass killers like Anders Breivik. The interview with Professor Coid is in advance of a free public debate to be held under the auspices of the long-running and prestigious Maudsley Debates. A free public debate, part of the long-running series 'The Maudsley Debates', is to be held at Guys Hospital Thursday 19th July 2012, where eminent psychiatrists, psychologists, experts and academics will debate Breivik's mental state; what this case reveals about the link between fanaticism and psychological disturbance. The Court in Norway, having heard all the evidence, is about to pronounce a sentence. Much turns on whether the judges are going to agree with the first two psychiatrists who examined Breivik and diagnosed him as suffering from 'paranoid schizophrenia with persistent delusions', or the second pair of clinicians who concluded, in marked contrast to the first diagnosis, that Breivik is a case of personality disorder, characterised by extreme political attitudes, and not delusions. The title of the debate: 'Cases such as Anders Breivik demonstrate that fanaticism is a form of madness' is ...

IAU seminar on Forensic Psychiatry:
Informative, educational and interesting. These words aptly describe a seminar on Forensic Psychiatry and the role of Mental Health in the Criminal Justice system which was organised by the International American University College Medicine (IAUCOM) in association with the University of Kentucky (department of Psychiatry), last Friday at the college campus in Vieux-Fort. The seminar was addressed by Dr. Timothy Allen, director of Forensic Psychiatry, St. Claire Counseling and the University of Kentucky. Dr. Allen is also a part-time associate professor at the UK Department of Psychiatry and a member of several committees, and is involved in various scholarly researches. Faculty members of IAU in attendance included, Dean of Basic Sciences, Dr. Naser; Director of Clinical Affairs, Dr. Manish Nair; and President , Mr.KG Manmadhan Nair. Also in attendance were students of IAU and members of the general public. In addressing the large and appreciative gathering which showed profound interest in the event, Dr. Allen, an extremely revered scholar in his area of study, drew reference to persons charged with murder in countries such as America and England and being freed, which subsequently led to some laws in these countries being changed. He stressed the importance of medical opinions in cases of murder and what doctors need to look for in an accused when giving their expert opinion. And from the feedback from the gathering it was quite obvious that they had their knowledge on ...
