Mayor Rob Ford didn’t have much to say Tuesday about the fatal shooting of Sammy Yatim.
Yatim was shot by Toronto Police during a confrontation on an empty Dundas streetcar early Saturday morning. Video of the incident shows one officer fired nine shots at the 18-year-old.
Speaking about the shooting for the first time on Tuesday, Ford stressed he couldn’t “get into it too much” because it is under investigation by the province’s Special Investigations Unit.
“My condolences, my sympathies and my prayers go out to the family, very sorry what happened to the young man,” Ford said during a press conference in Scarborough with Scarborough-Guildwood PC candidate Ken Kirupa.
“I can’t comment. The SIU is investigating it. That’s all I can say.”
Ford didn’t answer a question from a reporter asking what he thought about the video.
“Guys, hold on we’re going to talk about the election here,” Councillor Doug Ford interjected.
Mayor Ford agreed he was there to talk Thursday’s vote.
“I can’t address what happened a couple nights ago,” Ford said. “It’s unfortunate, it’s sad and my heart goes out to the family but none of us know all the facts. I know as much as you do right now and that’s all I can say.”
In a later interview, the mayor said he had seen a “couple videos” of the incident.
“The police will investigate it and I’m sure everything will come out in the wash,” Ford said. “Right now, we’ve got to support the family.
“My best wishes and my prayers go out to the family.”
