David Cameron defeated over Europe in House of Commons vote
David Cameron suffered a stinging Commons defeat over Europe as Conservative backbenchers told him he must deliver real reductions in the European Union budget.
The defeat came after more than 50 Conservative rebels were joined by Labour MPs in supporting a demand for real-terms reductions in spending by Brussels.
The Government was defeated by 307 votes to 294, a majority of 13. Commons sources estimated that 51 Tories voted against the Government, with two more acting as tellers.
The vote was Mr Cameron's second major Commons defeat over Europe and led to warnings that division in the Conservative Party over Europe could hamstring him as it did Sir John Major during the 1990s.

In its final decade, from 1909 to 1920, movement leaders wrestled with contentious questions about the most effective methods for affecting social change. They debated the use of militant, even violent tactics, as well as hunger strikes and...

On 5 December 2018, during a time where the government of the day did not hold a majority on the floor of the House, two interesting divisions occurred.
The first division happened after the Manager of Opposition Business, Tony Burke (Member for Watson), moved that the question be now put during debate on an amendment of a motion relating to the scheduling of the House's consideration of the Senate's message:
"The Senate transmits to the House of Representatives the following resolution which was agreed to by the Senate this day:
"That the Senate calls on the Federal Government to legislate to phase out long-haul live sheep exports.
"The Senate requests the concurrence of the House of Representatives in this resolution."
With the Ayes and Noes being equal, Speaker of the House, Tony Smith (Member for Casey) used his casting vote in accordance with the rules set out by Speaker Denison.
The next division happened after Adam Bandt (Member for Melbourne), moved a suspension of standing orders in relation to the business of the day.
While the Ayes had a majority of one, a suspension of standing orders motion without notice can only be passed by an absolute majority of the House, that being 76 seats, in accordance with standing order 47.

At first closely intertwined, the abolition and suffrage movements were called to make a compromise that became a lasting wedge.
Learn more about THE VOTE, including where to watch the documentary: https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/films/vote/
One hundred years after the passage of the 19th Amendment, The Vote tells the dramatic culmination story of the hard-fought campaign waged by American women for the right to vote — a transformative cultural and political movement that resulted in the largest expansion of voting rights in U.S. history.
In its final decade, from 1909 to 1920, movement leaders wrestled with contentious questions about the most effective methods for affecting social change. They debated the use of militant, even violent tactics, as well as hunger strikes and relentless public protests. The battle for the vote also upended previously accepted ideas about the proper role of women in American society and challenged the definitions of citizenship and democracy.
Exploring how and why millions of 20th-century Americans mobilized for — and against — women’s suffrage, The Vote brings to life the unsung leaders of the movement and the deep controversies over gender roles and race that divided Americans then — and continue to dominate political discourse today.
