Overseas aid: an Australian view
In the city, in the country, at cafes and on their lunchbreaks, we asked Australians what they think about overseas aid: do we spend enough on aid, and has it helped save lives? The Australian Government and the Coalition have promised to allocate 50 cents in every $100 of Gross National Income (GNI) to overseas aid by 2015. Right now, Australia gives just 35 cents out of every $100 of GNI. This means out of the world's 23 richest donor nations, Australia is ranked 13th when it comes to government aid generosity. France, Germany, Ireland and the UK are among the countries that give more than we do.

Business Circle - Biomassive Opportunities
Palm oil is the largest agricultural contributor to Malaysia's Gross National Income (GNI), contributing 8% (RM 50 billion) annually. The palm oil industry is also the largest producer of biomass, with every part of the tree useful in the creation of products ranging from plywood to biofuels. Currently the majority of biomass is left in the fields as fertilizer, so this presents an opportunity for higher-value added applications. Global Green Synergy (GGS) is a Malaysian company of 40 people that collaborates with privately owned palm mills in Perak, Pahang and Sabah to produce biomass for consumers in Europe, China and Japan. We learn how they operate and about their joint ventures with foreign companies from Managing Director, Joseph Lim. We also continue to hear from Bas Melssen, Executive Vice-President and Head of Strategic Innovation Projects, Agensi Inovasi Malaysia (AIM) about how private companies can work together with palm mill owners, the opportunity of joint ventures and the future of the Palm Oil Biomass Industry.

Measuring GDP using the Income Approach and the Expenditure Approach
This video lecture outlines the two methods of measuring a nation's Gross Domestic Product. By summing the total wages, rents, interest and profits earned by households, or by adding all the consumption, investment, government spending and net exports, we can determine the total value of a nation's output during a particular period of time.

Life of a Chinese Mystery Gangster stolen phone pics
A Chinese man posing with Porsches, stacks of cash, and a puppy becomes an overnight sensation. Darker images. A lengthy series of pictures was released uploaded to the anonymous photo sharing site Imgur, which purport to show a young Chinese gangster at work and play. There's an ongoing debate as to whether these pictures are real or staged. It's possible the money could have been digitally inserted into the pictures and the violent scenes could be staged. But the pictures of the man standing next to and inside a pair of Porsches appear to be real. And then there's the question of who exactly uploaded the picture to the anonymous photo-sharing site. Were they uploaded by the alleged Chinese gangster himself, or by someone who got a hold of his phone and decided to share the images with the world? The most widely distributed of these images show the man next to a large stack of 100-Yuan bills. According to ABC News, the man is sitting next to an estimated $170000 worth of Yuan, which is about 20 times the entire annual income of the average Chinese citizen. There's even one picture of the man playfully holding a cute puppy. But as your scroll through the photos, they take a dark turn, including several violent images that appear to show a man being beaten, gagged and possibly even having his fingernail or entire finger removed. Business Insider reports that the estimated value of China's black market is $261 billion. That's larger than the entire gross national income of ...

Bill Moyers Essay: Plutocracy and Democracy Don't Mix
An excerpt from "Bill Moyers Journal"
(premiered April 30, 2010)
BILL MOYERS: You've no doubt figured out my bias by now. I've hardly kept it a secret. In this regard, I take my cue from the late Edward R. Murrow, the Moses of broadcast news.
Ed Murrow told his generation of journalists bias is okay as long as you don't try to hide it. So here, one more time, is mine: plutocracy and democracy don't mix. Plutocracy, the rule of the rich, political power controlled by the wealthy.
Plutocracy is not an American word but it's become an American phenomenon. Back in the fall of 2005, the Wall Street giant Citigroup even coined a variation on it, plutonomy, an economic system where the privileged few make sure the rich get richer with government on their side. By the next spring, Citigroup decided the time had come to publicly "bang the drum on plutonomy."
And bang they did, with an "equity strategy" for their investors, entitled, "Revisiting Plutonomy: The Rich Getting Richer." Here are some excerpts:
"Asset booms, a rising profit share and favorable treatment by market-friendly governments have allowed the rich to prosper...[and] take an increasing share of income and wealth over the last 20 years..."
"...the top 10%, particularly the top 1% of the US-- the plutonomists in our parlance-- have benefited disproportionately from the recent productivity surge in the US...[and] from globalization and the productivity boom, at the relative expense of labor."
"...[and they] are likely to get even wealthier in the coming years. [Because] the dynamics of plutonomy are still intact."
And so they were, before the great collapse of 2008. And so they are, today, after the fall. While millions of people have lost their jobs, their homes, and their savings, the plutonomists are doing just fine. In some cases, even better, thanks to our bailout of the big banks which meant record profits and record bonuses for Wall Street.
Now why is this? Because over the past 30 years the plutocrats, or plutonomists — choose your poison — have used their vastly increased wealth to capture the flag and assure the government does their bidding. Remember that Citigroup reference to "market-friendly governments" on their side? It hasn't mattered which party has been in power — government has done Wall Street's bidding.
Don't blame the lobbyists, by the way; they are simply the mules of politics, delivering the drug of choice to a political class addicted to cash — what polite circles call "campaign contributions" and Tony Soprano would call "protection."
This marriage of money and politics has produced an America of gross inequality at the top and low social mobility at the bottom, with little but anxiety and dread in between, as middle class Americans feel the ground falling out from under their feet. According to a study from the Pew Research Center last month, nine out of ten Americans give our national economy a negative rating. Eight out of ten report difficulty finding jobs in their communities, and seven out of ten say they experienced job-related or financial problems over the past year.
So it is that like those populists of that earlier era, millions of Americans have awakened to a sobering reality: they live in a plutocracy, where they are disposable. Then, the remedy was a popular insurgency that ignited the spark of democracy.
Now we have come to another parting of the ways, and once again the fate and character of our country are up for grabs.
So along with Jim Hightower and Iowa's concerned citizens, and many of you, I am biased: democracy only works when we claim it as our own.

Larry's Testimony in Support of HB 2372
Testimony of Larry Halloran in support of HB 2372;
Chairman Kinzer and Members of the House Judiciary Committee,
We ask for your support of HB 2372; An Act concerning immigration; requiring verification of employment eligibility and making other amendments concerning immigration.
The fundamental question today is not illegal immigration itself. If we are a nation of laws and are faithful to our obligations as citizens or legislators then we will rightfully conclude that the rule of law is the bedrock foundation of our society and passage of this legislation should require little debate.
I would not dispute that employer and citizen alike have found the blind eye beneficial to their pocket book but financial gain, open borders or humanitarian compassion are not acceptable substitutes for the rule of law. Yesterdays benefit (however perceived) is today's liability as our citizens find themselves struggling to meet the increased burden of illegal immigration on our society that cannot be measured in financial terms alone.
The blessings and benefits of America are bountiful. But, if they are to be preserved for our posterity and those seeking the benefit of citizenship they must be secured by principled adherence to our state and federal Constitutions.
Illegal immigration is a festering cancer that damages both our society and those unlawfully seeking employment. It creates the necessity for a second society operating under the radar that inhibits the necessary assimilation of new immigrants into the America family. We are no longer concerned with a few thousand illegal immigrants that could be easily absorbed but rather tens of millions that now tax the limits of our social networks. It is past time for the half measured approaches, nod and wink policies and felonious excuses of citizen, employer and legislator alike related to the employment eligibility of illegal immigrants are put to rest. It is time that a lawful approach to employment eligibility verification becomes the rule for all employers and the accepted social norm for all citizens. Of even greater importance is that you, the citizen legislator, honor your oath of office and uphold the rule of law.
Our Founders studied the laws and customs of many nations (both failed and existing) and took from them guidance for our Constitution that best protected a free people and society. For over 200 years, our Constitution has served as the legal binder for our citizens and those wishing to assimilate into a free society. Today, many seek to dilute the authority of our Constitution through substitution of unlawful privileges that in essence establish an equal but separate society within our borders. A society that stands in stark contrast and in opposition to the fundamental necessity of assimilation at the expense of individual liberties guaranteed to all by our Constitution. Such practices serve to disadvantage the citizens and legal immigrants that play by the rules and adhere to our laws by granting unearned favor to the illegal immigrant.
Surely, we are all aware of the inequities, consequences and unquestionable failures of equal but separate jurisprudence practiced at times within our own society. To turn a blind eye or foster such practices is treasonous to our founding principles, documents and the faith of those who gave all to defend and preserve the greatest grant of freedom ever known to man; America.
The challenges before us in preserving the free society and America are indeed great but do include a provision for national suicide. Tolerance does not beget equal but separate in a free society but instead requires assimilation through shared core values and equal application of the laws
Thank you for your favorable support of HB 2372, your service and the defense of freedom for all.
Respectfully,

11.22.2009 Grace Summit Sermon - Following Jesus - Matthew
Lord, we thank You that You have called each of us to follow You and for that we are grateful. You loved us so much to give Your life for us and then You called us into relationship with You to know and understand Your love. You love can only be understood through Your love – in everything You are looking and pursuing us with Your love. We make ourselves available to You to understand what we mean to You.
We are looking at Luke 5 – the calling of Matthew
Luke 5: 27 And after that He went out, and noticed a tax-gatherer named Levi, sitting in the tax office, and He said to him, "Follow Me." 28 And he left everything behind, and rose and [began] to follow Him. 29 And Levi gave a big reception for Him in his house; and there was a great crowd of tax-gatherers and other [people] who were reclining [at the table] with them. 30 And the Pharisees and their scribes [began] grumbling at His disciples, saying, "Why do you eat and drink with the tax-gatherers and sinners?" 31 And Jesus answered and said to them, "[It is] not those who are well who need a physician, but those who are sick. 32 "I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance."
As we look at this story – we might say – I don’t know if you have ever gone out to dinner and see someone you don’t expect and they look at you say the phrase –“Oh, they’ll let anyone in here!” I never say that – people only say it about me – well – that is how it was here.
Matthew was a tax collector. When you think of someone working for the IRS – that is scary enough. But in this time – the collectors would bid on the contract. The trick – the person who won the bid had to pay the entire amount up front. These were wealthy men. Then they would go out and spend the rest of the year collecting the money for the taxes. It was not income taxes, but for goods and services. As people would enter the market, they would stop people – and they had a specific percentage they were allowed to take. They would look at the goods and determine the value.
Maybe it was only worth $10 – but they would say it was worth $30 and tax that.
Another way they would make money would be usury – the unlawful collection of a high rate of interest – like a loan shark. These were oftentimes people of the nationality of the people they would take taxes from. Matthew was a Jew and was defrauding his own people and were despised as much as anyone. Jesus went to this tax collector and said – “Follow Me!” – and Matthew reports that he got up and left everything and followed him. This is similar to the others – but the others were fishermen – the fishermen could go back. When Matthew left his tax collection to follow Jesus, he couldn’t go back.
I had a friend whose brother was an air traffic controller back in the 80s. They went on strike, – and Ronald Reagan fired them all. They believed that they couldn’t get by without them – but he was without an air traffic control job for about a decade as a result. Matthew was a very wealthy man who gave it all to follow Jesus fully.
We are all called to follow fully, but there are some who are called to follow radically. In the early days, my wife and I lived radically. I had no other possessions than a small box. When Cindy and I were first married – the church we belonged to didn’t believe in paying pastors. The only way we got money was by people giving money of their own volition – to put money in an envelope and secretly getting it to you. There was no collection at church. It was an interesting way to live. It was adventurous at times – but it is not about thrill-seeking.
Craig Gross – is in ministry and is called the Porn Pastor. Let me explain – he is called to help people who are trapped and addicted to pornography. That is his ministry. They are also involved in helping people out of the porn industry – they share the gospel and a number of people have left the industry. If you are in that industry – you cannot go back. It is a lucrative industry. Paul Sartarelli’s dad was a doctor – and he was to become a doctor – but when he was called to be a pastor – he was called out of that.
If God has called you into a profession – that is fine – it is no less than being called into ministry – but at times, God makes a radical calling on our lives. When God calls us radically – He wants us to follow Him and to be always available to that calling on our lives. It is not for someone else – we are all called to follow fully. There is no one who is called – but to not follow fully.
Jeremiah 2: 2 "Go and proclaim in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, 'Thus says the Lord, "I remember concerning you the devotion of your youth, The love of your betrothals, Your following after Me in the wilderness, Through a land not sown
God is saying to Israel – when Moses and this new community is founded and God brings

How Do We Reverse the Brain Drain?
Keynote speech by Emeagwali [emeagwali.com] delivered on October 24, 2003, at the Pan-African Conference on Brain Drain, Elsah, Illinois USA. The entire transcript, letters and photos are posted at http://emeagwali.com/speeches/brain-drain/to-brain-gain/reverse-brain-drain-from-africa.html. Permission to reproduce is granted.
Thank you for the pleasant introduction as well as for inviting me to share my thoughts on turning “brain drain” into “brain gain.”
For 10 million African-born emigrants, the word “home” is synonymous with the United States, Britain or other country outside of Africa.
Personally, I have lived continuously in the United States for the past 30 years. My last visit to Africa was 17 years ago.
On the day I left Nigeria, I felt sad because I was leaving my family behind. I believed I would return eight years later, probably marry an Igbo girl, and then spend the rest of my life in Nigeria.
But 25 years ago, I fell in love with an American girl, married her three years later, and became eligible to sponsor a Green Card visa for my 35 closest relatives, including my parents and all my siblings, nieces and nephews.
The story of how I brought 35 people to the United States exemplifies how 10 million skilled people have emigrated out of Africa during the past 30 years.
We came to the United States on student visas and then changed our status to become permanent residents and then naturalized citizens. Our new citizenship status helped us sponsor relatives, and also inspired our friends to immigrate here.
Ten million Africans now constitute an invisible nation that resides outside Africa. Although invisible, it is a nation as populous as Angola, Malawi, Zambia or Zimbabwe. If it were to be a nation with distinct borders, it would have an income roughly equivalent to Africa’s gross domestic product.
Although the African Union does not recognize the African Diaspora as a nation, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) acknowledges its economic importance. The IMF estimates the African Diaspora now constitutes the biggest group of foreign investors in Africa.
Take for example Western Union. It estimates that it is not atypical for an immigrant to wire 00 per month to relatives in Africa. If you assume that most Africans living outside Africa send money each month and you do the math, you will agree with the IMF that the African Diaspora is indeed the largest foreign investor in Africa.
What few realize is that Africans who immigrate to the United States contribute 40 times more wealth to the American than to the African economy. According to the United Nations, an African professional working in the United States contributes about 50,000 per year to the U.S. economy.
Again, if you do the math, you will realize that the African professional remitting 00 per month to Africa is contributing 40 times more to the United States economy than to the African one.
On a relative scale, that means for every 00 per month a professional African sends home, that person contributes 2,000 per month to the U.S. economy.
Of course, the issue more important than facts and figures is eliminating poverty in Africa, not merely reducing it by sending money to relatives. Money alone cannot eliminate poverty in Africa, because even one million dollars is a number with no intrinsic value.
Real wealth cannot be measured by money, yet we often confuse money with wealth. Under the status quo, Africa would still remain poor even if we were to send all the money in the world there.
Ask someone who is ill what “wealth” means, and you will get a very different answer than from most other people.
If you were HIV-positive, you would gladly exchange one million dollars to become HIV-negative.
When you give your money to your doctor, that physician helps you convert your money into health - or rather, wealth.
Money cannot teach your children. Teachers can. Money cannot bring electricity to your home. Engineers can. Money cannot cure sick people. Doctors can.
Because it is only a nation’s human capital that can be converted into real wealth, that human capital is much more valuable than its financial capital.
A few years ago, Zambia had 1,600 medical doctors. Today, Zambia has only 400 medical doctors. Kenya retains only 10% of the nurses and doctors trained there. A similar story is told from South Africa to Ghana.
I also speak from my family experiences. After contributing 25 years to Nigerian society as a nurse, my father retired on a 5-per-month pension.
By comparison, my four sisters each earn 5 per hour as nurses in the United States. If my father had had the opportunity my sisters did, he certainly would have immigrated to the United States as a young nurse.
The “brain drain” explains, in part, why affluent Africans fly to London for their medical treatments.
Furthermore, because a significant percentage of African doctors and

Measuring GDP using the Income Approach and the Expenditure Approach - HD
GDP is generally understood to represent the health of a nation's economy, and most people realize that if GDP is growing, things are going well, while if it's falling things have turned sour in the economy. But what, precisely, does GDP measures? There are two primary methods for measuring GDP, which should yield the same result even though they measure completely different factors. -The income approach: measures the total incomes earned by households in a nation in a year. -The expenditure approach: measures the total amount spent on the goods produced by a country in a year. By examining the circular flow model of a nation's economy, we can demonstrate why every dollar earned by a household in a nation's resource market will ultimately be spent in the product market, or leaked through taxes, savings, and import spending, leading to injections in the form of government spending, investment and export sales. In the video lecture below, the two methods for measuring GDP are introduced, and the various components it includes are explained in detail. www.econclassroom.com If you found this video useful, you may find my study guides and lecture notes especially useful!
