This is the first series dealing with Iranian/Persian history and the first of the Great Persian Empires. Eventually I would like to cover all of the various empires that rose up in the lands and regions of what is now present day Iran.
The lands that would become the Achaemenid Empire or first Persian Empire were ruled by multiple peoples. Some of these people were the Medians, Elamites, Persians and Babylonians.
Cyrus the Great, a Persian, would unite these lands and found the largest empire that the world had yet seen. Many of these people would come to refer to Cyrus as "father" rather than conqueror or tyrant.

We often hear about the Persian empire through Roman writing which ends up being every one sided and portrays the Persians almost as antagonists.
But here was an empire that brought its own innovations and firsts, centuries before the Romans would follow in their empire building.

This is part one of the story of King Cyrus the Great of Persia; one of the most important monarchs in the ancient world. Cyrus was a remarkable leader in his benevolence and wise leadership. He ruled over the greatest empire the world had seen at the time. Yet, the most amazing thing about his life and exploits is that the Almighty God of the Bible foretold his exploits and actually named him around 200 years before he was even born. This is surely one of the greatest proofs that the God of the Bible, who knows the end from the beginning, is the one true God.

Cyrus the Great (600 – 530 BCE) was a towering figure in the history of mankind. As the "father of the Iranian nation", he was the first world leader to be referred to as “The Great”. Cyrus founded the first world empire – and the second Iranian dynastic empire (the Achaemenids) – after defeating the Median dynasty and uniting the Medes with the other major Iranian tribe, the Persians.
Cyrus’ spectacular conquests triggered the age of Empire Building, as carried out by his successors as well as by the later Greeks and Romans.
Cyrus' religion
Almost nothing is known about Cyrus’ personal beliefs, but Xenophon reports to us that in religious matters he followed the guidance of the Magians at his court. Although this is not universally agreed, Mary Boyce has argued that Cyrus was indeed a Zoroastrian and that he thus followed in the footsteps of his ancestors, from when they were Median vassals in Anshan. She has pointed out that the fire altars and the mausoleum at Pasargadae demonstrate Zoroastrian practices, and has cited Greek texts as evidence that Zoroastrian priests held positions of authority at Cyrus’ court.

Cyrus King
Cyrus King (September 6, 1772 – April 25, 1817) was a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts, half brother of Rufus King.
Early life and education
Born in Scarborough, Maine (then a district of Massachusetts), King attended Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts, and was graduated from Columbia College, New York City, in 1794. He studied law.
Career
King served as private secretary to Rufus King when he was United States Minister to England in 1796. He completed law studies in Biddeford, Maine and was admitted to the bar in 1797, commencing his law practice in Saco, Maine. He served as major general of the Sixth Division, Massachusetts Militia. King was one of the founders of Thornton Academy, Saco, Maine.
King was elected as a Federalist to the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Congresses (March 4, 1813 – March 3, 1817).
Death
He returned to Saco, Maine, where he died on April 25, 1817. He was interred in Laurel Hill Cemetery.

This is part one of the story of King Cyrus the Great of Persia; one of the most important monarchs in the ancient world. Cyrus was a remarkable leader in his benevolence and wise leadership. He ruled over the greatest empire the world had seen at the time. Yet, the most amazing thing about his life and exploits is that the Almighty God of the Bible foretold his exploits and actually named him around 200 years before he was even born. This is surely one of the greatest proofs that the God of the Bible, who knows the end from the beginning, is the one true God.

Cyrus the Great (600 – 530 BCE) was a towering figure in the history of mankind. As the "father of the Iranian nation", he was the first world leader to be referred to as “The Great”. Cyrus founded the first world empire – and the second Iranian dynastic empire (the Achaemenids) – after defeating the Median dynasty and uniting the Medes with the other major Iranian tribe, the Persians.
Cyrus’ spectacular conquests triggered the age of Empire Building, as carried out by his successors as well as by the later Greeks and Romans.
Cyrus' religion
Almost nothing is known about Cyrus’ personal beliefs, but Xenophon reports to us that in religious matters he followed the guidance of the Magians at his court. Although this is not universally agreed, Mary Boyce has argued that Cyrus was indeed a Zoroastrian and that he thus followed in the footsteps of his ancestors, from when they were Median vassals in Anshan. She has pointed out that the fire altars and the mausoleum at Pasargadae demonstrate Zoroastrian practices, and has cited Greek texts as evidence that Zoroastrian priests held positions of authority at Cyrus’ court.

This is the first series dealing with Iranian/Persian history and the first of the Great Persian Empires. Eventually I would like to cover all of the various empires that rose up in the lands and regions of what is now present day Iran.
The lands that would become the Achaemenid Empire or first Persian Empire were ruled by multiple peoples. Some of these people were the Medians, Elamites, Persians and Babylonians.
Cyrus the Great, a Persian, would unite these lands and found the largest empire that the world had yet seen. Many of these people would come to refer to Cyrus as "father" rather than conqueror or tyrant.

We often hear about the Persian empire through Roman writing which ends up being every one sided and portrays the Persians almost as antagonists.
But here was an empire that brought its own innovations and firsts, centuries before the Romans would follow in their empire building.

Cyrus King
Cyrus King (September 6, 1772 – April 25, 1817) was a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts, half brother of Rufus King.
Early life and education
Born in Scarborough, Maine (then a district of Massachusetts), King attended Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts, and was graduated from Columbia College, New York City, in 1794. He studied law.
Career
King served as private secretary to Rufus King when he was United States Minister to England in 1796. He completed law studies in Biddeford, Maine and was admitted to the bar in 1797, commencing his law practice in Saco, Maine. He served as major general of the Sixth Division, Massachusetts Militia. King was one of the founders of Thornton Academy, Saco, Maine.
King was elected as a Federalist to the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Congresses (March 4, 1813 – March 3, 1817).
Death
He returned to Saco, Maine, where he died on April 25, 1817. He was interred in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
