Telling Israel’s story through home movies

A new film documents the history of Israel through a series of home movies, presenting an intimate and nostalgic view of the country. Tom Brook reports.

Using an unusual approach, Israel: A Home Movie documents the history of the country through a collection of video clips shot by private individuals between the ‘30s and the ‘70s.

The film was compiled using 8mm home movies and boxes of films from people’s basements and attics, and features voiceovers from the individuals and their relatives.

It depicts many domestic moments which lend the film a nostalgic air and captures historic events like the start of the Yom Kippur War.

Tom Brook speaks with the film’s producer, Arik Bernstein, who explains how the footage was collected and compiled. He also talks about the response to the film in Israel and the Arab world.
