A vocal cord nodule is a mass of tissue that grows on the vocal folds (vocal cords). Typically, this mass will appear on the junction of the anterior and middle two-thirds of the vocal fold, where contact is most forceful.
A vocal cord nodule reduces or obstructs the ability of the vocal folds to create the rapid changes in air pressure which generate human speech. Symptoms include hoarseness of speech, painful speech production, frequent vocal breaks, and reduced vocal range. Vocal fold nodules develop mostly in adult females, and children of both sexes.
The nodules appear as symmetrical swellings on both sides of the vocal cords. The cause of these formations are usually strenuous or abusive voice practices such as yelling and coughing. Those who use their voice constantly in a loud environment are susceptible.
Vocal cord nodules can certainly impair one's speaking and singing ability. They rarely harm one's general health. Indeed, the psychological trauma of being diagnosed with nodules—a trauma affecting those especially whose professional success depends on consistently producing a rich and powerful vocal tone (e.g. singers, actors, litigation lawyers, broadcasters)—typically dwarfs the limited systemic and even otolaryngological effects.

The vocal folds, also known commonly as vocal cords, are composed of twin infoldings of mucous membrane stretched horizontally across the larynx. They vibrate, modulating the flow of air being expelled from the lungs during phonation.
Open during inhalation, closed when holding one's breath, and vibrating for speech or singing (oscillating 440 times per second when singing A above middle C), the folds are controlled via the vagus nerve. They are white because of scant blood circulation.
Birds do not produce vocal sounds by means of vocal folds but by oscillations of membranes in the syrinx.
The larynx is a major (but not the only) source of sound in speech, generating sound through the rhythmic opening and closing of the vocal folds. To oscillate, the vocal folds are brought near enough together such that air pressure builds up beneath the larynx. The folds are pushed apart by this increased subglottal pressure, with the inferior part of each fold leading the superior part. Under the correct conditions, this oscillation pattern will sustain itself. In essence, sound is generated in the larynx by chopping up a steady flow of air into little puffs of sound waves.

It's important to know that most vocal damage comes from the vocal chords rubbing together or being used in an unnatural way, which can create what can be thought of as a callus.
When you're vocal technique is proper, your vocal chords will come together cleanly and create effortless sound. However, when you've been using your voice incorrectly, you can develop nodules or polyps and your sound will not come through clean.

It covers all the common conditions seen in ENT practice and is also up-to-date with common ENT procedures including the latest in ENT such as LASERS. Advanced Undergraduate female recovering from vocal injury. Diagnosed with severe acid reflux in reoccurring episodes lasting 6-8 weeks. Presenting in first lesson with vocal folds so swollen, no real singing possible, advised complete vocal rest. Followed by a series of specialized exercises designed to focus the sound to the smallest possible placement, while only using the core of the sound, and limiting the engagement of the support system to combine "off the breath" singing with some high, small placement staccato exercises. During this lesson, after two weeks of vocal rest and anti-inflammatory remedies, the singer presents with greater freedom in the voice, reduced swelling and increased range.
