Inside 9-2-10
Cameron Poe-Mitchell did his best to take the suspense out of Fayette County head coach Waldon Tucker’s quest for his 300th career win Friday night. Poe-Mitchell score four first-half touchdowns as the Tigers beat Tuscaloosa County’s newest high school Sipsey Valley 28-6 before a near capacity crowd at John Morgan Brown Stadium in Fayette.
Poe-Mitchell scored on runs of 6 and 47 yards and caught TD passes covering 78 and 4 yards as Tucker became just the second coach in Alabama prep football history to win 300 games in the state. Tucker now has 275 wins in the AHSAA and 300 overall counting 25 he won at non-AHSAA member school Demopolis Academy to start his career 38 years ago.
Mitchell’s effort earned him the AHSAA Spotlight performance of the first week’s action. He edged out his own teammate Evan Sims. The Tigers quarterback was a perfect 9-of-9 passing for 168 yards and the two TDs to Mitchell.
NFHS Hall of Famer Glenn Daniel was the first prep coach to win 300. He won 302 in his long career that included five years and Pine Hill and almost four decades at Luverne
The win was bittersweet for Tucker. It came at the expense of his eldest son Lance Tucker, who was making his head-coaching debut for Sipsey Valley’s Bears.
“I didn’t enjoy this. This was the hardest thing I have ever had to do,” said the elder Tucker, 300-123-3 overall. He is 275-107 in the AHSAA and 223-92 at Fayette. His team won the 1996 state 4A title at 15-0 and his 1980 Gordo team was 14-0 to win a state crown. “I didn’t want to have to coach this game against my own son. ”
In other highlights from Week 1:
RICO STALLWORTH, ESCAMB IA COUNTY: The Blue Devils quarterback rushed for 169 yards and three touchdowns – the final one coming in overtime – and also scored the game-winning two-point conversion as Escambia County nipped T.R. Miller 35-34. The victory at Atmore prevented coach Jamie Riggs’ Tigers from becoming the first school in state history to record 600 wins. T.R. Miller came into the game with 599 wins, according to records compiled by the Alabama High School Historical Society. T.R. Miller is now 599-286-20 in 906 games dating back to the school’s first season in 1926. The Tigers are 226-45 since 1990. The win was new Escambia Coach Mark Heaton’s debut win. T.R. Miller will go for No. 600 again this week on Friday night at Bayside Academy.
WILLIE CURRY AND RHETT HARRELSON, ENTERPRISE: Combined for 300 yards rushing as Enterprise opened its new Wildcats Stadium before a packed home crowd with a 49-21 win over Sidney Lanier. It was the 598th victory in Enterprise’s 97-year history – just one behind T.R. Miller. Curry rushed for 186 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries and Harrelson had 113 on six carries with one score. He also passed for 107 yards. Enterprise is now 598-252-34 to ranked second all-time in wins behind the Tigers.
CHASE LINDSEY, RED BAY: Ran for two touchdowns covering 1 and 50 yards as Red Bay downed Sheffield 20-14 to give head coach Dale Jeffreys his 100th career victory.
ERIC TRAVIS, CARVER-BIRMINGHAM: The senior linebacker made a safety with a tackle in the end zone and forced s fumble that teammate Robbie Sturdivant returned 70 yards for a TD to spark Carver’s 20-6 win over B.T. Washington of Tuskegee. The win in the school’s new on-campus football stadium snapped a 27-game losing streak. The last “official” win for the Rams came in week two of 2007 when Hoover was required to forfeit a 59-0 victory over Carver. The last on-the-field win came in week 10 of the 2006 season in a 26-20 triumph over Parker.
Region play begins in all classes this week even though some nine-team regions had region contests in week one. Among the key early region matches is Thursday night’s Enterprise vs. Northview battle in Class 6A , Region 3.to be played at Dothan’s Rip Hewes Stadium. Among Friday’s prominent match-ups are some major rivalry battles including Hewitt-Trussville at Clay-Chalkville, Spain Park at Hoover, Alexandria at Oneonta, Deshler at Brooks, Spanish Fort at Gulf Shores, Prattville at Stanhope Elmore and Mountain Brook at Vestavia Hills.
At Vestavia, the city will be inducting the first class of the Vestavia Hills Sports Hall of Fame. When we come back, we’ll take a look at these 12 honorees.
A banquet at Vestavia Hills Country Club Thursday night and a pre-game on-the-field ceremony Friday night prior to the Mountain Brook-Vestavia Hills Class 6A, Region 6 football game at Thompson Reynolds Stadium/Buddy Anderson Field highlight the festivities honoring 12 inductees in the inaugural class of the Vestavia Hills Sports Hall of Fame. Those being inducted include current AHSAA Hall of Fame members Buddy Anderson, Fran Braasch, Sammy Dunn and Thompson “Mutt” Reynolds. Reynolds started the athletic program at VHHS after a long, proud career at Ramsay. The football st

Arcuri Talks at the Congressional Baseball Game
For the past three years, I have participated in the Roll Call Congressional Baseball Game, which pits Democrat and Republican Members of Congress against each other in a charity game at Nationals' Park in Washington, DC. This year, I was honored to wear a uniform for the Oneonta Tigers of the NY-Penn League. Although the Democrats had struggled recently, we pulled out a big win this year beating the Republicans 15-10.
