Burberry Group plc (LSE: BRBY) is a British luxury fashion house, manufacturing clothing, fragrance, and fashion accessories. Its distinctive tartan pattern has become one of its most widely copied trademarks. Burberry is most famous for its iconic trench coat, which was invented by founder Thomas Burberry. The company has branded stores and franchises around the world, and also sells through concessions in third-party stores. HM Queen Elizabeth II and HRH The Prince of Wales have granted the company Royal Warrants. The Chief Creative Officer is Christopher Bailey. The company is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index.

According to Business Weekly, Burberry is the 98th most valuable brand in the world.^[2]

Early years, 19th century[link]

Burberry was founded in 1856 when 21-year-old Thomas Burberry, a former draper's apprentice, opened his own store in Basingstoke, Hampshire, England.^[3] By 1870, the business had established itself by focusing on the development of outdoors attire.^[3] In 1880, Burberry introduced in his brand the gabardine, a hardwearing, water-resistant yet breathable fabric, in which the yarn is waterproofed before weaving.^[3] Burberry was the original name, but then the company soon switched to using the name Burberrys, after many customers from around the world began calling it Burberrys of London. This name is still visible on many older Burberry products. In 1891, Burberry opened a shop in the Haymarket, London, which still exists and until recently was the site of Burberry’s corporate headquarters. Now the headquarters are at Horseferry House just behind Houses of Parliament, Westminster (London).

20th century[link]

In 1901, the Burberry Equestrian Knight Logo was developed containing the Latin word "Prorsum", meaning forwards, and registered as a trademark.^[3] In 1911 they became the outfitters for Roald Amundsen,^[3] the first man to reach the South Pole, and Ernest Shackleton, who led a 1914 expedition to cross Antarctica. A Burberry gabardine jacket was worn by George Mallory on his ill-fated attempt on Mount Everest in 1924.

In 1914 Burberry was commissioned by the War Office to adapt its officer's coat to suit the conditions of contemporary warfare, resulting in the "trench coat".^[3] After the war, the trench coat became popular with civilians. The iconic Burberry check was created in the 1920s and used as a lining in its trench coats.^[3]

Burberry also specially designed aviation garments. A. E. Clouston and Mrs Betsy Kirby Green made the fastest flying time to Cape Town from London in 1937 and were sponsored by Burberry.

Burberry was an independent company until 1955, when it was taken over by Great Universal Stores (GUS).

During the 1970s, the brand became popular with the British casual cult, leading to its being associated with members of football firms by the 1990s and chavs the following decade.^[4][5] Such a shift in a brand's clientele exemplifies prole drift.

In 1999, Burberry's changed their marketing name to Burberry. Most of their items changed too, but many accessory items still had the Burberry's name.

21st century[link]

Burberry Group plc was initially floated on the London Stock Exchange in July 2002.^[6] GUS divested its remaining interest in Burberry in December 2005.^[7]

In 2006 Rose Marie Bravo, who as Chief Executive had led Burberry to mass market success, retired.^[8] She was replaced by current CEO Angela Ahrendts.^[9]

Burberry first began selling online in the US, followed by the UK in October 2006, and the rest of the EU in 2007.^[10]

In May 2001, Christopher Bailey joined Burberry as creative director and became Chief Creative Officer in November 2009.^[11][12] Bailey is credited with transforming the fortunes of the company.^[11]

Burberry has attempted to rebrand itself with advertisements in GQ, Esquire, Vogue, Tatler and Harper's Bazaar, and is well known for using British celebrities in its advertising, including models Kate Moss, Agyness Deyn, Jourdan Dunn and Lily Donaldson, singer George Craig, actress Emma Watson, who was named the face of Burberry's 2009 Fall/Winter campaign and the cover model for the 2010 Spring/Summer campaign,^[13][14] and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, who was unveiled as the face of Burberry's newest fragrance, Burberry Body, in July 2011.^[15]

In June 2010, the Group launched its first cosmetics line, Burberry Beauty.^[16]

Cara Delevingne (born 22 August 1992) is a British model and socialite.^[2]

Career[link]

Delevingne is currently the face of Burberry's Spring Summer 2012 campaign alongside actor Eddie Redmayne, shot by Mario Testino.^[3] Delevingne was also featured in the brand's Spring Summer 2011 and Burberry Beauty campaigns.^[4]

She was recently described by British Vogue as the "star face" of the autumn/winter 2012-2013 show season, having walked the runway for brands such as Shiatzy Chen, Jason Wu, Oscar de la Renta, Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, Stella McCartney and Chanel.^[5]

Sarah Doukas, founder of Storm Model Management, said of Delevingne:

Delevingne is the granddaughter of former English Heritage boss Sir Jocelyn Stevens. Her mother Pandora is a personal shopper, and her father Charles is a property developer. Delevingne grew up in a Belgravia mansion, and attended the independent Bedales School. Her older sister is the model Poppy Delevingne.^[9][10]

Delevingne plays the drums, sings and writes acoustic songs.

The Daydream Club are a UK based Acoustic folk duo consisting of Northern lass Paula Walker and Midlands lad Adam Pickering. The band are based in Leicestershire, United Kingdom. Their début album ‘Overgrown' was released worldwide on Poco Poco Records on November 1st 2010. The album was produced, mixed and mastered by Shane Bowler. The pair describe their music lovingly as “drenched in dream-like soundscapes, and luscious melodies and imagery"^[1] Their understated description is humbled by the adoring reviews and comments received from Radio and Paper Reviews^[2][3][4][5]

The pair first met in January 2005 on a site-specific arts project in a derelict tobacco factory in Liverpool. The project was in conjunction with the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) where they both studied. Throughout their studies and after graduating they continued to collaborate on various projects and perused careers in their respective fields.
Paula Walker began her career as a professional dancer touring internationally with hit percussion show 'Noise Ensemble', headlining Henley Festival and working with Luc Petit (Director of Cirque Du Soleil). After enjoying a successful career in dance, Paula then moved into music and joined Adam Pickering to form The Daydream Club. Her melodious vocals added rich layers to Adam's musical soundscapes.
Adam Pickering, a multi-instrumentalist (keys, drums, guitar, bass, percussion, melodica) and veteran of the band circuit, has supported the likes of Sam Sparro, The Wombats, Sneaky Sound System, Tinchy Stryder, DJ Yoda and Felix B from Basement Jaxx. Adam began his career as a keys player in Electronic outfit Mongo lounge. After touring venues around the UK (including the prestigious Chibuku Shake Shake in Liverpool and London, Lake of Stars Music Festival in Malawi, Africa and AB+ Club in Turin, Italy) they decided to relocate to Sweden to continue their creative journey in inspiring rural surroundings. After relatively little success following the move, Adam decided to move back to the UK with a refreshed hunger and passion for the music scene. This led him to join electro pop band Defend Moscow at the end of 2007 as a drummer. Defend Moscow began to create a buzz, gaining positive reviews from the likes of NME and The Guardian, with their two 7” singles released on Kids records 'Die Tonight' and 'Manifesto'. During this time Adam was gaining respect for his remixes under the alias Lenny Picko, including: 'Warrior' Magic Wands, 'Manifesto' and 'Die Tonight' Defend Moscow and 'Something Golden' Le Corps Mince De Françoise. In 2008/9, through lack of funds, Defend Moscow called it a day and the band members dispersed to work on individual projects. With Adam Pickering once again living in Leicestershire he and Paula Walker collaborated again in 2009 to form The Daydream Club.

'Overgrown' was released on November 1, 2010 on indie label Poco Poco Records. Recorded at George Street Studios in Northampton, the album was produced, mixed and mastered by Shane Bowler and the album artwork was designed by James Bagnall.
The premise behind 'Overgrown' was to strip everything back to the bare bones of a song aiming to highlight the arrangement that remains. It was this idea that led to the intimate acoustic affair which is The Daydream Club's début release. Of the title record they say, "Overgrown is about losing sight of where you want to be but continuing on blindly regardless."

“This 13 track album touches upon various musical genres. “The Affair” is a dark, heart-wrenching tale supported by a dramatic composition that is reminiscent of old movie scores, with elements of both classical and jazz piano. This is in juxtaposition with “Square” which, with its simplistic lyrics, is more accessible and has an underlying pop sensibility. Folk influences are obvious in songs like “Be With You Always”, “The Record Shop” and “In The Arms of Another Day”. Warm vocal harmonies in “Alarms Ring Out” reflect on the impact of the recession. The rhythmically driven track “On The Move” showcases the percussive guitar skills of Adam Pickering, combined with the crystal vocals of Paula Walker.”

'Overgrown' gained 4/5 stars in Consequence of Sound^[6] The Daydream Club have gained radio exposure with 'The Record Shop', 'The Affair' and 'Square' on stations such as BBC 6 Music,^[7] BBC Nottingham, BBC Leicester, BBC Tees and Demon FM. Following the success of the tracks they were invited to do a live session and interview by Dean Jackson at BBC Radio Nottingham,^[8] which was also recorded as a Live Lounge style session.^[9] subsequently they were invited to Paula's Local radio station BBC Tees by Bob Fischer for another live session and Interview.^[10] The Daydream Club have also performed in the viral music channel BalconyTV^[11]

Christopher Bailey is a lecturer of English at the University of Brighton and is an occasional screenwriter for television.

He wrote the script for the Doctor Who serial Kinda in 1982. This script drew heavily on his own Buddhist faith and incorporated classic Buddhist terms such as dukkha, panna, karuna, devaloka and Mara — indeed, "the Mara" was the name of the villain of the piece.

The strength of his script led to Bailey writing a second story for Doctor Who in 1983. This serial, Snakedance, was a sequel to Kinda. New script editor Eric Saward requested that Bailey devise another story idea, but neither the submitted outline for May Time (later renamed Manwatch) for the show's twenty first season, nor the revised version of the submission for the twenty second, retitled The Children of Seth, were taken further. As a result, the two Mara scripts were Bailey's final broadcast work for both Doctor Who and television in general and he returned to a career in academia. The Children of Seth has since been adapted for audio by Big Finish.

Angela was born and raised in a small town in Indiana. She acquired her Merchandising and Marketing degree from Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana, from where she also received an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree in 2010.

She previously spent six years as President of Donna Karan International.
