Ajax to enlist three 'straight transfers'

MUHSIN Ertugral has signed a three-year contract with Ajax Cape Town and immediately stated the club need to add more experience to their young group.

NEW CONTRACT: Ajax coach Muhsin Ertugral

Ertugral revealed the club is looking to sign a goalkeeper, centre back and striker, and hinted that they may look to Ajax Amsterdam to fill the gaps in their squad.

The coach also confirmed that they had ended their interest in re-signing Mabhuti Khenyeza, who is still awaiting the outcome of his appeal over a 12-month suspension for allegedly spitting and swearing at an assistant referee.

"We are targeting players for those three positions, but we will not be having any more trialists," Ertugral said. "We will be looking at straight transfers. Obviously, it must fit into our budget, but we are also talking to Ajax Amsterdam to see if there are any players who could spend a year with us to help their development.

"That is an area of the relationship with Amsterdam that has been neglected a bit in the past, but if there is an opportunity to bring out a player from there who could make us better then why not?"

Ajax have already promoted six youngsters from their development ranks, bringing to 20 the number of players in the current squad who have come through the youth system at the team.

"Only Barcelona has more," Ertugral joked, before adding: "It is important that we give these youngsters an opportunity. I have a new batch of "chickens" and if we bring in too many new, more experienced players it will block their progress at the club.

"I believe that with the youngsters we have, and by adding three more experienced players, we will have a team that will surprise this coming season."

l Ajax start their season away against one of Ertugral's former clubs, Lamontville Golden Arrows on August 3.
