Psychophysiology (from Greek ψῡχή, psȳkhē, "breath, life, soul"; φύσις, physis, "nature, origin"; and -λογία, -logia) is the branch of psychology that is concerned with the physiological bases of psychological processes. While psychophysiology was a general broad field of research in the 1960s and 1970s, it has now become quite specialized, and has branched into subspecializations. For example, Social Psychophysiology, Cardiovascular Psychophysiology, Cognitive Psychophysiology, and Cognitive Neuroscience.

Some people have difficulty distinguishing a psychophysiologist from a physiological psychologist, two very different perspectives. Psychologists are interested in why we may fear spiders and physiologists may be interested in the input/output system of the amygdala. A psychophysiologist will attempt to link the two. Psychophysiologists generally study the psychological/physiological link in intact human subjects. While early psychophysiologists almost always examined the impact of psychological states on physiological system responses, since the 1970s, psychophysiologists also frequently study the impact of physiological states and systems on psychological states and processes. It is this perspective of studying the interface of mind and body that makes psychophysiologists most distinct.

John T. Cacioppo is the Tiffany and Margaret Blake Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago. He founded and is Director of the University of Chicago Center for Cognitive and Social Neuroscience and the Director of the Arete Initiative of the Office of the Vice President for Research and National Laboratories at the University of Chicago. He is a member of the Department of Psychology, Department of Psychiatry, and the College and one of the founders of the field of social neuroscience.

Cacioppo obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from The Ohio State University in 1977. He has served as the President of the Association for Psychological Science, the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, the Society for Consumer Psychology, and the Society for Psychophysiological Research and is currently the Chair-Elect of the Psychology Section of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has been elected as a Fellow in various societies including the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Society of Experimental Psychologists, the Society of Experimental Social Psychology, The Royal Society of Arts, and a Distinguished Member of Psi Chi. He is a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science, and member of the American Psychological Association, American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research, World Innovation Foundation, International Organization of Psychophysiology, Society for Personality and Social Psychology, and the Society of Behavioral Medicine.

John Jerome (1932-2002) was an American writer of nonfiction.

Jerome was born on November 7, 1932, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His father was Ralph Jerome, a draftsman for oil-drilling companies, and his mother was Gwendolyn (Stewart) Jerome. He graduated from high school in New Braunfels, Texas. He held a B.A. from North Texas State College (now University), received in 1955. In 1952, he married his first wife, Nancy Sellman. They had three children, Kathleen, Martin Stewart, and Julia.

After teaching in West Texas, Jerome went to work in 1959 as an editor for Sports Car Digest in Odessa, Texas. In 1962, he moved to New York City to serve as managing editor of Car and Driver magazine until 1964. After living in Detroit for a time, working as a copywriter, in 1965 he divorced his wife, and a year later married Christine McCall, a writer and editor.

In 1967 the Jeromes moved to New England. They lived in rural New Hampshire and then in rural western Massachusetts. Jerome freelanced as an editor and magazine writer, and wrote a dozen books, as well as the annual Complete Runner’s Day-by-Day Log and Calendar which he produced from 1986 through 2003.

Wendy Berry Mendes is the Sarlo/Ekman Associate Professor of Emotion at University of California, San Francisco. She was previously the John L. Loeb Associate Professor of Social Sciences at Harvard University. Her expertise is in the area of emotion, intergroup relationships, stigma and psychophysiology. At UCSF she is the founder and director of the Emotion, Health, and Psychophysiology Lab in the Department of Psychiatry.

Mendes received her bachelors and masters degrees from California State University, Long Beach. She then received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2003 and for two years she was a post-doctoral scholar at the University of California, San Francisco.

Mendes joined the faculty of Harvard in 2004 as an Assistant Professor of Psychology and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2008. She was a core faculty member of the Robert Wood Johnson Health and Society Scholars program which is run by the Harvard School of Public Health. In 2010 she accepted her current position at UC San Francisco. Her named chair is endowed by George Sarlo in honor of Paul Ekman's career contributions to the study of human emotion.
