Chiang Mai (/ˈtʃjɑːŋˈmaɪ/, from Thai: เชียงใหม่ [tɕʰiəŋ màj], Lanna:ᨩ᩠ᨿᨦᩉ᩠ᨾᩲ᩵ [t͡ɕīaŋ.màj]) sometimes written as "Chiengmai" or "Chiangmai", is the largest and most culturally significant city in Northern Thailand. It is the capital of Chiang Mai Province and was a former capital of the Kingdom of Lan Na (1296–1768), which became a tributary state of the Kingdom of Chiang Mai from 1774 to 1939. It is 700 km (435 mi) north of Bangkok and is situated amongst the highest mountains in the country. The city sits astride the Ping River, a major tributary of the Chao Phraya River.
Chiang Mai means "new city" and was so named because it became the new capital of the Lan Na kingdom when it was founded in 1296, succeeding Chiang Rai, the former capital founded in 1262.
Chiang Mai gained prominence in the political sphere in May 2006, when the Chiang Mai Initiative was concluded between the ASEAN nations and the "+3" countries (China, Japan, and South Korea). Chiang Mai was one of three Thai cities contending for Thailand's bid to host the World Expo 2020 (the others were Chonburi and Ayutthaya). Ayutthaya, however, was the city ultimately chosen by the Thai Parliament to register for the international competition.
Chiang Mai (Thai เชียงใหม่ , pronounced [t͡ɕʰīaŋ.màj]; Lanna:ᨩ᩠ᨿᨦᩉᩲ᩠ᨾ᩵, pronounced [tɕiaŋ.màj]) is the second-largest province (changwat) of Thailand. It is in the country's north. It is bordered by Chiang Rai to the northeast, Lampang and Lamphun to the south, Tak to the southwest, Mae Hong Son to the west, and Shan State of Burma to the north. The capital, Chiang Mai, is 685 km north of Bangkok.
Chiang Mai Province is about 685 km (426 mi) from Bangkok in the Mae Ping River basin and is on average at 300 m (1,000 ft) elevation. Surrounded by the mountain ranges of the Thai highlands, it covers an area of approximately 20,107 km2 (8,000 sq mi). The mountains of the Daen Lao Range (ทิวเขาแดนลาว) at the north end of the province, the Thanon Thong Chai Range (เทือกเขาถนนธงชัย) stretching in a north-south direction, and the Khun Tan Range in the east of the province are covered by rain forest. The Mae Ping, one of the major tributaries of the Chao Phraya River, originates in the Daen Lao mountains. The highest mountain in Thailand, Doi Inthanon at 2,565 metres (8,415 ft), is in Chiang Mai Province. Several other national parks are also in the province: Doi Suthep-Pui,Ob Luang,Sri Lanna,Huai Nam Dang, Mae Wang, and Pha Daeng.
The Ping River (Thai: แม่น้ำปิง, rtgs: Maenam Ping, IPA: [mɛ̂ːnáːm piŋ]), along with the Nan River, is one of the two main contributaries of Chao Phraya River. It originates at Doi Thuai, Daen Lao Range, in Chiang Dao district, Chiang Mai Province. After passing Chiang Mai town, it flows though the provinces Lamphun, Tak, and Kamphaeng Phet. At the confluence with the Nan River at Nakhon Sawan (also named Paknam Pho in Thai) it forms the Chao Phraya River.
China (知名町, China-chō, IPA: [tɕina]) is a town located on Okinoerabujima, in Ōshima District, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan.
As of June 2013, the town has an estimated population of 6,506 and a population density of 122 persons per km². The total area is 53.29 km².
China is located on the southern end of Okinoerabujima. The town's one kilometre-long Yakomo Beach is about five minutes from the harbor by bus.NHK describes it as one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. Other natural seaside attractions include Ushishi Beach (ウシシ海岸) and Tamina Cape (田皆岬).
Another tourist attraction in the town is the 3,500-meter long Shōryū Caves (昇竜洞). They were discovered in 1963 and partially opened to the public that same year.
The climate is classified as humid subtropical (Köppen climate classification Cfa) with very warm summers and mild winters. Precipitation is high throughout the year, but is highest in the months of May, June and September. The area is subject to frequent typhoons.
The Chiang Mai Initiative (CMI) is a multilateral currency swap arrangement among the ten members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the People's Republic of China (including Hong Kong), Japan, and South Korea. It draws from a foreign exchange reserves pool worth US$120 billion and was launched on 24 March 2010. That pool has been expanded to $240 billion in 2012.
The initiative began as a series of bilateral swap arrangements after the ASEAN Plus Three countries met on 6 May 2000 in Chiang Mai, Thailand, at an annual meeting of the Asian Development Bank. After 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, member countries started this initiative to manage regional short-term liquidity problems and to facilitate the work of other international financial arrangements and organisations like International Monetary Fund.
In this Hong Siew Ching Speaker Series event, Dr Yoichi Nemoto discussed the key developments in ASEAN+3 (China, Japan, Korea) financial cooperation in the last decade, specifically in the macroeconomic surveillance. The talk also focused on the evolution of macroeconomic surveillance in the ASEAN+3 region and its relationship with the Chiang Mai framework, as well as the challenges of integrating regional surveillance with that of the existing global financial architecture. Nemoto also shared that While the recent European crisis served as a turning point in fostering closer ties between global and regional frameworks, policymakers need to continue to study the long term agenda of such frameworks to better safeguard against future crises. To further understand the talk, you may wish to r...

November, 2006 - Yui ran into an old friend, Che Wan on the streets of Chiang Mai, which was fortuitous as we were looking for some coffee and he had just opened a coffee shop. Che Wan built the cute little stand with the farm animal diorama himself and on the first day of business he and his sister were giving the coffee away free to get people to try it. It was so good we had to pay for it. His coffee is locally produced and much cheaper than the Starbucks around the corner.

All video content straight from the camera - always learning new things about video...I already wish I had taken more footage and used a higher contrast ...

Thai people have excellent cooking skills; as a result, there are several budget restaurants like Kow Soi Samoe Chai, Chiang Mai. Kow Soi Samoe Chai is an exceptional place and offers heavenly food at wallet-friendly prices. This restaurant is placed just 10 minutes from the city centre, and you can easily each through song taew (red cab) or tuk-tuk. From outside it looks humble. The walls inside are all covered with photos of politicians, film-stars and local celebrities. The Thai people love such interiors. If we talk about signature dish at Kow Soi Samoe Chai, Chiang Mai, then it is Kow Soi. Kow Soi is a tasty yellow curry with soft egg noodles within and crispy fried egg-noodles on top. The origin of this fare is from Burma and it comes with pork or chicken varieties. The flavors are ...
