In this Wednesday, June 9, 2010 photo, children farm in Yangalma village, where most of the children suffering from lead poisoning come from, in Gusau, Nigeria. Among the flat lands and dried-out creekbeds of northern Zamfara state, Nigerian officials say more than 160 people have died from lead poisoning, the majority of them children. At least six villages remain contaminated with the lead, released during illegal, but highly profitable gold mining in the poor region

Poll workers wait for voters in an empty polling station soon after the opening of polls, in Kidal, Mali Sunday, July 28, 2013. Chaos reigned at Kidal's main polling station, where voters struggled to find their names on voter rolls, and lists posted outside some bureaus either blew away or failed to match lists inside. This desert town and the surrounding region house just 0.5 percent of the people who registered to vote in Mali's presidential election, a number likely to have little impact on the race's outcome. Yet experts say the future of Mali is likely going to be decided by how this region that has been at the epicenter of multiple rebellions handles Sunday's poll. Belfast Telegraph

Volcano Popocatepetl, a large strato volcano located approximately 70 kilometers southeast of Mexico City, is considered by many volcanologists to be the planets riskiest volcano. The volcano warrants this distinction because of how close it is to one of the most densely populated mega cities on Earth: near 23 million people lived in Mexico City in 2009. The variety of potential volcanic hazards at Popocatepetl is also considerable, including explosive eruptions of ash, pyroclastic flows (hot, fluid avalanches of rock fragments and gas), and debris avalanches. This detailed astronaut photograph of the summit crater of Popocatepetl (image center) also highlights Ventorillo and Noroccidental Glaciers. Together with the ice on nearby Iztacchuatl Volcano and Pico de Orizaba (Mexicos highest peak and the highest volcano in North America), Popocatepetls glaciers are the only mountain glaciers in tropical North America.
