Staff colleges (also command and staff colleges and war colleges) train military officers in the administrative, staff and policy aspects of their profession. It is usual for such training to occur at several levels in a career. For example, an officer may be sent to various staff courses: as a captain they may be sent to a single service command and staff school to prepare for company command and equivalent staff posts; as a major to a single or joint service college to prepare for battalion command and equivalent staff posts; and as a colonel or brigadier to a higher staff college to prepare for brigade and division command and equivalent postings.
The success of Staff Colleges spawned, in the mid-twentieth century, a civilian imitation in what are called administrative staff colleges. These institutions apply some of the principles of the education of the military colleges to the executive development of managers from both the public and private sectors of the economy. The first and best-known administrative staff college was established in Britain at Greenlands near Henley, Oxfordshire and is now renamed Henley Management College.

Since its inception in 1881 as the School of Application for Infantry and Cavalry, the Command and General Staff College (CGSC) has evolved to meet the educational and operational needs of the United States Army. Since World War II, it has generally been known as the school for Army majors, though the College contains other schools and it educates officers from other military services and from other countries. Since 2008, the CGSC is part of CAC Leader Development and Education (CAC LD&E;), along with a number of other schools and centers whose missions are centered on leader development and education. Most military innovations involve the employment of some technological development. Yet, one of the most influential of such innovations is the development of the General Staff, which one British author referred to as “the Brain of an Army.” First developed in Prussia, this much-imitated organization was essential to success in war since the 1860s. Jonathan House is Professor of Military History at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. A graduate of Hamilton College, he received both his doctorate in French military history and his commission in the U.S. Army at the University of Michigan in 1975. House retired as a colonel of Military Intelligence. He is the author of Combined Arms Warfare in the Twentieth Century (2001), A Military History of the Cold War, 1944-1962 (20...
