Deool (Marathi: देऊळ, English: The Temple) is a 2011 Indian Marathi film directed by Umesh Vinayak Kulkarni and produced by Abhijeet Gholap. The film stars Girish Kulkarni, Nana Patekar, Dilip Prabhawalkar, Sonali Kulkarni in lead roles. The film is about the effect of globalization on India's small towns and the terrible state of Indian villages, with a political back-drop.

Deool won the 59th National Film Awards for Best Feature Film,^[1] Best Actor (Girish Kulkarni) and Best Dialogue (Girish Kulkarni).^[2]

The film also marks the debut of veteran Hindi film actor Naseeruddin Shah in Marathi film industry.^[3]

Release[link]

Deool was scheduled to be released on September 23, 2011 but was later postponed to November.^[4] It was shown in Busan International Film Festival, South Korea, New York's South Asian International Film Festival, the Abu Dhabi International Film Festival and MAMI in Mumbai,^[5] and was released on November 4, 2011 nationwide.

Music of Deool was composed by Mangesh Dhakade and lyrics were penned by Swanand Kirkire, Sudhir Moghe.^[6]

Awards and recognition[link]

Deool gathered positive reviews from critics on release. Daily News & Analysis (DNA) gave the film a 4 star rating out of 5 saying, "There’s too much going for Deool. It is an Indian language film to be proud of. For God’s sake, don’t miss it."^[7]

The movie won maximum number of awards (3) at 59th National Film Awards in 2011.

Girish Pandurang Kulkarni is a National Award winning Indian film actor, writer, and producer. He is known for Marathi films such as Valu (The Wild Bull), Vihir (The Well) and Deool (The Temple).^[1][2]

Girish Kularni was born and brought up in Pune. He did his Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from Latur. While studying in Latur, he was involved in local stage plays. After finishing his diploma he worked for a private company for some time but decided to pursue career in writing.

All of the characters he wrote enacts the authentic village people and hence tend to have real rather than reel feel to it. All the movies that he wrote shows the wide spectrum of writing capabilities. Valu was simple, light movie describing various stereotype characters found in an Indian village through a simple story about a Wild Bull which needs to be caught. In Gabhricha Paus, he describes a tragic story of an Indian farmer from a small village in Vidarbha who is suffering because of low rain, evil money lenders and negligence of farmers by Indian government. Vihir on the contrary was an abstract movie which tells a story about a adolescent boy who sets out to understand the meaning of life and death after his cousin and close friend dies. Vihir was screened at Berlin Festival and garnered a huge appreciation from all over the world. His latest movie was Deool, which portrays how politicians manipulate the belief of people in the name of God. His new movie "Masala" will be releasing on 20th April 2012.
