With the Mangyan of Mindoro
With the Mangyan of Mindoro
The Mangyan, the small people on the island of Mindoro, are seen by many in the Philippines as backward and lacking in culture. These people used to own the island, but for many years now, their land has been taken away from them and they are being pushed back into the mountains. The missionary, Ewald Dinter, provides them with support, not only in the struggle for their land. As the leader of the Mangyan Mission he tries to provide them with education opportunities and to preserve their cultural identity.

"Mailap na Mangyan" Dokumentaryo ni Kara David Forced to live under the shadow of another Mangyan Tribe, for years the Bangons escaped notice from the lowlanders. They retreated to the mountains of Mindoro and avoided modern influence. As more and more lowlanders explored the hinterlands, things drastically changed and threatened the traditional ways of these elusive people. With no other place to run to, they are slowly forced to assimilate and accept modern influence. However, things were not easy for the Bangons. The desire to hold on to their own culture has made them the target of discrimination from those who know little of them. This has forced some to accept new ways of life and slowly let go of their unique and colorful tradition. The few who remain steadfast in staying true to their culture are said to have retreated even deeper into the mountains.

Mangyan song
Mangyan song
Mangyan is the collective name of seven indigenous tribes that inhabit Philippines Occidental Mindoro. In numbers, they are an ethnic and linguistic minority group of less than 25000. Not only are the Mangyan physically and socially isolated from the rest of the Filipino population, but they are also among the poorest and most marginalised. A Mangyan family earns on average just $0.34 a day. Nine out of ten Mangyan have poor access to safe drinking water and the majority are illiterate. Historically nomadic and forest gatherers, the tribes often struggle to feed themselves, particularly during the rainy season which lasts four months. It is such a routine part of their life that they refer to it as "hungry period" like any other season of the year. The consequences are obvious as 60% of Mangyan children are malnourished and infant mortality rates are so high that a child is considered fortunate to reach the age of 10. The song is about the Mangyans being one with nature. The reclusive tribes are facing increasing attempts of exploitation of their land for mining and other commercial activities. The song is roughly translated as below: "Friends with air, water, sky, land, forests, and nature -- our source of life. We live together in harmony in love and freedom." "We are friends with air which help us breathe" "We are friends with water which helps us grow our plants for a good harvest to survive" "We are friends with the skies where the stars, moon and sun give us light ...
