There aren't any specific causes of presbycusis, but most people who suffer from it have an onset of symptoms starting in their 50s 4. People with presbycusis usually have more trouble hearing high-pitched frequencies than low-pitched frequencies 5. The condition usually affects both ears at the same time 6. While scientists are unsure of the exact cause, exposure to loud prolonged noise can exacerbate the condition 7. Additionally, other factors like diet, smoking, diabetes, hypertension and other conditions may contribute to presbycusis 8. Doctors frequently suggest hearing aids for people suffering from this condition 9. Occasionally cochlear implants may be suggested in severe cases 10. Treatments like coenzyme Q10 and a drug called Tanakan are currently being researched 11. However, these treatments and most others currently being studied, are still in the early stages of research
