Joe Lauzon

Joseph Edward Lauzon Jr. (born May 22, 1984) is an American mixed martial artist competing in the UFC's Lightweight division. He has 13 post-fight bonuses, the most in the UFC history. Joe's younger brother, Dan Lauzon, is also a mixed martial artist.

Background

Lauzon was born in Brockton, Massachusetts, where he lived until he was in the third grade, when he moved to East Bridgewater. Lauzon lived on a small farm and enjoyed bull riding. The young Lauzon and his friends had an interest in professional wrestling, and would re-enact moves on Lauzon's trampoline. Lauzon did not begin training in the martial arts until his junior year at East Bridgewater High School, after seeing a demonstration that piqued his interest. Lauzon graduated from Wentworth Institute of Technology in 2006 with a Bachelor's degree in computer science. He worked as a network administrator in Cambridge, Massachusetts before he began training in mixed martial arts full-time.

UFC Ultimate Fight Night

UFC Ultimate Fight Night (also known as UFC Fight Night 1) was a mixed martial arts event held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship on August 6, 2005. The event took place at University of Nevada's Cox Pavilion, Las Vegas, Nevada and was broadcast live on Spike TV in the United States and Canada.

Background

It was the second-ever UFC event on free television, with the telecast drawing over two million viewers for a 1.5 overall rating in the United States.

With his victory at the event, Nate Quarry became the first The Ultimate Fighter participant to earn a title shot in the organization. He fought for the UFC Middleweight Championship against Rich Franklin at UFC 56.

Nate Marquardt tested positive for nandrolone at the post-fight drug test following his win over Ivan Salaverry.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is a mixed martial arts promotion company. It is the largest in the world and features most of the top-ranked fighters in the sport. Based in the United States, the UFC produces events worldwide that showcase ten weight divisions and abide by the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts. The UFC has held over 300 events to date. The first Ultimate Fighting Championship event was held on November 12, 1993 at the McNichols Sports Arena in Denver, Colorado. The purpose of the early Ultimate Fighting Championship competitions were to identify the most effective martial art in a fight, with minimal rules, between competitors of different fighting disciplines, including boxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Sambo, wrestling, Muay Thai, karate, judo, and other styles. In subsequent competitions, fighters began adopting effective techniques from more than one discipline, which indirectly helped create an entirely separate style of fighting known as present-day mixed martial arts.

Melvin Guillard

Melvin Paul Guillard, Jr. (born March 30, 1983) is an American mixed martial artist currently competing in Bellator MMA's lightweight division. Guillard most notably competed in the lightweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) where he went (12–9) and World Series of Fighting (WSOF) where he went (1–1). He debuted in the company on The Ultimate Fighter 2 television series, losing to Josh Burkman by decision in the first Welterweight elimination bout. Guillard currently holds the UFC record for most TKO/KO victories (eight) in the Lightweight division, surpassing the previous record held by Multi-Divisional Champion B.J. Penn with his knockout of Shane Roller at UFC 132. He again extended this record in his knockout victory over Mac Danzig at UFC on Fox: Johnson vs. Moraga.

Background

Born and raised in Louisiana, Guillard competed in various sports such as basketball before he began wrestling at Bonnabel High School. Guillard was talented, becoming a State Champion in his senior year, winning the Class 5A MVP award, and also was a member of the Louisiana Junior National Team for two years. Guillard continued competing for one year at Colby College in Kansas and graduated with a degree in criminal law. Guillard had originally become drawn to mixed martial arts due to his wrestling coach's connections with the sport, and had the goal of fighting professionally by his early teens. By the time he was 16 years old, Guillard was preparing to fight professionally.
