Louis Whitley Strieber ( /ˈstriːbər/; born June 13, 1945) is an American writer best known for his horror novels The Wolfen and The Hunger and for Communion, a non-fiction account of his perceived experiences with non-human entities. He has maintained a dual career of author (of fiction) and advocate of alternative concepts (through non-fiction, his Unknown Country website, and his internet podcast, Dreamland).

Early life[link]

Strieber was born in San Antonio, Texas, the son of Karl Strieber, a lawyer and Mary Drought Strieber. He attended Central Catholic Marianist High School in San Antonio, Texas. He was educated at the University of Texas at Austin and the London School of Film Technique, graduating from each in 1968. He then worked for several advertising firms in New York City, rising to the level of vice president before leaving in 1977 to pursue a writing career.

Fiction[link]

Strieber began his career as a novelist with the horror novels The Wolfen (1978) and The Hunger (1981), each of which was later made into a movie, followed by the less successful horror novels Black Magic (1982) and The Night Church (1983).

Strieber then turned to speculative fiction. He wrote Warday (1984), about the dangers of limited nuclear warfare, and Nature's End (1986), a novel about environmental apocalypse, collaboratively with James Kunetka. He is also the author of Wolf of Shadows (1985), a young adult novel set in the aftermath of a nuclear war.

In 1986, Strieber's fantasy novel Catmagic was published, co-authored with Jonathan Barry, who was billed as an aerospace industry consultant and a practicing witch. In the 1987 paperback edition, Strieber states that Jonathan Barry is fictitious and that he is the author of Catmagic. Strieber's personal publishing company, Walker & Collier, is named after two characters in Catmagic.

Later, less successful thrillers by Strieber (all now out of print) include Billy (1990), The Wild (1991), Unholy Fire (1992) and The Forbidden Zone (1993).

He later returned to the vampire saga that began with The Hunger, adding The Last Vampire (2001) and Lilith's Dream (2002) to the story.

His novel of alien abduction The Grays (2006) makes use of his alleged experiences of the phenomenon.

The author's short stories were collected in the 1997 limited edition volume Evenings with Demons. More recent short stories include "The Good Neighbor", published in Twilight Zone: 19 Original Stories on the 50th Anniversary, and "The Christmas Spirits", published as an e-book.

On December 26, 1985, Strieber reportedly was abducted from his cabin in upstate New York by non-human beings. He wrote about these experiences in his first non-fiction book, Communion (1987). Although the book is perceived generally as an account of alien abduction, Strieber draws no conclusions about the identity of alleged abductors. He refers to the beings as "the visitors," a name chosen to be as neutral as possible to entertain the possibility that they are not extraterrestrials and may instead exist in his mind. He has repeatedly expressed his frustration with what he feels are fantastic claims attributed incorrectly to him.

Strieber wrote four additional autobiographies detailing his experiences with the visitors, Transformation (1988), Breakthrough (1995), The Secret School (1996), and Solving the Communion Enigma: What Is to Come (2011).

In Solving the Communion Enigma, Strieber restates what he'd detailed in Communion, and reflects on how advances in scientific understanding since his 1987 publication may shed light on what he perceived, noting, "Among other things, since I wrote Communion, science has determined that parallel universes may be physically real and that time travel may in some way be possible".

This latest work is a consolidation of UFO-related sightings and phenomena to include crop circles, abductions, mutilations and deaths in an attempt to discern any kind of meaningful overall pattern. Strieber concludes from his researches and considerable personal experience that we as a species are being shepherded to a higher level of understanding and beingness within this endless "multiverse" of matter, energy, space and time.

He also writes more candidly about the deleterious effects his experiences had upon him while staying at his upstate New York cabin in the 1980s, noting "I was regularly drinking myself to sleep when we were there. I would listen to the radio until late hours, drinking vodka...".^[1]

Other visitor-themed books of Strieber's include Majestic (1989), a novel about the Roswell UFO incident and The Communion Letters (1997, reissued in 2003), a collection of letters from readers reporting experiences similar to Strieber's. Confirmation (1998), despite its title does not propose that there has been 'confirmation' of UFOs or abductions. It analyzes the evidence and discusses what would be required to provide 'confirmation'. A 2006 novel, The Grays, presented his impression of alien contact through a fictional narrative.

Strieber wrote the screenplay for the 1989 film Communion, directed by Philippe Mora and starring Christopher Walken as Strieber. The movie covers material from the novel Communion and a sequel Transformation and which has themes not present in the books. Strieber stated in interviews years after the movie's release that he was dissatisfied with the film. When pushed, he indicated that he was displeased with Christopher Walken's inauthentic portrayal of him.

The Master of the Key[link]

In the pre-dawn hours of June 6, 1998 Strieber was allegedly visited in his Toronto hotel room by a mysterious but very ordinary-looking elderly Caucasian man who delivered an unsolicited lecture covering various subjects from spirituality to the environment. When queried the man airily suggested that he might be called "Michael" but Whitley has taken to referring to him as the "Master of the Key". Strieber first reported the visit in his online journal in 1998 and later gave a more complete account in his self-published book The Key (2001). Skeptics have pointed out that The Key and the 1998 journal entries give different (not contradictory but non-overlapping) accounts of what the man said. Strieber's mention of his personally-devised system of shorthand or abbreviated note-taking in an interview with George Knapp on June 19, 2011 might at least partially account for this apparent discrepancy as the author had to reconstruct the entire 45-minute conversation with his visitor from a series of barely-legible squiggles he discovered by his hotel bedside upon re-awakening from deep sleep much later that same morning. He also chose to emphasize different subjects or aspects of the exchange according to how he surmised they could best be assimilated by his readers. Strieber claims that the stranger in his room informed him that humans have an electron floating in front of their foreheads, and that that may indeed be their soul. He also claimed the stranger handed him a vial of unknown white liquid, instructed him to drink it, and he did.

Before publishing The Key Strieber co-authored, with Art Bell, The Coming Global Superstorm (1999), a book about the possibility of rapid and destructive climate change. He has said that it was based largely on things the Master of the Key had told him about the environment. The book served as the inspiration for the disaster film The Day After Tomorrow (2004) and Strieber later wrote a novelization of that movie.

Another recent book Strieber says was inspired by the teachings of the Master of the Key is the self-published The Path (2002) which deals with the symbolism of the Tarot of Marseilles.

Current works[link]

Whitley Strieber is currently the host of the paranormal and fringe science-themed internet podcast, Dreamland, available on a weekly basis from his website, Unknown Country. The program was a former companion show to Coast to Coast AM, with both shows founded by broadcaster Art Bell, before being taken on by Strieber in 1999.

Strieber has also returned to writing novels in recent years, including The Last Vampire (2001), and Lilith's Dream (2003), both being sequels to his 1981 vampire novel The Hunger. As well, he has authored 2012: The War For Souls (2007), a horror novel about an interdimensional invasion, and Critical Mass (2009), a thriller about nuclear terrorism. Strieber also co-authored the graphic novel The Nye Incidents (2008), along with co-authors Craig Spector and Guss Floor.

His new novel, The Omega Point, is a novel "based on a hidden connection between 2012 and the Book of Revelation".^[2] This title released in 2010 is Strieber's second novel dealing with the subject of 2012, the first being his novel "2012: The War for Souls." "The Omega Point" details the coming events surrounding 2012. Strieber is effectively outlining three ways in which humanity may evolve, each of which are equally disturbing.

An entry in the popular teen-lit genre, Melody Burning, was published in late 2011. The story centers on a feral teenager who lives within a skyrise building unnoticed, and a new tenant, a pop-star named Melody, with whom he falls in love.

Strieber wrote an essay in Timothy Greenfield-Sanders nude portrait book, XXX: 30 Porn Star Photographs and appears in interviews in Thinking XXX, a 2004 HBO documentary about the making of that book.

He makes a cameo appearance in the 2009 movie Race to Witch Mountain.

Cultural influences[link]

In the TV series Babylon 5, there is an alien race that is similar to the Greys in Communion. This race is named the Streib after Whitley Strieber.

In an episode of The X-Files, "Jose Chung's From Outer Space", the cover of the book From Outer Space is a parody of the cover of Communion (the difference being that the alien on the cover is depicted smoking a cigarette). Another episode, "Detour", is a scene-for-scene remake of the film version of Strieber's book, Wolfen.

In the 120th book in The Hardy Boys series, "The Case of the Cosmic Kidnapping" (1993), the character of "Hodding Wheatley", a Connecticut based writer who had undergone UFO experiences, is inspired by Strieber, as the surname of the character makes plain ("Wheatley" being Whitley).

Swedish Progressive Metal band Evergrey wrote their 2001 concept album, In Search of Truth, around the ideas presented in "Communion" after the band's singer Tom S. Englund read the book.

Personal life[link]

Whitley Streiber is currently a practicing Catholic. He was also formerly associated with the Gurdjieff Foundation. He left the Foundation shortly before the experiences reported in Communion but remains interested in the mystical teachings of G. I. Gurdjieff and P. D. Ouspensky and makes frequent references to them in his non-fiction writings.

Strieber is married to Anne Strieber. They have a son, Andrew, an internet content producer, who appears in Communion and several of Strieber's novels (for example, Warday).

Conflicting opinions[link]

Whitley Strieber has repeatedly expressed frustration that his experiences have been taken as "alien contact" when he does not actually know what they were. While many support his work and the mainstream media largely ignores it, there has also been speculation that Strieber's accounts are neither fabricated nor entirely accurate. Strieber has reported anomalous childhood experiences and suggested that he may have suffered some sort of early interference by intelligence and/or military agencies.^[3] He was extensively tested for Temporal Lobe Epilepsy and other brain abnormalities at his own request, but his brain was found to be functioning normally. The results of these tests were reported in his book Transformation. An early confusion about whether or not he was present at the infamous clocktower shooting incident that occurred at the University of Texas was mentioned in the Strieber biography "Report on Communion," but the confusion was found to be due to traumatic amnesia, which typically occurs in situations of extreme stress, such as being shot at.^[4]

David Wilcock (born 8 March 1973 in Rotterdam, New York) is a lecturer, author, and filmmaker based in Los Angeles, California.^[2]

Biography[link]

Along with Wynn Free, Wilcock co-authored the book The Reincarnation of Edgar Cayce?^[3] in 2004. Wilcock has appeared on several radio programs, including semi-regular appearances on Coast to Coast AM, and he had a role in the Syfy documentary 2012. He is a proponent of the theory that a large segment of humanity will undergo ascension in the year 2012. He also appeared in several episodes of the History Channel series Ancient Aliens.^[4]

Wilcock graduated from the State University of New York at New Paltz with a BA in Psychology.

Wilcock is the author of the 2011 non-fiction book The Source Field Investigations,^[5] which debuted at #18 on the The New York Times Best Seller list on September 11, 2011.^[6]

Controversial claims[link]

Wilcock has made some controversial claims, most notably that he may be the reincarnation of Edgar Cayce.^[7][8][9] In his book The Source Field Investigations (2011) he argues against the modern evolutionary synthesis by claiming that DNA and biological life emerge directly out of an energy source field.^[10]

Nicholas "Nick" Redfern born 1964 in Pelsall, Walsall, Staffordshire is a British best-selling author, Ufologist and Cryptozoologist now living in Dallas, Texas, U.S..^[1][2]

Redfern is an active advocate of official disclosure, and has worked to uncover thousands of pages of previously-classified Royal Air Force, Air Ministry and Ministry of Defence files on UFOs dating from the Second World War from the Public Record Office and currently works as a feature writer and contributing editor for Phenomena magazine.^{[3][4][1][5][6]}

Redfern attended Pelsall Comprehensive School in Pelsall from 1976 to 1981. He also worked at Dixons paint suppliers with another ufologist Martin Lenton

Redfern joined a rock music and fashion magazine Zero in 1981; where he trained in journalism, writing, magazine production and photography, later going on write freelance articles on UFOs during the mid-1980s.

From 1984 until 2001 he worked as a freelance feature writer for the Daily Express, People, Western Daily Press and Express & Star newspapers, as well as a full-time feature writer Planet on Sunday. Between 1996 and 2001 he worked as a freelance journalist for the following newsstand magazines in Britain: The Weekender, Animals, Animals, Animals, Pet Reptile, Military Illustrated, Eye-Spy, The Unopened Files and The X-Factor.^[7]

Between 1996 and 2000 Redfern signed a three-book publishing deal with Simon & Schuster of London for the publication of A Covert Agenda: The British Government’s UFO Top Secrets Exposed (1997), The FBI Files: The FBI’s UFO Top Secrets Exposed (1998) and Cosmic Crashes: The Incredible Story of the UFOs That Fell to Earth (2000). These books were published in the UK, Canada, Russia, Poland, Australia, New Zealand and Portugal.

In 2003 Paraview-Pocket Books New York published Nick Redfern’s book Strange Secrets: Real Government Files on the Unknown in May of that year. And, in March 2004 Paraview-Pocket Books, New York, publish his book Three Men Seeking Monsters: Six Weeks in Pursuit of Werewolves, Lake Monsters, Giant Cats, Ghostly Devil Dogs, and Ape-Men. This book tells the story of his relationship with Jonathan Downes and Richard Freeman of the Centre for Fortean Zoology, and has been optioned by Universal Studios.^[8] Redfern has run the U.S branch of the CFZ since 2002.^[4]

Redfern has appeared on a variety of television programmes in the UK, including The Big Breakfast; Channel 5 News; and GMTV and works on the lecture circuit,^[3] both in the UK and overseas, and has appeared in internationally syndicated shows discussing the UFO phenomenon. He also appeared on a show in the 3rd season of Penn & Teller: Bullshit! entitled "Ghost Busters."^[9][10] He is also a regular on the History Channel programs Monster Quest and UFO Hunters as well as National Geographic Channels's Paranormal and the SyFY channel's Proof Positive.^[4]

In 2007 Universal Studios bought the rights to Redfern's book: "Three Men Seeking Monsters: Six Weeks in Pursuit of Werewolves, Lake Monster, Giant Cats, Ghostly Devil Dogs and Ape-Men" in the hopes of making a movie from it.^[11][12]
