Paul Kagame: Africans can't permanently stay in a 'victim' position | Talk to Al Jazeera
Paul Kagame has ruled Rwanda for 23 years.
The small, landlocked country of 13 million people has come a long way since the civil war and genocide of 1994. Rwanda’s significant progress in education, technology, healthcare and security has made the nation an African success story.
But is living under Kagame’s government an African utopia? And as his influence in the region expands along with the country’s geopolitical role, is Rwanda proving a disruptive force in the region?
The president of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, talks to Al Jazeera.

Paul Kagame: Transforming Rwanda | Talk to Al Jazeera
Paul Kagame took office just six years after the 1994 genocide, in which some 800,000 people were slaughtered in an ethnic conflict.
But although Rwanda has transformed into what many consider “Africa’s tech hub” and achieved rapid economic growth, it has struggled to leave its dark past behind.
And while many see Kagame as a visionary leader, others claim he is a threat to democracy.
After winning his third term in 2017 with nearly 99 percent of the vote, how much longer is he planning to hold on to power? The president of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, talks to Al Jazeera.

In the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo an insurgency by the rebel M23 group of army mutineers threatens to plunge that part of the country into open conflict. The group's leaders all used to fight with another armed group, folded into the army three years ago. And they say, they mutinied to force the government to honour its agreement. But now a panel of UN investigators has accused Rwanda of backing M23, apparently to try and create a friendly semi-autonomous state just over the border. Paul Kagame, Rwanda's president, recently appeared at a parade to celebrate the country's 50th anniversary of independence. Although his country has repeatedly sent troops into the Congo in the past, he denies supporting anyone over the border now. But the United Nations which is helping fight off the M23 rebels say they are too well-equipped and too well-trained to be just another bunch of Congolese soldiers. If the crisis continues, the UN warns that it could spread into a regional crisis. Today on Talk To Al Jazeera, President Paul Kagame defends his record and explains why his country is only interested in peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Twenty-five years on from the genocide in Rwanda that saw as many as one million people slaughtered, FRANCE 24 interviews President Paul Kagame, alongside EU Development Commissioner Neven Mimica, at the European Development Days event in Brussels.
In the last quarter-century, Rwanda's people, economy and development have moved on from the killings to such a point that the country is often held up to other nations undergoing conflict, violence and political turmoil as a positive example.
However, as Rwanda's GDP per capita is ranked 36th in Africa at $2,081*, government investments such as the multimillion-pound sponsorship of the UK's Arsenal Football Club have raised questions about Kigali's development investment strategy.
Meanwhile, human rights concerns remain: the European Union's 2018 human rights report highlights "serious violations of civil and political rights". FRANCE 24 asks President Kagame why his response to this report is that it is "ridiculous".
And as the EU Commission prepares to renew itself, we ask what priorities the European Union has for development as a whole, and for Rwanda specifically.
