Lin He, Violin and Matthew Daline, Viola Live at UNT performing Halvorsen- Passacaglia Duo Johan Halvorsen (1864-1935) Passacaglia (Duo for Violin and Viola, after Handel), 1894 Halvorsen was a Norwegian violinist, composer and conductor. He studied at the Stockholm Conservatory, as well as in Leipzig, Berlin and Leige. He was appointed conductor of the theatre in Bergen in 1892, and served as conductor of the Christiania National Theatre from 1899-1929, where he directed over 25 operas as well as orchestral concerts. Halvorsen's compositions developed from the national romantic tradition of Grieg and Svendson but in a distinctive style marked by brilliant orchestration. To judge by the Schwann catalog of Classical Music, Halvorsen's compositions are now enjoying a revival in his homeland. Previously his fame rested on two works, arrangements of movements from the harpsichord suites of George Friedrich Handel (1685-1759). Handel composed 12 suites for harpsichord. The Passacaglia is taken from Suite #7 in G Minor where it serves as the sixth movement. This work is very demanding on the performers; part of its virtuosity entails having the two instruments simulate the sonority of a string quartet, through the use of double stops (the playing of two or more tones simultaneously on the violin and related string instruments). The Passacaglia is a form of baroque music said to derive from a Spanish dance. It unfolds as a continuous theme, usually in moderately slow triple meter, with a slow harmonic rhythm changing generally with the measure.

It is always been a big inspiration for us performing such masterpiece, written by the German Born British Baroque Composer Georg Frideric Handel (23 February 1685 -- 14 April 1759) and arranged for both Violin and Viola and Violin and Cello duos by the Norwegian Composer, Conductor, and Violinist Johan Halvorsen (15 March 1864 -- 4 December 1935). The Violin and Cello version is being performed quite often lately, and commonly preferred by many concert musicians to include in recital programs, also as an encore piece. The Passacaglia in G minor is one of the most popular string duos in the musical world. We, Danny and Sofia, decided to record it Live in our own studio for later single release, or as a bonus track of our new CD, soon to approach the market, most-likely before the end of 2013. We would like to dedicate this performance and later release to the Loving Memory of the World Renowned Cello Performing Artist and Professor Eleonore Shoenfeld (1925 -- January 1, 2007), our teacher, mentor, and dear friend. Johan Halvorsen : Chant de Veslemoy Johan Halvorsen 요한 할보르센 (15 March 1864 -- 4 December 1935) was a Norwegian composer, conductor and violinist. Piano by Leif Ove Andsnes Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin (7 June 1848 -- 8 May 1903) was a leading French Post-Impressionist artist who was not well appreciated until after his death. Gauguin was later recognized for his experimental use of colors and synthetist style that were distinguishably different from Impressionism. His work was influential to the French avant-garde and many modern artists, such as Pablo Picasso, and Henri Matisse. Gauguin's art became popular after his death and many of his paintings were in the possession of Russian collector Sergei Shchukin.[1] He was an important figure in the Symbolist movement as a painter, sculptor, print-maker, ceramist, and writer. His bold experimentation with coloring led directly to the Synthetist style of modern art, while his expression of the inherent meaning of the subjects in his paintings, under the influence of the cloisonnist style, paved the way to Primitivism and the return to the pastoral. He was also an influential proponent of wood engraving and woodcuts as art forms.

DaXun Zhang and Yang Wei give an amazing performance of Halvorsen's arrangement of Passacaglia! The last movement of George Frideric Handel Harpsichord Suite in G minor (HWV 432) is a passacaglia which has become well known as a duo for violin and viola, arranged by the Norwegian violinist Johan Halvorsen. The passacaglia is a musical form that originated in early seventeenth-century Spain and is still used today by composers. It is usually of a serious character and is often, but not always, based on a bass-ostinato and written in triple metre. ----------------------------------------------------- The text above is offered by courtesy of Wikipedia, under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License. http://www.compagnieparterre.fr Teaser 2015 bal.exe (nouvelle version) / Creation 2014 - 60 min Compagnie par Terre / Anne Nguyen Création actuellement en tournée. Production currently on tour. For her seventh creation, Anne Nguyen restages eight popping specialists. She takes the romantic and melancholic universe of chamber music with pieces by Brahms, Connesson, Halvorsen and Biber, performed on stage by five classical musicians, and transposes it into a robotic and almost informatic-style choreographic score, where events seem to arise from an arbitrary logic. Robotic dancers, dressed like sophisticated, off-beat, retro style models, act as if bewitched by the music, reaching out to interact with each other in a series of jerky, restrained and mechanical gestures. The wheels driving their emotions function so randomly that their decision-making powers gradually disappear; they are inhabited by a system that becomes increasingly deterministic and ordered. Engulfed by a universe where the emotions soar high above the music from which they emerge, the solitary bodies try desperately to gain control in their relationship with the other, causing the disruptive actions in this somnambulistic ball. Anne Nguyen revisits the art of social dancing, and creates a new “mechanical” hip-hop dance style performed in pairs, called “looping pop”. ► Chorégraphe : Anne Nguyen ► Danseurs : Sonia Bel Hadj Brahim, Pascal Luce, Claire Moineau, Blondy Mota-Kisoka, Sacha Négrevergne, Jessica Noita, Matthieu Pacquit, Rebecca Rheny ► Musiciens (plusieurs distributions possibles) : • Distribution n°1 : Juliette Adam - clarinette, Alexandre Pascal - violon, Boris Blanco - violon, Raphaël Jardin - alto, Alexis Derouin - violoncelle • Distribution n°2 : Juliette Adam - clarinette, Yaoré Talibart - violon, Clémence Mériaux - violon, Issey Nadaud - alto, Caroline Sypniewski - violoncelle ► Création lumière : Ydir Acef ► Création vidéo : Claudio Cavallari ► Avec des extraits du film « Paroles, paroles » de Ron Dyens (Sacrebleu Productions, 2002) ► Programme musical : • Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) - Quintette pour clarinette et cordes en si mineur op. 115 / clarinette, 2 violons, alto, violoncelle / 36 min env.
Born in Drammen, Norway he was an accomplished violinist from a very early age and became a prominent figure in Norwegian musical life. He received his musical education in Kristiania (now Oslo) and Stockholm, and was a concertmaster in Bergen before joining the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. He was a concertmaster in Aberdeen, Scotland, then a professor of music in Helsinki, and finally became a student once again, in St Petersburg, Leipzig (with Adolph Brodsky), Berlin (with Adolf Becker), and Liège (with César Thomson).
Returning to Norway in 1893, he worked as conductor of the theatre orchestra at Den Nationale Scene in Bergen and of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. He became concertmaster of the Bergen Philharmonic in 1885, and principal conductor in 1893. In 1899 he was appointed conductor of the orchestra at the newly-opened National Theatre in Kristiania, a position he held for 30 years until his retirement in 1929.
