What The Butler Saw (1950) Rare Hammer Film
This era of Hammer films is frustratingly under-representated on DVD. The films are out there amongst collectors, but few of them get shared unless money changes hands. So I thought I'd post this one up complete, in the hope that other fans might do the same with rare titles in their collections, and stop those who don't own the rights from making a fast buck. Of course, I don't own the rights either and will remove this video should the copyright holders request so, or if the film actually comes out on DVD. Okay - anyone out there care to post up 'Celia', 'Meet Simon Cherry', 'The Adventures Of PC49' etc.?

Remington-Rand Presents the Univac
UNIVAC is one of the earliest commercial computers and was easily the most famous computer of the 1950s. This film, produced between 1950 and 1952, shows how the UNIVAC computer was used in business, defense and by the census. The film shows several of the important portions of the UNIVAC system at work, including the high-speed printer, the UNISERVO tape drive, the UNITYPER, card readers and the mercury delay line tanks that served as main memory. The programming process is fully discussed and a business problem is demonstrated. These films served a promotional film as well as a way to demystify computers to the average person.

Journey by a London Bus (1950)
Very much beloved of Victor Lewis-Smith, this production by the Colonial Film Unit tells those finding themselves foreign, how to use London's bus service. Note to writers of American television programmes: this is exactly what life is still like in Britain, and you are quite correct to groundlessly assume that everyone still speaks in either a plummy BBC accent, or is a cockney urchin. And yes, the terms 'Britain', 'England' and 'London' all refer to exactly the same place.

Racism in America: Small Town 1950s Case Study Documentary Film
Racism in the United States has been a major issue since the colonial era and the slave era. Legally sanctioned racism imposed a heavy burden on Native Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, and Latin Americans. European Americans (particularly Anglo Americans) were privileged by law in matters of literacy, immigration, voting rights, citizenship, land acquisition, and criminal procedure over periods of time extending from the 17th century to the 1960s. Many non-Protestant European immigrant groups, particularly American Jews, Irish Americans, Italian Americans, as well as other immigrants from elsewhere, suffered xenophobic exclusion and other forms of discrimination in American society. Major racially structured institutions included slavery, Indian Wars, Native American reservations, segregation, residential schools (for Native Americans), and internment camps. Formal racial discrimination was largely banned in the mid-20th century, and came to be perceived as socially unacceptable and/or morally repugnant as well, yet racial politics remain a major phenomenon. Historical racism continues to be reflected in socio-economic inequality. Racial stratification continues to occur in employment, housing, education, lending, and government. The 20th century saw a hardening of institutionalized racism and legal discrimination against citizens of African descent in the United States. Although technically able to vote, poll taxes, acts of terror (often perpetuated by ...

"Premakes" The Empire Strikes Back (1950)
What if Star Wars was a 50s 3-D Movie? Let's turn back the clock, shall we? Back to a distant time in an alternate universe far, far away... The 50s! It was a simpler age of 3-D movies, and robots named Robby, Gort, and Tobor. A hidden gem of this period in cinema is a little film called "The Empire Strikes Back", the second chapter in a planned three-part epic science fiction trilogy. While the preceding and succeeding episodes were never actually produced due to budgetary constraints, "Empire" shines as an example of 1950s 3-D space opera. The re-release of this trailer coincides with the 60th anniversary of this amazing film. But, seriously folks... ever since I started cutting these premakes, I have had constant requests for a retro version of Star Wars. This is a little thank you gift for everyone who has been watching my work. Here is the recipe for the trailer: Flash Gordon (Deadline at Noon, Conquers the Universe), The Phantom Planet, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, Invasion of the Animal People, Man Beast, Lunar Walker, Golden Bat (Ogon Batto), The Mysterians, Captain Midnight, First Spaceship on Venus, The Flying Saucer, The Fighting Devil Dogs, The Outer Limits (Second Chance, Soldier, I Robot, The Sixth Finger), Things to Come, Space Patrol, Atragon, Terror in the Midnight Sun, Forbidden Planet, Rocketship XM, Latitude Zero, Space Flight, Metropolis, The Jetsons, Devil Girl From Mars, Tobor the Great, The Alligator People, The Return of the Fly, Abominable ...

More surprises. A reel labeled "Alameda 1958" happened to feature quite a few urban scenes set in San Francisco. This footage features only my grandfather; both behind and in front of the camera. Preceding this piece of film was a document of his travel there; aboard a Navy Aircraft. That will be posted soon.

Bad News - A Media Fiction (Diplom)
Is it possible that the exclamation of the end of the world is able to provoke the apocalypse?
We are inside an american printery for newspaper in the 1950s now. A freshly printed newspaper comes to the fore. The headline proclaims the end of the world and pushes us straight towards the reports of the financial crisis of nowadays at the same time. The illustration of a comet, which is running down to the earth, intensifies the impression of the approaching end.
The film asks the question which consequences could be caused by information and news.
With regard to the financial crisis, the metaphor is a kind of an exaggerated persiflage: only the message of the apocalypse causes the end of the world – a self-fulfilling prophecy caused by the media!
The layout of the newspaper changes during the film parallel to the dramatic of the story.
The first reaction releases a visual chaos which develops while the film continues. An information flood takes the audience by surprise. Letters, words, graphics, illustrations, photo collage – the whole design collapses like an avalanche and is getting rebuild in the form of the comet, which is made of terms and graphical material.

Bombay Beach - A film by ALMA HAR'EL
Music by BEIRUT and BOB DYLAN
WINNER of Tribeca Best doc 2011
From the Tribeca catalogue -
The rusting relic of a failed 1950s development boom, the Salton Sea is a barren Californian landscape often seen as a symbol of the failure of the American Dream.
A sea in the middle of the Colorado desert.
First-time director Alma Har'el visits this poetically fruitful terrain in her distinctive documentary Bombay Beach, and finds there a motley cast including a bipolar seven-year-old, a lovelorn high school football star, and an octogenarian poet-prophet. Together they make up a triptych of American manhood in its decisive moments, populating the Salton Sea's land of thwarted opportunity.
True to her roots as a photographer, video artist, and music video director, Har'el crafts here an adamantly atypical and artistically innovative film—a dreamlike poem that sets the personal stories of these distinctive yet familiar characters to a stylized amalgam of observational documentary and choreographed dance, with music by Beirut and Bob Dylan, all cast against the atmospheric scenery of the titular ghost town.
The result is a moving and surreal documentary experience—an evocative, symbolic portrait of rural America and its inhabitants. Winner of the Tribeca film festival doc competition.

ENTIRELY NEW FORMS OF LIGHTNING HAVE BEEN DISCOVERED UP TO 1000 TIMES BIGGER THAN ANY BOLT PREVIOUSLY SEEN. WHILE NORMAL LIGHTNING FIRES DOWN BELOW CLOUDS, THESE GIANT BOLTS SHOOT UP, STUNNING EXPERTS WITH IMAGES OF LIGHTNING 80 KILOMETRES HIGH.
THIS LIGHTNING, SIX TIMES MORE POWERFUL THAN PASSENGER PLANES ARE DESIGNED TO WITHSTAND, MAY BE THE REAL KILLER IN A SPATE OF BAFFLING AIR DISASTERS.

AND FOR THE FIRST TIME WE CAN REVEAL THE PHOTOGRAPH THAT SPARKED A SECRET NASA ENQUIRY.
WAS THIS THE PROOF THAT A HIGH ALTITUDE LIGHTNING STRIKE CAUSED THE CRASH OF THE SPACE SHUTTLE COLUMBIA?

NARRATOR:
EACH DAY, THE EARTH IS SHAKEN BY 8 MILLION BOLTS OF THE SKY'S MOST POWERFUL FORCE: LIGHTNING.
Bolt of lightning.
NARRATOR:
ENERGY FROM ONE BOLT EXPLODES IN SPLIT SECOND, BUT COULD POWER A HOUSEHOLD FOR HALF A YEAR. AT ANY TIME, 1800 STORMS PUMMEL OUR PLANET. EACH ONE IS A GIANT BATTERY. INSIDE A STORM, WATER TURNS TO HAIL. FAILLING ICE CRASHES ON RISING DROPLET, CREATING STATIC ELECTRICITY. CHARGES OF UP TO 100 MILLION VOLTS BUILD UP. ARCS OF ELECTRICITY FIRE OUT. THIS IS LIGHTNING. MORE THAN 90 PERCENT OF ALL BOLTS FIRE WITHIN CLOUDS. BUT A HIGHLY CHARGED STORM WILL FIRE A CASCADE OF ELECTRICAL CHARGE TO EARTH, DRAWN TO THE HIGHEST POINT. A TREE OR A BLADE OF GRASS CAN TRIGGER LIGHTNING, OR EVEN A PERSON. EACH YEAR, 100O PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD DIE FROM DIRECT HIT. A LIGHTNING BOLT IS ONLY 3 CM WIDE. BUT AT 33,000 DEGREES CELCIUS, IT IS HOTTER THAN THE SURFACE OF THE SUN.

THIS HEAT EXPANDS THE SURROUNDING AIR, WHICH EXPLODES OUTWARDS AS THUNDER, THE SOUND OF LIGHTNING.

Quicksand (1950) FULL MOVIE
www.zazzle.com Quicksand (1950) is a United Artists film noir starring Mickey Rooney and Peter Lorre in a story about a garage mechanic's descent into crime. The film has been described as "film noir in a teacup... a pretty nifty little picture" in which Rooney "cast himself against his Andy Hardy goody goody image." Rooney co-financed Quicksand with Peter Lorre but their shares of the profits were reportedly left unpaid by a third partner. Most of the film was shot on location in Santa Monica, California, with a few exterior scenes at Santa Monica Pier. Swing era bandleader Red Nichols and His Five Pennies are seen and heard in a nightclub scene. A display box of Bit-O-Honey candy shown by a cash register soon after the film begins is an early example of product placement. Bruce Eder of Allmovie wrote Rooney "...gives what many consider to be the best performance of his career" and characterized Quicksand as "one of the more fascinating social documents of its era." Directed by Irving Pichel; Produced by Mort Briskin/Samuel H. Stiefel; Written by Robert Smith Starring: Mickey Rooney; Jeanne Cagney; Barbara Bates; Peter Lorre

Dangerous Playground - Southern Pacific RailRoad 1950's - Educational Safety Film about Trains
This is an educational safety film released by the Southern Pacific Railroad in the 1950's showing the dangers that face unsuspecting children when they use the railroad property as a playground. Also shows other unacceptable behavious such as throwing rocks at trains or putting objects on the tracks, and their potential consequences including train derailment or personal injury. From a rail forum on "Altamont Press" I've learnt the sequence with the boy crossing the trestle was filmed on the NWP's Tiburon Branch (trestle over "Blackie's Pasture.") and the scenes of the PA with the kids and the engineer were filmed at SP's East Oakland yard. From en.wikipedia.org The Southern Pacific Transportation Company (reporting mark SP), earlier Southern Pacific Railroad (1865--1885) and Southern Pacific Company (1885--1969), and usually simply called the Southern Pacific or (from the railroad's initials) Espee, was an American railroad. The railroad was founded as a land holding company in 1865, later acquiring the Central Pacific Railroad by lease. By 1900, the Southern Pacific Company had grown into a major railroad system which incorporated many smaller companies, such as the Texas and New Orleans Railroad and Morgan's Louisiana and Texas Railroad, and which extended from New Orleans through Texas to El Paso, across New Mexico and through Tucson, to Los Angeles, throughout most of California including San Francisco and Sacramento; it also included the Central Pacific Railroad ...

1950s Housewife in LSD Experiment
From a television programme, circa 1956, about mental health issues. Dr Sidney Cohen, was dosing volunteers at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Los Angeles. Dr Cohen, seen sitting at a table and wearing a lounge suit - his legs crossed in the classic I'm-a-scientist pose - interviews the unidentified housewife, who is dressed in her best black frock. She tells the doctor: 'My husband is an employee here at the VA and he said they were looking for normal people, so I volunteered.' Dr Cohen asks: 'How do you feel about coming here and drinking this strange material?' She replies: 'A little nervous, perhaps.' In the unintentionally comical manner that seems to be the preserve of 1950s training films, the camera zooms in on an innocuous-looking glass of clear liquid on the table, as the good doctor says: 'Well, I think it's time for you to have your lycergic acid. Drink this down and we'll be back after a while and see how you're doing.' As the housewife obediently drains the glass and Dr Cohen smiles benevolently, a dramatic voice-over explains: 'This is a glass of water, colourless, tasteless. It contains 100 gamma of LSD 25. One tenth of a milligram, the equivalent of one 600th of a grain. 'An ounce of this material will make 150000 such doses. Let us observe the affect some three hours later.' Unsurprisingly, three hours later the housewife is insanely high. She says: 'Everything is in colour and I can feel the air. I can see it, I can see all the molecules - I'm ...
