Tim Key (born 2 September 1976 in Cambridgeshire^[1]) is an English actor, comedy writer, and performance poet. In 2009, he was the winner of the Edinburgh Comedy Award and was also nominated for the Malcolm Hardee Award for Comic Originality.^[2]

Early Life[link]

Tim Key was educated at Sheffield University, where he studied Russian. Following graduation he returned to his native Cambridge where he eventually joined the Cambridge Footlights. Although Key himself did not attend Cambridge University, his older brother did.

Edinburgh Fringe[link]

Key was first noticed in the stage production Far Too Happy with the Cambridge Footlights (although not attending Cambridge University itself) which was a sell out at the Edinburgh Fringe and was nominated for a Perrier Award for Best Newcomer. This show also featured comedian Mark Watson and actress Sophie Winkleman.

In 2003, Key returned to Edinburgh directing (with Mark Watson) a sketch show - "Non-Sexual Kissing"; and performing in Alex Horne's "Making Fish Laugh". The latter was nominated for a Perrier Best Newcomer Award.

In 2004, Key took "Luke & Stella" to Edinburgh. This was a tragic one-man comedy play about a div-boy called Luke who has all sorts of problems one evening. He also performed in Alex Horne's Every Body Talks and Mark Watson's 24 hour show.

In 2005, Key took the four-man sketch group Cowards to Edinburgh.^[3] Key also performed in Alex Horne's When In Rome and Mark Watson's 2005 minute show.

In 2006, Cowards returned to Edinburgh and Key performed in Mark Watson's 36 hour show.

In 2007, Key took his first solo poetry show to Edinburgh. It was called The Slut in the Hut and sold out. In this year We Need Answers also debuted. Key was question master in a debauched quiz to find the smartest comedian. Mark Watson and Alex Horne made up a trio of hosts who ultimately crowned Paul Sinha the first winner of this show. He also starred in Mark Watson's 24 hour jamboree.

In 2008, Key performed Freeze in Edinburgh. Freeze is a two-hander with Tom Basden. There was also a run of We Need Answers. Josie Long defeated Kristen Schaal to lift the title.

In 2009, Key took his second solo poetry show to Edinburgh, entitled The Slutcracker. It featured what some have described as "deliberately bad poetry", some of which is about zebras. Key has subsequently stated that his poetry is not "deliberately" bad. The show also incorporated subtle references to cooking, and several short films in which Key variously appears as a bearded woman, a bearded man, and an office worker overseeing the slaughter of an eel. The show won the 2009 Edinburgh Comedy Award.^[4] He additionally starred in a comic play Party, written by Tom Basden, also featuring Jonny Sweet, Anna Crilly, Katy Wix and Nick Mohammed. He also featured in Mark Watson's final 24 hour show.

In 2010, Key brought The Slutcracker to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

In 2011, Key returned to Edinburgh to complete his slutty trilogy with a new show, Masterslut, at the Pleasance Dome. He was also one of the contestants in Taskmaster II, in which Alex Horne challenged comedians to complete numerous tasks for points. Key placed third.

Radio & television[link]

In 2005, Key was commissioned to write a radio show for BBC Radio 4 based on his stage show Luke & Stella. The show's name changed to All Bar Luke and was produced by Seb Barwell for Angel Eye. Series 1 aired in 2006, series 2 aired in 2007. The third series aired for the first time in Summer 2008. A Christmas special was broadcast in Christmas 2009.

In 2006, Key worked on Time Trumpet, Armando Iannucci's inventive sketch show set in thirty years time and reflecting on the present and the future. Key took the part of an EastEnders special effects supervisor. He worked with Iannucci again on a pilot, Shush, by Rebecca Front, Morwenna Banks and Arthur Mathews.

There have also been two series of Cowards on BBC Radio 4, produced by Victoria Lloyd. The first series aired in April 2007, and series two was broadcast in 2008. Both have since been released on CD by BBC Worldwide. In 2009 Cowards transferred to BBC Four. directed by Steve Bendelack, and produced by Seb Barwell.

Key was also resident poet on Out To Lunch on BBC Radio 2 in 2007.

In 2007, Key appeared on Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe, reading a poem about Deal Or No Deal and again in November 2008, reading other poems about the Russell Brand/Jonathan Ross media spectacle, and children's TV advertising.

In 2008 and 2009, Key was resident poet on the radio show Mark Watson Makes the World Substantially Better hosted by Mark Watson, on BBC Radio 4, each week reading a poem about human virtues. In series one of the show, Tim Minchin provided music and songs, with Tom Basden taking the role in series two.

In 2009, Key also co-created We Need Answers, a panel show pitting two celebs against each other, for BBC Four. Mark Watson and Alex Horne made the show with Key and celebs answering questions included Germaine Greer, Michael Rosen, Neil Innes and Robert Llewellyn.

In 2009, Key appeared on the spin-off television series Charlie Brooker's Newswipe, reading poems in a section named "The Topical Poetry of Tim Key". He returned with his poetry in the second series of Newswipe in 2010.

In 2010 Key appeared as Duncan in Tom Basden's BBC Radio 4 sitcom Party.^[5]

In November 2010 Key appeared alongside Steve Coogan on “”Mid Morning Matters, a new online series based on his Alan Partridge character.

In 2010 he appeared on the music panel show Never Mind the Buzzcocks.

In 2011 he appeared as a TV interviewer in episode 2 of the sitcom Life's Too Short.

Also in 2011, he returned to BBC Radio 4 with Mark Watson and Tom Basden, for a six-week, live variation on Mark Watson Makes the World Substantially Better entitled Mark Watson's Live Address To The Nation. Key and Basden again contributed poetry, music and general interjections, and assisted Watson in carrying out various challenges at the end of the show as decided by the listeners.

In 2012 he reunited with Tom Basden for Tim Key's Late Night Poetry Programme on BBC Radio 4; a six-week run of 15 minute segments featuring Tim Key reading poetry with Tom Basden providing musical accompaniment, intercut with witty banter between the two comedians. The programme started on 22 February and ran until 28 March 2012. Topics included Family, Death, Chance, Superstition, Egypt and Work.

Also in 2012, he made a short cameo appearance as a hospital doctor in the Series Six of the E4 show Skins (TV Series).

Key's short film The One and Only Herb McGwyer Plays Wallis Island', which he wrote and performed in with Tom Basden, won Best UK Short at the 2007 Edinburgh Film Festival. It was nominated for a 2008 BAFTA in the category of Best Short Film, but lost to Dog Altogether by Diarmid Scrimshaw, and one of Tim's biggest heroes, Paddy Considine.

Key has made two other short films with Tom Basden, Piano For Beginners in 2004, and The Amazing Hedge Puzzle in 2005, both of which were directed by Alex Winckler and produced by J Van Tulleken.

Key and J Van Tulleken are currently filming some of his poetry, in the form of 1 to 2 minute ostentatiously arty black and white films with the poems narrated over. Rebecca Hall, Kristen Schaal, Tom Basden, and Khalid Abdalla, among others have appeared in these films, alongside Key.

Robert "Bo" Burnham (born August 21, 1990 (1990-08-21))^[4][5] is an American comedian, singer-songwriter, musician, actor, and Internet celebrity. Writing comedic and satirical songs with a politically incorrect slant, he achieved fame when his YouTube videos took off and received more than 70 million views by October 2010.^[2] Comedy Central Records released his first EP (Bo Fo Sho, June 2008) and his first two full-length albums (Bo Burnham in March 2009 and Words Words Words in October 2010). On January 29, 2011, it was announced that Burnham finished #1 overall in voting in 2011's Comedy Central Stand-up Showdown.^[6]

Personal life[link]

Bo Burnham was born the youngest of three on August 21, 1990 to Patricia and Scott Burnham.^[1][7]

In February 2008, Patricia was a staff nurse at Burnham's school, and Scott owned a North Shore, Massachusetts construction company. Their two older children, Pete and Samm, were concurrently enrolled in their third and second years at Cornell University and Suffolk Law School, respectively.^[1]

Burnham attended the all-boys' Catholic high school, St. John's Preparatory School in Danvers, Massachusetts, where he was on the school honor roll and was involved in theatre and the campus ministry program. The school's assistant principal, Wendy Olson, remarked in a February 2008 interview that while "[t]he Bo on YouTube is not the Bo we see around here, [...] no one at St. John's is surprised at his creativity or that he's pursuing his dream, which is to make a name for himself." Burnham graduated from St. John's in Spring 2008.^[1][7]

Burnham applied to New York University (NYU), University of Southern California (USC), and Yale University,^[1] and was accepted to NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.^[8] Although expected to begin attending in Autumn 2008,^[9] he deferred his enrollment for a year to focus on his burgeoning media career.^[4][10] Burnham later related that his first year on tour while friends had gone to college made him "[want] to fucking die. I'd be on the road, in South Dakota, looking on Facebook at all my friends at parties."^[11]

As of August 2010^[update], Burnham was reported to be dating a girl from "a nearby suburban town".^[12] Subsequently, in an interview conducted at the 2011 Cat Laughs Comedy Festival in Kilkenny, Burnham revealed that he has a "girlfriend of five years".^[13]

Home-grown music[link]

Burnham was performing skits ("Bo Shows") in his home by age three, and grew up listening to boomer-generation comedians like George Carlin and Richard Pryor.^[1]

As detailed by Burnham himself, 2006 was the beginning of what would become his musical comedy career. Rehearsing a play at St. John's that summer, Burnham began writing songs about teenage angst and debuting them to his fellow high school thespians. He then videotaped himself performing two songs and posted them to the video-sharing website YouTube in December 2006,^[9] so that his older brother Pete could watch them from college. While response to his videos on YouTube ("My Whole Family... " and "My 'little' secret...") was initially unexceptional, when they were copied to Break.com they became an overnight sensation, with traffic to his videos multiplying over 111 times.^[1]

Accompanying himself on guitar or electric piano, Burnham continued to release self-described "pubescent musical comedy"^[9] songs and videos online as his fame and recognition grew. Described by The Boston Globe's Joseph P. Kahn as "simultaneously wholesome and disturbing, intimate in a folksy-creepy sort of way," Burnham wrote and released R-rated songs about white supremacy, Helen Keller's disabilities, homosexuality, and more.^[1] All of Burnham's home-released videos were self-recorded in and around his family's home in Hamilton, Massachusetts, most in his bedroom. Occasionally jokingly addressing his audience in his videos, ("Hello, Internet pedophiles,") Burnham rarely changes expression or camera angle while performing—simply setting the video camera on a stack of books.^[1][7] Speaking with The A.V. Club in 2009, Burnham expressed his intent to give his productions a "do-it-yourself [feel], almost like voyeurism".^[14]

In Autumn 2007, Douglas Edley, a talent agent from The Gersh Agency,^[15] had Burnham recommended to him by his assistant. The next day Edley called Burnham and told him: "I gotta represent you." Said Edley in a February 2008 telephone interview: "He's definitely the youngest comedian I've worked with - he was getting ready for his SATs when I called - but the quality of his writing is amazing."^[1] It was this call from Edley—whom Burnham had initially thought to be "a very advanced Internet predator"—that was Burnham's wake-up call as to his potential professional success.^[10] In addition to Burnham, Edley also represents several top-tier comedians, including Drew Carey and Dave Chappelle.^[1]

Represented by Douglas Edley, Burnham recorded a performance in London for Comedy Central's The World Stands Up in January 2008 (aired June 30, 2008 (2008-06-30)),^[1][15] and signed a four-record deal with Comedy Central Records.^[16] Comedy Central Records released Burnham's first EP, the six-song Bo Fo Sho, as an online release-only album on June 17, 2008 (2008-06-17).^[8][9] Burnham's first full album, the self-titled Bo Burnham, was released by Comedy Central Records on March 10, 2009 (2009-03-10).^[17]

Burnham has performed his music in the United States, including Cobb's Comedy Club, YouTube Live in San Francisco,^[10] Caroline's Comedy Club in New York City,^[8] and internationally in London and Montreal. In August 2010, Burnham was nominated for "Best Comedy Show" at the 2010 Edinburgh Comedy Awards—"the world’s most prestigious comedy prize" with a £10,000 cash prize—after his inaugural performance (of Bo Burnham: Words, Words, Words) at the 2010 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.^[18] He was instead awarded the "Panel Prize"—carrying a £5,000 prize—for "the show or act who has most captured the comedy spirit of the 2010 Fringe." ^[19][20]

Compared to Ben Folds, Eminem, and Andrew Dice Clay, Burnham's music and performances tackle such taboo subjects as race, gender, human sexuality, and sex.^[21] Burnham describes his on-stage persona as a "more arrogant, stuck-up version [of] himself."^[22] When speaking with The Detroit News about his rapping, he expressed his intent to honor and respect the perspective and culture of hip-hop music.^[2]

As Burnham progressed through his initial popularity to more mainstream audiences and venues, he received pushback from fellow comics who viewed his ascension via YouTube popularity as illegitimate.^[11]

Burnham's first experience with controversy regarding his music came on March 3, 2009 (2009-03-03), when fifteen Westminster College students (members of the campus' Gay-Straight Alliance, Black Students Association, International Club, and Cultural Diversity Organization) protested his concert there that evening. Of the controversy, he said, "It's so ironic because gay bashers were the ones labeling me in high school, [...] I try and write satire that’s well-intentioned. But those intentions have to be hidden. It can't be completely clear and that’s what makes it comedy." The Columbia Daily Tribune related that at the end of his Westminster performance, Burnham was approached by a paraplegic fan. While Burnham was plainly uncomfortable and nervous, given that his music mocks the handicapped, the young fan instead related a blonde joke to the teenaged musician. Despite the college's admission that they had booked Burnham while ignorant of his content, dean of students John Comerford praised the opportunities for discourse the controversy brought the school.^[21][23]

While performing at the Montreal Just for Laughs festival in 2008,^[8] Burnham met with the award-winning director and producer Judd Apatow. That September, Burnham negotiated with Universal Pictures to write and create the music for an Apatow-produced comedy film which he describes as the "anti-High School Musical",^[7][28] although Burnham insists the script isn't a parody of the Disney musicals, but an attempt to emulate the high school he attended. Hoping to star in the film he's writing, Burnham told Wired magazine that he's naming the star "Bo" in a "not-so-subtle hint [he] want[s] to be in it".^[29] In a March 2009 (2009-03) interview with Boston's Weekly Dig, Burnham elaborated on his work with the film. When he isn't performing, Burnham spends eight hours a day writing the music, and his nights writing the script, of which he's finished the first draft.^[30] Co-writing the screenplay with Burnham is his high school friend Luke Liacos.^[12] Burnham explained the script-writing opportunity is a boon to his comedy career, as the comedian had been having complications with censors and learning that his material wasn't well-suited to television. "It would work much better in a 90-minute format."^[29] In August 2010, Burnham told The Guardian that his script had been submitted.^[11] In an October 2010 interview with MTV, Burnham admitted that he doesn't know anything about the future of the project, and that it's all effectively up in the air as far as he knew.^[31]

In May 2009 (2009-05), viral marketing began appearing for Funny People, in which Burnham stars in a NBC sitcom called Yo Teach!. In the "promo", Burnham stars opposite Jason Schwartzman, as a student in the latter's English class.^[32]

On May 21, 2010, Burnham taped his first one-hour stand-up special entitled Words Words Words for Comedy Central from the House of Blues in Boston as part of the network's new "House of Comedy" series of stand-up specials.^[33][34] The special aired on Comedy Central on October 16, 2010. Simon Marc Amstell (born 29 November 1979 in Gants Hill, London) is a BAFTA-nominated,^[2] award-winning English comedian, television presenter, screenwriter and actor, best known for his roles as former co-host of Popworld, former host of Never Mind the Buzzcocks and co-writer and star of the sitcom Grandma's House.

Early life[link]

Amstell was born in east London in 1979 and was raised in Gants Hill, London, in a Jewish family. He was educated at Beal High School, a state comprehensive school in Ilford, London. When he appeared on Family Catchphrase, his aunt Kim mentioned that he was the eldest of four siblings.

Life and career[link]

Amstell's first television appearance was in 1993 when he appeared as a contestant on the Channel 4 game show GamesMaster.^[3][4][5] He also appeared on Good Morning with Anne and Nick performing an impression of Dame Edna Everage,^[6]. In 1994, he appeared in an episode of Family Catchphrase, describing himself as a budding magician and showing one of his tricks to the show's presenter Andrew O'Connor, himself a magician.^[7][8][9] Amstell and his family won a television and a video recorder.

Amstell started performing on the comedy circuit when he was in his early teens and later became the youngest finalist to appear in the BBC New Comedy Awards. His first professional television appearance was in 1998 as a presenter on the UK children's channel Nickelodeon. He claims he was sacked for being "sarcastic and mean to children"^[10] although the potted biography on his website also, in jest, claims:

"He started his TV career at Nickoledeon where he was fired for making pop stars uncomfortable. He then began presenting the Channel 4 show, Popworld – where he gained a huge following for his groundbreaking work in making pop stars uncomfortable."^[11]

From 2000 to 2006, Amstell presented Popworld on Channel 4 with Miquita Oliver. He voiced the characters "Timothy the Popworld melon" and "Richard the Popworld horse" and developed a highly ironic, surreal and left-field style which gained the show a cult following but angered many of its guests. One example was a mock interview with singer Lemar called "Lemar From Afar" in which Amstell shouted questions into a megaphone from one end of the world's largest car park while Lemar stood at the other end. Another was a "Si-chiatrist" interview with Luke Pritchard and Hugh Harris of The Kooks in which Amstell played the role of psychiatrist and Pritchard and Harris his patients. During his time presenting Popworld, Amstell was at the centre of several controversies, including making Britney Spears cry after asking her if she thought she'd "gone a bit nuts".^[15]

Amstell first appeared on the comedy pop quiz show Never Mind the Buzzcocks as a guest during Mark Lamarr's tenure as host, in 2003 and 2005. Following Lamarr's departure, he was one of the series' guest hosts before being appointed as permanent host beginning in October 2006. He said at the time that he hoped to beat "the universal, exceptionless rule that when a new host takes over an old show it is a horrible, embarrassing disaster".^[16]

In June 2007, Amstell and long-term collaborator Dan Swimer wrote Imagine... A Mildly Amusing Panel Show, a spoof version of Alan Yentob's arts programme Imagine. Yentob and Amstell play themselves in a mock interview between what a number of commentators described as "overtly sexual"^{[citation needed]} clips taken from Amstell's Never Mind the Buzzcocks episodes. It was followed in February 2008 by Never Mind the Buzzcocks: A Moving Tribute, which jokingly implied that Amstell had either died or retired from the show.

On 25 April 2009, Amstell announced via his internet mailing list that he would not be hosting another series of Never Mind the Buzzcocks because of his desire to instead concentrate on his live tours and stand-up performances.^[17]

Amstell won several awards for his work on Never Mind the Buzzcocks. In March 2007, he won the 2006 Royal Television Society Award for Best Entertainment Performance.^[18] In December 2007, he won two British Comedy Awards for Best Comedy Entertainment Personality and Best Comedy Entertainment Series for Never Mind the Buzzcocks. In addition, Never Mind the Buzzcocks won the Best Entertainment Programme^[19] award at the Broadcast Awards 2008. Amstell's era was the reason why Never Mind the Buzzcocks was chosen as the 36th-best TV show of the decade by The Times.^[20]

Writing and acting[link]

Amstell co-wrote an episode of Channel 4 teen drama Skins in 2007, entitled "Maxxie and Anwar".

In 2009, BBC2 commissioned a six-part series entitled Grandma's House from Tiger Aspect Productions, written by and starring Amstell, co-written by Dan Swimer. The show was commissioned after the airing of a pilot earlier the same year. Filming started in February 2010^[21] and broadcasting began in August 2010.

In 2011, Amstell appeared in the independent film Black Pond.^[22]

In April 2012, the second series of Grandma's House began airing.

Stand-up[link]

Amstell also performs as a stand-up comedian. He has performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009. He has also appeared at the Carling Festivals in the Cabaret and Comedy Tent for the last two years. In 2008, Amstell completed his first UK tour. He appeared at the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal in July 2009. His entire run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2009 at the Bongo Club sold out. He took part in his second national tour in the autumn of 2009.^[23]

Amstell performed Do Nothing in 2009 at the Royal Court Theatre, raising money for their young writers programme.

In May 2010, Amstell recorded Do Nothing in Dublin's Vicar Street venue for a November DVD release. In December 2011 and April 2012, it was shown on BBC3 and the BBC iPlayer.^[24]

In April 2012, Amstell will be performing at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. From May to June 2012, he will be touring the UK. Amstell is calling the tour Numb.
