The AFP news agency is reporting that a judge in the southern city of Mthatha has ordered Mandela's eldest grandson, Mandla, to transfer the remains by 3pm local time on Wednesday. The ruling brings to an end a bitter family feud, carried out while the former South African leader lies in a critical condition in hospital. Mandla allegedly had the three graves moved in 2011 from Qunu, the village where Mandela grew up, to Mvezo, 30 kilometres away. The three graves are those of Nelson Mandela's eldest son and Mandla's father, Makgato Mandela who died in 2005; Mandela's first daughter Makaziwe, who died as an infant in 1948; and Mandela's second son Madiba Thembekile, who died in a car accident in 1969. The three graves are those of Nelson Mandela's eldest son and Mandla's father, Makgato Mandela who died in 2005; Mandela's first daughter Makaziwe, who died as an infant in 1948; and Mandela's second son Madiba Thembekile, who died in a car accident in 1969. http://www.democracynow.org - The whistleblowing website WikiLeaks is reportedly playing a central role in helping National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden leave Hong Kong and apply for political asylum in Ecuador. A Wikileaks activist named Sarah Harrison reportedly accompanied Snowden on his flight from Hong Kong to Moscow. In an interview with the New York Times, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who was granted political asylum by Ecuador last year, said: "Mr. Snowden requested our expertise and assistance. We've been involved in very similar legal and diplomatic and geopolitical struggles to preserve the organization and its ability to publish." Michael Ratner, an attorney for Julian Assange and WikiLeaks, praises Ecuador, for standing up to the United States. "They're trying to bully other countries, not only by pulling his passport away so that he can't travel, but by saying, 'Send him back to us. Don't take him in, there'll be consequences,'" Ratner says. "But none of those are legal. They're all just a big country beating up on small countries, and to the extent -- or other countries that they just want to intimidate, whether it's China or Russia or whatever. But the real point here is, that some countries are willing to stand up to the United States right now. Ecuador seems to be one of them." Full Interview Released on June 9, 2013 - The 29-year-old source behind the biggest intelligence leak in the NSA's history explains his motives, his uncertain future and why he never intended on hiding in the shadows. The individual responsible for one of the most significant leaks in US political history is Edward Snowden, a 29-year-old former technical assistant for the CIA and current employee of the defence contractor Booz Allen Hamilton. Snowden has been working at the National Security Agency for the last four years as an employee of various outside contractors, including Booz Allen and Dell. The Guardian, after several days of interviews, is revealing his identity at his request. From the moment he decided to disclose numerous top-secret documents to the public, he was determined not to opt for the protection of anonymity. "I have no intention of hiding who I am because I know I have done nothing wrong," he said. Snowden will go down in history as one of America's most consequential whistleblowers, alongside Daniel Ellsberg and Bradley Manning. He is responsible for handing over material from one of the world's most secretive organisations -- the NSA. READ MORE: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/...

July 1, 2013 - Breaking News Update: YARNELL, Ariz. (AP) -- Gusty, hot winds blew an Arizona blaze out of control Sunday in a forest northwest of Phoenix, overtaking and killing 19 members of an elite fire crew in the deadliest wildfire involving firefighters in the U.S. for at least 30 years. The "hotshot" firefighters were forced to deploy their emergency fire shelters - tent-like structures meant to shield firefighters from flames and heat - when they were caught near the central Arizona town of Yarnell, state forestry spokesman Art Morrison told The Associated Press. The flames lit up the night sky in the forest above the town, and smoke from the blaze could be smelled for miles. The fire started after a lightning strike on Friday and spread to 2,000 acres on Sunday amid triple-digit temperatures, low humidity and windy conditions. Officials ordered the evacuations of 50 homes in several communities, and later Sunday afternoon, the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office expanded the order to include more residents in Yarnell, a town of about 700 residents about 85 miles northwest of Phoenix. Prescott Fire Chief Dan Fraijo said that the 19 firefighters were a part of the city's fire department. "We grieve for the family. We grieve for the department. We grieve for the city," he said at a news conference Sunday evening. "We're devastated. We just lost 19 of the finest people you'll ever meet." Hot shot crews are elite firefighters who often hike for miles into the wilderness with chain saws and backpacks filled with heavy gear to build lines of protection between people and fires. They remove brush, trees and anything that might burn in the direction of homes and cities. The crew killed in the blaze had worked other wildfires in recent weeks in New Mexico and Arizona, Fraijo said. "By the time they got there, it was moving very quickly," Fraijo told the AP of Sunday's fire. He added that the firefighters had to deploy the emergency shelters when "something drastic" occurred. "One of the last fail safe methods that a firefighter can do under those conditions is literally to dig as much as they can down and cover themselves with a protective - kinda looks like a foil type - fire-resistant material - with the desire, the hope at least, is that the fire will burn over the top of them and they can survive it," Fraijo said. "Under certain conditions there's usually only sometimes a 50 percent chance that they survive," he said. "It's an extreme measure that's taken under the absolute worst conditions." The National Fire Protection Association had previously listed the deadliest wildland fire involving firefighters as the 1994 Storm King Fire near Glenwood Springs, Colo., which killed 14 firefighters who were overtaken by a sudden explosion of flames. U.S. wildfire disasters date back more than two centuries and include tragedies like the 1949 Mann Gulch fire near Helena, Mont., that killed 13, or the Rattlesnake blaze four years later that claimed 15 firefighters in Southern California. "This is as dark a day as I can remember," Gov. Jan Brewer said in a statement. "It may be days or longer before an investigation reveals how this tragedy occurred, but the essence we already know in our hearts: fighting fires is dangerous work." Morrison said several homes in the community of Glenisle burned on Sunday. He said no other injuries or deaths have been reported from that area. About 200 firefighters are fighting the wildfire, which has also forced the closure of parts of state Route 89. An additional 130 firefighters and more water- and retardant-dropping helicopters and aircraft are on their way. Federal help was also being called into to help, Arizona State Forestry Division spokesman Mike Reichling said. The Red Cross has opened two shelters in the area - at Yavapai College in Prescott and at the Wickenburg High School gym. Prescott, which is more than 30 miles northeast of Yarnell, is one of the only cities in the United States that has a hot shot fire crew, Fraijo said. The unit was established in 2002, and the city also has 75 suppression team members. U.S. Rep. Paul Gosar, whose district includes Yarnell, shot off a series of tweets Sunday night sending his condolences to those affected. He said his office will remain in contact with emergency responders and would offer help to those who needed it. Other high profile Arizonans expressed their shock on Twitter, including former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords who called it "absolutely devastating news." U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., tweeted that he was "sick with the news."

Ex Ruler Of Chad Hissene Habre Arrested In Senegal
Ex Ruler Of Chad Hissene Habre Arrested In Senegal

  • Updated: 30 Jun 2013
Hissene Habre, the former ruler of Chad, has been arrested in Senegal ahead of his trial there over alleged political killngs and torture during his time in power. Habre had been living in exile in Senegal for the last 22 years. Habre, who led Chad between 1982 and 1990, will be tried in a special court set up this year by Senegalese authorities in agreement with the African Union. The case against Habre follows years of procrastinating by Senegal under former president Abdoulaye Wade. It will be first time the former leader of an African state has been tried by another. "He was arrested this morning and placed in police custody after a request by the prosecutor," said Marcel Mendy, the court's spokesman on Sunday. Mendy did not give any further details on the arrest. Habre is not actually expected to appear at the court before early 2015 as investigations by the court's prosecutors are ongoing. Local media published photos of Habre, in traditional white flowing robes, being led away by security forces from his mansion in the capital, Dakar. Habre's lawyers called the arrest a "kidnapping" and demanded his immediate release. But rights groups welcomed the move. "The wheels of justice are turning", said Reed Brody, counsel for Human Rights Watch who has worked with Habre's victims since 1999. "After 22 years, Habre's victims can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel." Visiting Senegal on Thursday, US President Barack Obama highlighted Senegal as an example in Africa for the independence of its judiciary.
