Shenzhou 9 mission [Orbiter]
Shenzhou 9 was China's first human spaceflight mission to dock to China's first space station, Tiangong-1. It launched on a Long March 2F rocket from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center on June 16, 2012, automatically docked to the station on June 18, undocked and manually redocked on the 24th (not shown in this video), and landed on June 29.

VIDEO: THE LIFE OF A CHINESE ASTRONAUT
Special Report: Shenzhou 9 's Docking Mission with Tiangong 1
For ordinary people, life in space is little more than a daydream. Even among astronauts, only the strongest and luckiest get a shot. But right now Jing Haipeng, Liu Wang and Liu Yang are living that dream.
After entering the Tiangong-1 space module, the first task for the astronauts is to confirm the environment is habitable.
Shi Yong, Director of Aerospace Department says, "Parameters to be checked include pressure, oxygen concentration, temperature, and humidity."
Next, they need to confirm that all the equipment in the Tiangong-1 is in good shape.
"Before the astronauts go in, the space module will have been checked by the ground control center. Then the astronauts will transfer some of their experimental goods into the Tiangong."
Once the two spacecraft finish docking, Tiangong-1 will take control of the flight. That frees up the astronauts for their real work.
Chief commander of Shenzhou-9 He Yu says, "They will conduct space experiments and medical ones, including observing human reflexes and reactions in space, and culturing biological samples "
All these tasks require astronauts healthy condition. But space presents unique challenges to the human body - and that will require the space men and women to exercise.
Chief designer of Shenzhou-9 Zhang Bonan says, "They need to prevent calcium loss caused by living in microgravity."
It turns out exercise in space is not all that different from here on earth.
Former Tiangong-1 technology chief Yang Hong says, "It's like a unicycle. Astronauts use it to work on their lower body strength."
The astronauts will also be given foot massages for therapeutic reasons. It's hoped that together these experiments will help further our understanding of how the human body reacts to the conditions in space.
On June 24, 2012 - Shenzhou-9 mission is to conduct a manual docking test with the orbiting space lab module Tiangong-1. Thanks for watching!

Chinese astronauts on a busy space schedule
How does it feel to ride an exercise bike in space?..China's first female astronaut, Liu Yang, gives us her answer.
Having successfully launched and docked, astronauts on board China's Tiangong-1 space lab began their scientific experiments on Wednesday.
Top of the list is learning about how weightlessness affects the body and keeping fit in space.
Chen Shanguang, Director, Astronaut centre of China: "With nothing to weigh the human body down, muscle mass quickly degenerates in orbit. This means astronauts need to keep moving in other ways. This mission will primarily focus on medical experiments with later missions likely to research other aspects of space travel. Apart from the exercise bike, we have other kinds of equipment to protect the astronauts from the effects of weightlessness and to maintain their cardio and muscular functions."
The first raft of experiments kept Liu Yang very busy, it's her first night shift in outer space..
But all work and no play make for a dull astronaut..so apart from checking all the equipment and sending data back to the control centre, Liu Yang took some time out during night duty to play Rubic's cube and clean up the space lab.
And Liu Yang wasn't the only one to have a sleepless night, control centre staff and engineers on the ground were on duty to provide support.
Over a period of up to 10 days, the crew will perform a variety of tasks designed to get them used to life in space. Their work will prepare the way for China to eventually build a full scale, permanently manned space station.

VIDEO: MEDICAL EXPERIMENTS TO BE PERFORMED ON SPACE LAB
A number of medical experiments will be carried out in China's space lab. These will constitute the country's first systematic and comprehensive medical experiments in space.
The Tiangong 1 space lab's space and long run in orbital flight make it an ideal platform to carry out space-based medical experiments. State of the art equipment will help researchers on the ground monitor astronauts' health, test protective measures and carry out other research.
Chief commander of Manned Space Engineering Program Chen Shangguang says, "We have planned-out many experiments - especially ones related to medicine in space. One will focus on human physiology, including brain function and cognition, which can change under zero gravity."
But the mission is not just looking to find out how physiological features change in space, but why.
Deputy chief commander of Manned Space Engineering Program Li Yinghui says, "We have set up an experiment to study how cells are subject to gravity in a weightless environment. That's aimed at explaining muscle atrophy and bone loss under such conditions. By getting to know its nature, we can take careful measures to protect astronauts."
Researchers say the results of these experiments will offer invaluable experiences and data on protecting astronaut health and designing future programs.

6/24/2012 China's Shenzhou 9's manual docking with Tiangong 1
BEIJING -- A Chinese spacecraft carrying three astronauts docked manually with an orbiting module on Sunday, a first for the country as it strives to match American and Russian exploits in space.
The Shenzhou 9 capsule's maneuver with the Tiangong 1 module was shown live on national television. It follows a docking last week that was carried out by remote control from a ground base in China.
The Chinese astronauts have been living and working in the module for the past week as part of preparations for manning a permanent space station. They returned to the Shenzhou 9 capsule early Sunday and disconnected in preparation for the manual reconnection.
Wu Ping, spokeswoman for China's manned space program, told reporters in Beijing that hand levers were used to control Shenzhou 9 and position it to dock with the orbiting module. The maneuver was "precise and perfect" and the three astronauts carried it out "calmly and skillfully," Wu said.
"This success in manual docking represents a major breakthrough in our space rendezvous and docking technologies," Wu said.
China's next goals include another manned mission to the module later this year and replacing Tiangong 1, which was launched last year, with a permanent space station around 2020. Possible future missions could also include sending a man to the moon.
China's permanent space station is to weigh about 60 tons, slightly smaller than NASA's Skylab of the 1970s and about one-sixth the size of the 16-nation International Space Station.
The Shenzhou 9 crew includes 33-year-old Liu Yang, an air force pilot and China's first female space traveler. Liu is joined by mission commander and veteran astronaut Jing Haipeng, 45, and crew mate Liu Wang, 43.
Their mission, which is expected to last at least 10 days, is China's fourth manned mission. Shenzhou 9 launched June 16 from the Jiuquan center on the edge of the Gobi desert in northern China.
