Nic Jones - Ten Thousand Miles - live at the QEH (28 May 2011)
Yes, that really is Nic singing solo, on stage, for the first time since 1981. Accompanied by his son Joe, as part of the In Search Of Nic Jones concert at London's Southbank.
The concert was originally conceived for and performed at Sidmouth FolkWeek in 2010. Nic sang with his old group Bandoggs at that concert, but saved this solo surprise for the London show, which was staged as part of Stewart Lee's Austerity Binge.

Advice on playing Canadee-i-o by Nic Jones.
This video -- in conjunction with the video in which I perform the song here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0wZBWsvLOI&feature;=related -- is intended to shed light on Nic Jones' arrangement of Canadee-i-o, and is something I've chosen to post online as a guitar teacher as well as a Nic Jones enthusiast.
In contrast, as an artist I perform my own material as well as my own versions of traditional songs. As such, I don't play Nic's arrangements at my own gigs. You can find videos of many of my own songs among my uploaded videos.

Nic Jones - Little Musgrave
'Little Musgrave' from Nic Jones' album 'Ballads and Songs', released in 1970.
Little Musgrave is an old English folk ballad, dating back to at least the 17th century. Nic wrote in the album notes: "Musgrave's tune is more a creation of my own than anything else, although the bulk of it is based on an American variant of the same ballad, entitled, Little Matty Groves." It is also part of the Child Ballads. It is sometimes titled "Little Musgrave and Lady Barnard".
----------------------------------------
Lyrics:
As it fell out upon a day
As many in the year
Musgrave to the church did go
To see fair ladies there
And some came down in red velvet
And some came down in Pall
And the last to come down was the Lady Barnard
The fairest of them all
She's cast a look on the Little Musgrave
As bright as the summer sun
And then bethought this Little Musgrave
This lady's love I've won
Good-day good-day you handsome youth
God make you safe and free
What would you give this day Musgrave
To lie one night with me
oh, I dare not for my lands, lady
I dare not for my life
For the ring on your white finger shows
You are Lord Barnard's wife
Lord Barnard's to the hunting gone
And I hope he'll never return
And you shall sleep into his bed
And keep his lady warm
There's nothing for to fear Musgrave
You nothing have to fear
I'll set a page outside the gate
To watch til morning clear
And woe be to the little footpage
And an ill death may he die
For he's away to the green wood
As fast as he could fly
And when he came to the wide water
He fell on his belly and swam
And when he came to the other side
He took to his heels and ran
And when he came to the green wood
'Twas dark as dark can be
And he found Lord Barnard and his men
Asleep beneath the trees
Rise up rise up Master he said
Rise up and speak to me
Your wife's in bed with Little Musgrave
Rise up right speedily
If this be truth you tell to me
Then gold shall be your fee
And if it be false you tell to me
Then hangéd you shall be
Go saddle me the black he said
Go saddle me the grey
And sound you not the horn said he
Lest our coming it would betray
Now there was a man in Lord Barnard's train
Who loved the Little Musgrave
And he blew his horn both loud and shrill
Away! Musgrave Away!
Oh, I think I hear the morning cock
I think I hear the jay
I think I hear Lord Barnard's horn
Away Musgrave Away
Oh, Lie still, lie still, you little Musgrave
And keep me from the cold
It's nothing but a shepherd boy
Driving his flock to the fold
Is not your hawk upon its perch
Your steed is eating hay
And you a gay lady in your arms
And yet you would away
So he's turned him right and round about
And he fell fast asleep
And when he woke Lord Barnard's men
Were standing at his feet
And how do you like my bed Musgrave
And how do you like my sheets
And how do you like my fair lady
That lies in your arms asleep
Oh, It's well I like your bed he said
And well I like your sheets
And better I like your fair lady
That lies in my arms asleep
Get up, get up young man he said
Get up as swift as you can
For it never will be said in my country
I slew an unarmed man
I have two swords in one scabbard
Full dear they cost me purse
And you shall have the best of them
I shall have the worst
And So slowly, so slowly he rose up
And slowly he put on
And slowly down the stairs he goes
A-Thinking to be slain
And the first stroke Little Musgrave took
It was both deep and sore
And down he fell at Barnard's feet
And word he never spoke more
And how do you like his cheeks, lady
And how do you like his chin
And how do you like his fair body
Now there's no life within
It's well I like his cheeks she said
And well I like his chin
And better I like his fair body
Than all your kith and kin
And he's taken up his long long sword
To strike a mortal blow
And through and through the Lady's heart
The cold steel it did go
As it fell out upon a day
As many in the year
Musgrave to the church did go
To see fair ladies there

Nic Jones - Isle of France (with video)
Video to accompany song from Nic Jones' album Noah's Ark Trap
Oh the sky was dark and the night advanced
When a convict came to the Isle of France
And around his leg was a ring and chain
And his country was of the shamrock green.
"Oh I'm from the Shamrock", this convict cried
"That has been tossed on the ocean wide".
"For being unruly, I do declare"
"I was doomed to transport these seven long years".
"When six of them they were up and passed"
"I was coming home to make up the last"
"When the winds did blow and the seas did roar"
"They cast me here on this foreign shore".
So then the coastguard he played a part
And with brandy he cheered the convicts heart
Although the night it is far advanced
You shall find a friend on the Isle of France.
So he sent a letter all to the queen
Concerning the wreck of the Shamrock Green
And his freedom came by a speedy post
For the absent convict they thought was lost.
"God bless the coastguard", this convict cried
"For he saved my life from the ocean wide"
"And I'll drink his health in a flowing glass"
"And he's to success to the Isle of France".
Song is titled 'Isle Of France' on the 1978 recording.

Nic Jones - Clyde Water
King of ballads. From "Game, Set, Match"
---
Willie sits in his stable door
And he's combing his coal-black steed,
He's doubting on fair Margaret's love
And his heart began to bleed,
"Give corn unto my horse, mother,
And meat to my man John,
And I'll away to fair Margaret's bower
Before the night comes on."
"Stay at home with me, dear Willie,
Oh stay at home with me,
In the deepest part of the Clyde water
Then you shall drowned be."
"Oh the good steed I ride upon
Cost me thrice thirty pounds,
I'll put trust in his swift feet
To take me safe and sound."
He's ridden o'er high, high hill
And he's down yon dowie den,
And the rushing in the Clyde water
Would have feared five hundred men,
"O roaring Clyde, you roar so loud
Your streams are wondrous strong,
Make me a wreck as I come back
But spare me as I'm gone."
Oh and when he's got to Margaret's bower,
He's turled low on the pin.
Saying "Rise up, me good Margaret,
Rise up and let me in."
"Oh who is this at my bower door,
Calling May Margaret's name?"
"It's only your first love, little William,
This night come to her home."
"Open up your castle gates,
Open and let me in,
For me boots they are full of the Clyde water
And I'm frozen to the skin."
"Oh me barns are full of corn, Willie,
And the stable's full of hay.
And me bower's full of gentlemen,
They'll not remove till day."
"Then it's fare thee well to you, May Margaret,
It's fare thee well and adieu,
For I have won my mother's own curse
In coming this night to you."
So he's ridden o'er high, high hill
And down yon dowie den,
And the rushing in the Clyde water
Took Willie's cane from him.
And he's leaned him over his saddle-bow
To catch his cane again,
And the rushing in the Clyde water
Took Willie's hat from him.
He's leaned him over his saddle-bow
To catch his hat by force,
And the rushing in the Clyde water
Took Willie from his horse.
And the very hour that young man sank
Into the parts so deep,
Then up and awoke this May Margaret
Out from her drowsy sleep.
"Come here come here, my mother dear,
And read my dreary dream.
Oh I dreamed my lover was at our gates
And nobody let him in."
"Oh Lie down, lie down, good Margaret,
Lie down and take your rest.
'Cause since your lover was at our gates
It's but two quarters passed."
Then nimbly, nimbly rose she up,
Went down to the river's brim,
And the louder that this lady cried
The louder grew the wind.
And the very first step that she went in,
She waded to her feet,
And it's "oh" and "alas," this lady says,
"The water's wondrous deep."
And the very next step that she went in,
She's waded to her knee.
Says she, "I would wade farther in
If I my true lover could see."
And the very last step that she went in,
She's waded to her chin.
And the deepest part of Clyde water
She found sweet William in.
"Oh you have had a cruel mother, Willie,
And I have had another.
And now we'll sleep in Clyde water
Like sister and brother."

Nic Jones - The Bonny Bunch of Roses
The Bonny Bunch of Roses from Nic Jones' second album 'Nic Jones', released in 1971.
----------------------------------------
Lyrics:
By the margin of the ocean,
One pleasant evening in the month of June,
The pleasant-singing blackbird
His charming notes did tune.
Was there I spied a woman
All in great grief and woe,
Conversing with young Bonaparte
Concerning the Bonny Bunch of Roses-O
And then up and spoke the young Napoleon
And he took hold of his mother's hand,
Oh mother dear, be patient
And soon I will take command.
I'll raise a terrible army
And through tremendous danger go.
And in spite of all of the universe
I'll conquer the Bonny Bunch of Roses-O.
And when first you saw the Great Napoleon,
You fell down on your bended knee
And you asked your father's life of him
And he's granted it most manfully.
'Twas then he took an army
And o'er the frozen alps did go;
And he said, I'll conquer Moscow
And come back for the Bonny Bunch of Roses-O.
And so he's took three hundred thousand fighting men
And kings likewise for to join his throng.
He was as well provided for
Enough to take the whole world alone.
But when he came to Moscow
All o'erpowered by driving snow
And Moscow was a-blazing,
He lost the Bonny Bunch of Roses-O.
Oh my son, don't speak so venturesome,
For England she has a heart of oak,
And England, and Ireland, and Scotland,
Their unity has never been broke.
And so my son, think on, your father
In St Helena, his body it lies low,
And you will follow after,
Beware of the Bonny Bunch of Roses-O.
And it's goodbye to my mother forever,
For I am on my dying bed.
Had I lived I might have been clever,
But now I bow my youthful head.
And while our bodies do moulder
And weeping willows over us do grow,
The deeds of brave Napoleon
Will sting the Bonny Bunch of Roses-O.
By the margin of the ocean,
One pleasant evening in the month of June,
The pleasant-singing blackbird
His charming notes did tune.
Was there I spied a female
All in great grief and woe,
Conversing with young Bonaparte
Concerning the Bonny Bunch of Roses-O
----------------------------------------
The album notes say the following about the song:
"The text of this ballad appears to have caused some confusion among folk-song enthusiasts, according to Frank Purslow in his note to the song (Marrowbones, p. 103). He mentions James Reeves particularly as having commented on it. He goes on to say that the song is an imaginary conversation between Napoleon's young son and Marie Louise, second wife of Napoleon. This idea makes the song much clearer. The son threatens to 'raise a terrible army' and to assert his power. They talk of Napoleon's Moscow campaign and Marie Louise warns her son that he'll follow Napoleon to the grave. Then, in the last verse, the son states that he is dying. This last verse becomes plainer if we understand that the son died at twenty-one of a weakness in the chest aggravated by severe, self-imposed physical exercise.
The tune in Marrowbones is a version of The Rose Tree, although I have used the more common tune, a variant of The Bonny Bunch of Roses.
People have suggested that 'roses' is a corruption of 'rushes', but either way Cecil Sharp says, 'Surely our country has never been called by a prettier name then the bonny bunch of roses-o.'"

Nic Jones - Annan Water
'Annan Water' from Nic Jones' album 'Ballads and Songs', released in 1970.
Nic wrote in the album notes: "Annan Water is not such a well-known ballad. I have altered and simplified it considerably. The original verses may be found tucked inconspicuously away in an appendix of volume 4 of the Child Ballads. The tune used is an adaption of The Brisk Young Lively Lad, found in The Folk Song Journals."
----------------------------------------
Lyrics:
Oh Annan Water's wondrous deep
And my love Annie's wondrous bonny
I'm loath that she should wet her feet
Because I love her best of any.
Go saddle to me the bonny grey mare
Go saddle her soon and make her ready
For I must cross that river tonight
And all to see my bonnie lady.
And woe betide you Annan Water
At nights you are a gloomy river,
And over you I'll build a bridge
That never more true love may sever.
And he has ridden o'er field and fell
O'er moor and moss and many a mire
His spurs of steel were sore to bide
And from the mare's feet flew the fire.
The mare flew on o'er moor and moss
But when she'd wan the Annan Water
She couldn't have ridden a furlong more
Had a thousand whips been laid upon her.
And woe betide you Annan Water
At nights you are a gloomy river,
And over you I'll build a bridge
That never more true love may sever.
Oh boatman come put off your boat
Put off your boat for golden money
For I must cross that stream tonight
Or never more I'll see my Annie.
The sides are steep the waters deep
From bank to brae the water's pouring
And your bonny grey mare she sweats for fear
She stands to hear the water roaring.
And woe betide you Annan Water
At nights you are a gloomy river,
And over you I'll build a bridge
That never more true love may sever.
And he has tried to swim that stream
And he swam on both strong and steady
But the river was broad and strength did fail
And he never saw his bonny lady.
Oh woe betide the willow wand
And woe betide the bush of brier
For it broke beneath her true love's hand
When strength did fail and limbs did tire.
And woe betide you Annan Water
At nights you are a gloomy river,
And over you I'll build a bridge
That never more true love may sever.
