The Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore (Italian pronunciation: [katteˈdraːle di ˈsanta maˈriːa del ˈfjoːre]; in English "Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flowers") is the main church of Florence, Italy. Il Duomo di Firenze, as it is ordinarily called, was begun in 1296 in the Gothic style with the design of Arnolfo di Cambio and completed structurally in 1436 with the dome engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi. The exterior of the basilica is faced with polychrome marble panels in various shades of green and pink bordered by white and has an elaborate 19th-century Gothic Revival façade by Emilio De Fabris.
The cathedral complex, located in Piazza del Duomo, includes the Baptistery and Giotto's Campanile. These three buildings are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site covering the historic centre of Florence and are a major attraction to tourists visiting Tuscany. The basilica is one of Italy's largest churches, and until development of new structural materials in the modern era, the dome was the largest in the world. It remains the largest brick dome ever constructed.
In 1418, Filippo Brunelleschi was tasked with building the largest dome ever seen at the time. He had no formal architecture training. Yet experts still don't fully understand the brilliant methods he used in contructing the dome, which tops the Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral in Florence, Italy. Please Enjoy and Subscribe. Thanks! The dome that crowns Florence’s great cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore—the Duomo—is a towering masterpiece of Renaissance ingenuity and an enduring source of mystery. Still the largest masonry dome on earth after more than six centuries, it is taller than the Statue of Liberty and weighs as much as an average cruise ship. Historians and engineers have long debated how its secretive architect, Filippo Brunelleschi, managed to keep the dome perfectly aligned and symmetrical as the sides rose and converged toward the center, 40 stories above the cathedral floor. His laborers toiled without safety nets, applying novel, untried methods. Over 4 million bricks might collapse at any moment—and we still don’t understand how Brunelleschi prevented it. To test th...

Travel video about destination Florence in Italy. Florence is the capital of Tuscany, a city of art and joie de vivre. With its magnificent tower the Palazzo Vecchio is a communal palace that has been the city’s political centre since the beginning of the 14th century. Originally it was the seat of the city’s Republican rulers but soon afterwards the MEDICI dynasty settled there, the cleverest and most powerful of the handful of families that ruled over the city. In front of the palace’s façade there is a double life-sized statue that is a copy of Michelangelo’s‚’David’, and in the Galleria Dell` Accademia there are several further sculptures by the great artist that idealised and glorified the strength of the Renaissance people. The three-sided Gothic cathedral and the Campanile are tightl...

Travel video about destination Piazza san Giovanni in Tuscany. Firenze is today’s capital of Tuscany, a city of art and joie de vivre. In the heart of the city is the Piazza San Giovanni with its Duomo, Campanile and Battistero. After the cathedrals of Rome, Milan and London, that of Santa Maria Del Fiore is the fourth largest in the Christian world. Over the northern gate is a relief that is a masterpiece of Early Renaissance relief work. The 3-sided cathedral was designed to symbolise a Latin crucifix. The main body of the cathedral is 153 metres long and 23 metres tall but in comparison with its huge dimensions, its interior is somewhat bare. In the adjoining Cathedral Museum there is a fascinating collection of pulpits that were designed for special occasions by the most prominent artis...
Florence's landmark Duomo (cathedral) is crowned by Brunelleschi's majestic dome — the first Renaissance dome and the model for many domes to follow (climb it for a glorious view). Nearby the Baptistery features Ghiberti's magnificent bronze doors, which Michelangelo called the "gates of paradise." These creations help define the Renaissance, when Florence blossomed and classical arts were reborn. Subscribe at http://goo.gl/8iBEnS for weekly updates on more European destinations. Firenze, 16/08/2016

Santa Maria,
Insel die aus Träumen geboren.
Ich habe meine Sinne verloren,
in dem Fieber, das wie Feuer brennt.
Santa Maria,
nachts an deinen schneeweißen Stränden
Hielt ich ihre Jugend in den Händen
Glück für das man keinen Namen kennt.
Sie war ein Kind der Sonne,
Schön wie ein erwachender Morgen.
Heiß war ihr stolzer Blick
Doch tief in ihrem Inneren verborgen,
Brannte die Sehnsucht - Santa Maria
Den Schritt zu wagen - Santa Maria
Vom Mädchen bis zur Frau.
umdada,...
Santa Maria,
Insel die aus Träumen geboren,
Ich hab meine Sinne verloren,
in dem Fieber, das wie Feuer brennt.
Santa Maria,
ihre Wildheit ließ mich erleben,
Mit ihr auf bunten Flügeln entschweben,
In ein fernes unbekanntes Land.
Wehrlos trieb ich dahin
Im Zauber ihres Lächelns gefangen.
Doch als der Tag erwacht
Sah ich die Tränen auf ihren Wangen,
Morgen hieß Abschied - Santa Maria
Und meine Heimat - Santa Maria
War so unendlich weit!
umdada, ...
Santa Maria,
Insel die aus Träumen geboren
Ich hab meine Sinne verloren,
in dem Fieber, das wie Feuer brennt.
Niemals mehr hab ich so empfunden,
Wie im Rausch der nächtlichen Stunden
