The dome that crowns Florence’s great cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore—the Duomo—is a towering masterpiece of Renaissance ingenuity and an enduring source of mystery. Still the largest masonry dome on earth after more than six centuries, it is taller than the Statue of Liberty and weighs as much as an average cruise ship. Historians and engineers have long debated how its secretive architect, Filippo Brunelleschi, managed to keep the dome perfectly aligned and symmetrical as the sides rose and converged toward the center, 40 stories above the cathedral floor. His laborers toiled without safety nets, applying novel, untried methods. Over 4 million bricks might collapse at any moment—and we still don’t understand how Brunelleschi prevented it. To test the latest theories, a team of U.S. master bricklayers will help build a unique experimental model Duomo using period techniques. Will it stay intact during the final precarious stages of closing over the top of the dome?

O projeto foi finalizado por Fillipo Bruneleschi que deu a catedral o seu famosíssimo (e impressionante!) Domo! Resgatando antigas técnicas romanas de construção, Bruneleschi conseguiu o impossível ao construir essa enorme cúpula que visivelmente inspirou a Igreja de S.José Operário em Manaus-Am.

È la quinta chiesa d'Europa per grandezza, dopo la Basilica di San Pietro, la Cattedrale di San Paolo a Londra, la Cattedrale di Siviglia e il Duomo di Milano. È lunga, infatti, 153 metri mentre il basamento della cupola è largo 54 metri e il dislivello dal pavimento alla cima della cupola interna è di circa 90 metri. Ha una pianta peculiare, composta com'è di un corpo basilicale a tre navate saldato ad una enorme rotonda che sorregge l'immensa Cupola del Brunelleschi, la più grande cupola in muratura mai costruita. Al suo interno è visibile la più vasta superficie mai decorata ad affresco; 3600 metri quadri.
La costruzione, iniziata sulle antiche fondazioni della chiesa di Santa Reparata nel 1296 da Arnolfo di Cambio, fu continuata da Giotto a partire dal 1334 fino alla sua morte avvenuta nel 1337. Francesco Talenti e Giovanni di Lapo Ghini la continuarono nel 1357. Nel 1412 la nuova cattedrale fu dedicata a Santa Maria del Fiore, e consacrata il 15 marzo 1436, al termine dei lavori della Cupola del Brunelleschi, da papa Eugenio IV. La facciata è stata per secoli il grande problema irrisolto del complesso episcopale fiorentino; circondata da capolavori dell'architettura di tutti i tempi, tutti coperti di una veste smagliante di marmi multicolori, la sua finitura incompiuta in pietraforte spiccava in modo inaccettabile.
Nel 1587 il Granduca Francesco I ordinò all'architetto di corte Bernardo Buontalenti di rimuovere tutti i marmi e le sculture e di coprire la martoriata facciata con un soprammattone su cui fosse eseguita una facciata dipinta di gusto manierista. Nonostante la chiara natura provvisoria dell'opera, la soluzione del Buontalenti restò in essere fino alla seconda metà dell'800.
Nel 1864 fu indetta una competizione per la realizzazione della facciata definitiva. Il vincitore fu Emilio De Fabris (1808-1883) con un progetto ispirato al gotico trecentesco. I lavori iniziarono nel 1876 e furono completati undici anni dopo da Luigi Del Moro (subentrato nel cantiere alla morte di De Fabris).
La cattedrale è costruita sul modello della basilica. L'interno, piuttosto semplice ed austero, dà una forte impressione di vuoto aereo. Alcune opere in essa contenute rispecchiano la sua funzione pubblica, con monumenti dedicati ad illustri uomini ed a comandanti militari di Firenze. Fra questi: il Monumento equestre di John Hawkwood (Giovanni Acuto) di Paolo Uccello (1436), dipinto in bicromia con terra verde e il Monumento equestre di Niccolò da Tolentino di Andrea del Castagno (1456), in pendant con il precedente, disegnato a imitazione del marmo. Sopra il portale centrale un grande disco dell'orologio affrescato con ritratti di evangelisti di Paolo Uccello (1443). Fra le decorazioni del XVI secolo, relative al periodo granducale, figura il pavimento marmoreo, attribuito a Baccio d'Agnolo e Francesco da Sangallo (1520-26). Sotto la cattedrale, fra il 1965 e il 1974, furono realizzati dei difficili lavori di scavo. La zona sotterranea fu usata per la sepoltura dei vescovi fiorentini per secoli. Recentemente è stata ricostruita la storia archeologica di quest'area, dai resti di abitazioni romane, ad una pavimentazione paleocristiana, fino alle rovine della vecchia cattedrale di Santa Reparata.
Inizialmente la Cupola sarebbe dovuta essere decorata da mosaici dorati, per riflettere al massimo la luce proveniente dalle finestre del tamburo, come suggerito dal Brunelleschi. La sua morte, però, fece naufragare questo costoso progetto e si provvide semplicemente a intonacare in bianco l'interno. In seguito il Granduca Cosimo I de' Medici scelse il tema del Giudizio Universale per affrescare l'enorme calotta, ed affidò il compito a Giorgio Vasari. I lavori durarono dal 1572 al 1579 e furono terminati, dopo la morte del Vasari, avvenuta nel 1574, da Federico Zuccari e vari collaboratori. Questi affreschi, se visti da vicino durante il percorso della salita alla cupola, mostrano chiaramente le deformazioni prospettiche e di colore usate per ottimizzare la veduta dal basso.

Florence Cathedral
The Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore (Italian pronunciation: [katteˈdraːle di ˈsanta maˈriːa del ˈfjoːre]; in English "Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flowers") is the main church of Florence, Italy. Il Duomo di Firenze, as it is ordinarily called, was begun in 1296 in the Gothic style with the design of Arnolfo di Cambio and completed structurally in 1436 with the dome engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi. The exterior of the basilica is faced with polychrome marble panels in various shades of green and pink bordered by white and has an elaborate 19th-century Gothic Revival façade by Emilio De Fabris.
The cathedral complex, located in Piazza del Duomo, includes the Baptistery and Giotto's Campanile. These three buildings are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site covering the historic centre of Florence and are a major attraction to tourists visiting Tuscany. The basilica is one of Italy's largest churches, and until development of new structural materials in the modern era, the dome was the largest in the world. It remains the largest brick dome ever constructed.

The dome that crowns Florence’s great cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore—the Duomo—is a towering masterpiece of Renaissance ingenuity and an enduring source of mystery. Still the largest masonry dome on earth after more than six centuries, it is taller than the Statue of Liberty and weighs as much as an average cruise ship. Historians and engineers have long debated how its secretive architect, Filippo Brunelleschi, managed to keep the dome perfectly aligned and symmetrical as the sides rose and converged toward the center, 40 stories above the cathedral floor. His laborers toiled without safety nets, applying novel, untried methods. Over 4 million bricks might collapse at any moment—and we still don’t understand how Brunelleschi prevented it. To test the latest theories, a team of U.S. master bricklayers will help build a unique experimental model Duomo using period techniques. È la quinta chiesa d'Europa per grandezza, dopo la Basilica di San Pietro, la Cattedrale di San Paolo a Londra, la Cattedrale di Siviglia e il Duomo di Milano. ...
È la quinta chiesa d'Europa per grandezza, dopo la Basilica di San Pietro, la Cattedrale di San Paolo a Londra, la Cattedrale di Siviglia e il Duomo di Milano. È lunga, infatti, 153 metri mentre il basamento della cupola è largo 54 metri e il dislivello dal pavimento alla cima della cupola interna è di circa 90 metri. Ha una pianta peculiare, composta com'è di un corpo basilicale a tre navate saldato ad una enorme rotonda che sorregge l'immensa Cupola del Brunelleschi, la più grande cupola in muratura mai costruita. Al suo interno è visibile la più vasta superficie mai decorata ad affresco; 3600 metri quadri.
La costruzione, iniziata sulle antiche fondazioni della chiesa di Santa Reparata nel 1296 da Arnolfo di Cambio, fu continuata da Giotto a partire dal 1334 fino alla sua morte avvenuta nel 1337. Francesco Talenti e Giovanni di Lapo Ghini la continuarono nel 1357. Nel 1412 la nuova cattedrale fu dedicata a Santa Maria del Fiore, e consacrata il 15 marzo 1436, al termine dei lavori della Cupola del Brunelleschi, da papa Eugenio IV. La facciata è stata per secoli il grande problema irrisolto del complesso episcopale fiorentino; circondata da capolavori dell'architettura di tutti i tempi, tutti coperti di una veste smagliante di marmi multicolori, la sua finitura incompiuta in pietraforte spiccava in modo inaccettabile.
Nel 1587 il Granduca Francesco I ordinò all'architetto di corte Bernardo Buontalenti di rimuovere tutti i marmi e le sculture e di coprire la martoriata facciata con un soprammattone su cui fosse eseguita una facciata dipinta di gusto manierista. Nonostante la chiara natura provvisoria dell'opera, la soluzione del Buontalenti restò in essere fino alla seconda metà dell'800.
Nel 1864 fu indetta una competizione per la realizzazione della facciata definitiva. Il vincitore fu Emilio De Fabris (1808-1883) con un progetto ispirato al gotico trecentesco. I lavori iniziarono nel 1876 e furono completati undici anni dopo da Luigi Del Moro (subentrato nel cantiere alla morte di De Fabris).
La cattedrale è costruita sul modello della basilica. L'interno, piuttosto semplice ed austero, dà una forte impressione di vuoto aereo. Alcune opere in essa contenute rispecchiano la sua funzione pubblica, con monumenti dedicati ad illustri uomini ed a comandanti militari di Firenze. Fra questi: il Monumento equestre di John Hawkwood (Giovanni Acuto) di Paolo Uccello (1436), dipinto in bicromia con terra verde e il Monumento equestre di Niccolò da Tolentino di Andrea del Castagno (1456), in pendant con il precedente, disegnato a imitazione del marmo. Sopra il portale centrale un grande disco dell'orologio affrescato con ritratti di evangelisti di Paolo Uccello (1443). Fra le decorazioni del XVI secolo, relative al periodo granducale, figura il pavimento marmoreo, attribuito a Baccio d'Agnolo e Francesco da Sangallo (1520-26). Sotto la cattedrale, fra il 1965 e il 1974, furono realizzati dei difficili lavori di scavo. La zona sotterranea fu usata per la sepoltura dei vescovi fiorentini per secoli. Recentemente è stata ricostruita la storia archeologica di quest'area, dai resti di abitazioni romane, ad una pavimentazione paleocristiana, fino alle rovine della vecchia cattedrale di Santa Reparata.
Inizialmente la Cupola sarebbe dovuta essere decorata da mosaici dorati, per riflettere al massimo la luce proveniente dalle finestre del tamburo, come suggerito dal Brunelleschi. La sua morte, però, fece naufragare questo costoso progetto e si provvide semplicemente a intonacare in bianco l'interno. In seguito il Granduca Cosimo I de' Medici scelse il tema del Giudizio Universale per affrescare l'enorme calotta, ed affidò il compito a Giorgio Vasari. I lavori durarono dal 1572 al 1579 e furono terminati, dopo la morte del Vasari, avvenuta nel 1574, da Federico Zuccari e vari collaboratori. Questi affreschi, se visti da vicino durante il percorso della salita alla cupola, mostrano chiaramente le deformazioni prospettiche e di colore usate per ottimizzare la veduta dal basso.

The three-sided Gothic cathedral and the Campanile are tightly packed into the city centre’s Cathedral Square and the Santa Maria Del Fiore Cathedral is a replica of St. Peters in Rome and the Cathedral of Milan. The bronze ‘Tower To Paradise’ adorns the city’s most sacred building, the Battistero, its mighty inner-dome, in Byzantine style, being supported by strong Roman columns while, in a gigantic mosaic, Christ the ‘Judge of the World’ features alongside angels and battles with the devil. San Lorenzo was the Medici’s cathedral and one of the earliest creations of the Florentine Renaissance. To make way for it, an entire section of the city was torn down, a process that cost the Medici a large sum of money. Close to the Holy Antonius Cloister there is now a monastery and a museum and everywhere there are striking frescos by the artist Monk, Fra Angelico, several of which are on view in the monastery and its surrounding buildings. It could be said that the world obtained its taste for culture from Florence, a city in which art and culture unite in beautiful completion.

Called the Duomo, this massive, impressive cathedral is in the heart of Florence, and has dominated the city's skyline for centuries. In fact, the construction of the Duomo, locally called Santa Maria del Fiore, began more than 700 years ago. The exterior is stunning, with a white, green and pink marble facade. "My name is Lloyd. I had say just the stonework. Everything is put together. I mean you look at the facade and it does not look like...I mean it is amazing on the outside, but to see the guts of the Duomo is incredible."
Here is a view of Vasari's frescoes, depicting Heaven and Hell. Let us go up and see more. During the construction, it was unclear how such a large dome could be placed on the cathedral without using outdated construction methods. Brunelleschi came up with the novel idea to create two shell structures, so that workers could use the inner shell to support their weight and construct the heavy outer shell. "My name is Jill McGee. One of the really neat things, when you get to the top they have these little bitty windows that you can look out and see the entire city, and it is just panoramic." The main body of the cathedral is 153 metres long and 23 metres tall but in comparison with its huge dimensions, its interior is somewhat bare. In the adjoining Cathedral Museum there is a fascinating collection of pulpits that were designed for special occasions by the most prominent artists of the day. The Firenze Academy has altered the face of European culture and at the beginning of the 15th century the young Cosimo De Medici became a follower of PLATON`S doctrine and philosophy. 463 steps within the Academy’s two-tiered dome lead to a superb view that extends over the length and breadth of the old city. Firenze is today’s capital of Tuscany, a city of art and joie de vivre.In the heart of the city is the Piazza San Giovanni with its Duomo, Campanile and Battistero. After the cathedrals of Rome, Milan and London, that of Santa Maria Del Fiore is the fourth largest in the Christian world. Over the northern gate is a relief that is a masterpiece of Early Renaissance relief work. The 3-sided cathedral was designed to symbolise a Latin crucifix. The main body of the cathedral is 153 metres long and 23 metres tall but in comparison with its huge dimensions, its interior is somewhat bare. In the adjoining Cathedral Museum there is a fascinating collection of pulpits that were designed for special occasions by the most prominent artists of the day. The Firenze Academy has altered the face of European culture and at the beginning of the 15th century the young Cosimo De Medici became a follower of PLATON`S doctrine and philosophy. 463 steps within the Academy’s two-tiered dome lead to a superb view that extends over the length and breadth of the old city. La Cupola ottagonale fu voltata dal 1418 al 1434 secondo il progetto di Filippo Brunelleschi,Un capolavoro capace di resistere ai fulmini, ai terremoti, al passare dei secoli,L'innovazione mirabile del Brunelleschi fu quella di voltare la Cupola senza armature, grazie all'uso di una doppia volta con intercapedine, di cui l'interna (spessa oltre due metri) realizzata con conci a spina di pesce, aveva una funzione strutturale essendo autoportante e quella esterna solo di copertura.

The Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore (Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flowers) is the main church of Florence, Italy. Il Duomo di Firenze, as it is ordinarily called, was begun in 1296 in the Gothic style with the design of Arnolfo di Cambio and completed structurally in 1436 with the dome engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi. The exterior of the basilica is faced with polychrome marble panels in various shades of green and pink bordered by white and has an elaborate 19th-century Gothic Revival façade by Emilio De Fabris.
