Harmony Headlands State Park Trail
Family friendly hike in San Luis Obispo County The Harmony Headlands State Park Trail is easy to find. It's located near the coastline in San Luis Obispo County, CA. The main trail starts at a parking lot about a mile south of Harmony on Highway 1 between Cambria and Morro Bay. It's a two mile hike from the highway to the scenic coastline, making it a four-mile round trip. It's a wide and comfortable trail made of compacted dirt. It has slight rolling hills making it perfect for beginners, families and even strollers. The trail has diverse and unique habitats supporting rare, endangered and sensitive plant and animal species. Along the rocky outcrops, lichen, ferns and Indian paintbrush are scattered throughout the grasslands. In the fresh water habitats of wetlands, riparian corridors and ponds, willows, rushes and cattails can be seen. Along the intertidal areas, sea mammals can be seen and heard. Overhead seabirds and shorebirds soar. Making their way through their grassland homes, California ground squirrels, brush rabbits, skunks, coyote, mule deer and raccoons are among the residents. On our hike we saw squirrels, rabbits, deer, a sea lion and lots of wildflowers. There are several benches for resting on the path and a portable bathroom a short distance from the beginning . It took our family about about an hour and 40 minutes with lots of stops to enjoy the scenery. Be sure to bring a bottle of water, hats and sunscreen. The park is open for day use hiking from 6am to sunset. A small parking lot is visible along the west side adjacent to the southbound lane of Highway One. The parking lot can accommodate approximately 10 vehicles. http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=25735 Find more adventures in San Luis Obispo County Visitors Guide. http://www.slovisitorsguide.com/ Posted by Beth Brennan. Trail Of Tears (for Human Rights Day)
I wanted to do this for Human Rights Day. Trail of Trars - John Denver cover Songwriters REYNOLDS, ALLEN / COOK, ROGER FREDERICK Learn more about the Trail Of Tears @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rJr4kgDdqU I had to change it to sing it. Check the original out @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNixgMoppl8 *Sorry I sang the wrong lyric. But just as I sat down the sing this -- a buch of birds started churping with me. But I was thinking about he expansion of White Man every mile. No more beautiful moons may we spend on our land In the north, the scarlet council talks of war And the long knives have massacred the tribe and burned corn We're not welcome in our homeland anymore No more songs of the hunters on the baffalo plain *No more smoke from sacred fires touch these hills *And the numbers of the people grow fewer every mile And our children will not leave the Great Spirit's ways There will be a trail of tears There will be a trail of pain And Jackson will have the Mississippi and the twenty dollar bill But for us the trail is all that will remain On the streets of Rapid City On the road to Wounded Knee There is whiskey for forgetting everything But the old ones say, "There may be time learning from each other The way that it had once been meant to be" There is still a trail of tears There is still a trail of pain And Jackson has got the Mississippi and the twenty dollar bill But for us the trail of tears remains And Jackson has got the Mississippi and the twenty dollar bill But how long will the trail of tears remain? Every year, as it has since 1973, this ultimate challenge begins in the states most populated city, Anchorage, and then dives into the Alaska Bush on a historic trail that wends over mountain ranges, along frozen rivers, and onto the Bering Sea ice. The finish line lies 1,000-plus miles away in Nome, beneath a giant, burled archway. There, dogs and their drivers are greeted by masses of locals, vacationing fans, officials, media, and other mushers who intimately know what that team has just endured. To simply finish is the goal for entrants; to win is the accomplishment of a rare few. Indeed, more people have climbed Mount Everest than have finished the Iditarod . Editorial Reviews About the Author Come along with Tricia Brown on this ride through time and wilderness, celebrating the history-makers and Alaskas official state sport. Brown is an avid fan and happy to volunteer or write about the race, rather than ride the runners at -40 F. Many of the books on mushing that she has written and edited have brought the Iditarod and its stars to an international audience. "- published: 28 Feb 2014
