Wayne Carson (born Wayne Carson Head; May 31, 1943 – July 20, 2015), sometimes credited as Wayne Carson Thompson, was an American country musician, songwriter, and record producer. He played percussion, piano, guitar, and bass. His most famous songs as a writer include "Neon Rainbow", "The Letter", "Always on My Mind" (written with Mark James and Johnny Christopher), and "Soul Deep".
Born in Denver, Colorado, his parents, Odie and Olivia Head, used the pseudonym Thompson as performers, and played music professionally. They met in Nebraska while working for radio station KMMJ, moved to Colorado and eventually to Springfield, Missouri to join the KWTO music staff. By then, they were better known by their stage names, "Shorty and Sue". Shorty Thompson was perhaps best known around the Ozarks as a member of radio and television mainstay the Tall Timber Boys.
Wayne Carson wanted to pick up a guitar when he was about 14, after hearing a recording by Merle Travis. Even so, he was quickly taken by the newer sound of rock 'n' roll. He lived in several cities, including Denver, as a young man leading bands; and moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 1962. He initially used his parents' stage name, becoming known and credited as Wayne Carson Thompson, before dropping the last name and adopting the name Wayne Carson.

"Always on My Mind" is an American country music song by Johnny Christopher, Mark James and Wayne Carson, recorded first by Gwen McCrae (as "You Were Always On My Mind") and Brenda Lee in 1972.
Allmusic lists over 300 recorded releases of the song in versions by dozens of performers. While Brenda Lee's version had stalled at #45 on the country charts in 1972, other performers would reach the top 20 in the United States and elsewhere with their own versions: Elvis Presley in 1972; John Wesley Ryles in 1979; Willie Nelson's Grammy Award winning version in 1982; Pet Shop Boys in 1987.
Wayne Carson said that he wrote the song in 10 minutes at his home in Springfield at his kitchen table and completed the song in studio with the assistance of Johnny and Mark.
Carson, who had the song about a year and one day, was finishing a recording session. Producer Chips Moman asked about recording "that mind" song, but added it would need a bridge. Wayne went upstairs to the studio's old piano, where he was trying to work out a bridge, when Johnny and Mark walked in the door, and he asked for their help to complete his song.

If Wayne Carson Thompson had done nothing more than write The Box Top's hits "The Letter", "Neon Rainbow" & "Soul Deep", that should have been enough to secure him a plavce in pop music history... ...but, he DID do more...much more! Wayne co-wrote the classic "Always On My Mind", as well as penning hit songs for the likes of Waylon Jennings, Gary Stewart, Conway Twitty, Bruce Channel...the list goes on. He also RECORDED some darn fine songs...and, this is one of them. It was released in Australia in 1970 on a Monument 45, PK3645. It got some airplay around the place (certainly 4IP played it in Brisbane), but, the only place it charted was in Sydney...it reached # 49. Regardless of it's failure to chart, it's one of the finest pieces of country/pop you're ever likely to hear. This upload...

You'll probably remember this song as a hit for the Box Tops in 1969... ...but, here's another, equally good, version from the same year...from the man who wrote it. Wayne wrote several hits for The Box Tops, as well as a string of hits for major country artists...and, he co-wrote the CMA, ACM and Grammy Award winning classic, "Always On My Mind". Little wonder that he is a member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall Of Fame. This track was released in Australia in 1969 as the flipside of a Monument 45, PK3132.
