My first day in Jerusalem. The Western Wall, sometimes referred to as the Wailing Wall or simply the Kotel , and as al-Buraaq Wall in Arabic, is an important Jewish religious site located in the Old City of Jerusalem. Just over half the wall, including its 17 courses located below street level, dates from the end of the Second Temple period, being constructed around 19 BCE by Herod the Great.

In Judaism, the Western Wall is venerated as the sole remnant of the Holy Temple. It has become a place of pilgrimage for Jews, as it is the closest permitted accessible site to the holiest spot in Judaism, namely the Even ha-shetiya or Foundation Stone, which lies on the Temple Mount. According to one rabbinic opinion, Jews may not set foot upon the Temple Mount and doing so is a sin punishable by Kareth. While almost all historians and archaeologists and most rabbinical authorities believe that the rocky outcrop in the Dome of the Rock is the Foundation Stone, some rabbis say it is located directly opposite the exposed section of the Western Wall, near the El-kas fountain. This spot was the site of the Holy of Holies when the Temple stood.

Jewish tradition teaches that the Western Wall was built by King David and that the wall we see today is built upon his foundations, which date from the time of the First Temple.

U.S. spy agencies mined Internet data (June 6, 2013)

U.S. intelligence agencies operated a broad data-mining program that extracted e-mail, photos and other private communications from some of the biggest Internet companies, American and British newspapers reported Thursday. The agencies got access to the central servers of nine major firms, including Microsoft, Apple, Google, Yahoo and Facebook, the Guardian and The Washington Post reported. The Post said it had been provided a detailed briefing presentation document on the program, called PRISM. The program has been running since 2007 and has undergone "exponential growth" since then, the Post reported. It is now the leading source of raw material for the National Security Agency, the secretive U.S. intelligence operation that monitors electronic communications. CNN is attempting to confirm the reports, which came out a day after the Guardian revealed that the government may be collecting the phone records of millions of Americans. The NSA told CNN it had no comment. The Guardian published a four-page, top-secret government order requiring "originating and terminating" phone numbers plus the location, time and duration of calls from the telecommunications giant Verizon, allowing the FBI and NSA to obtain the records from April 25 to July 19. According to a briefing slide published by the Guardian, PRISM began with data from Microsoft in 2007. The program began collecting data from Yahoo in 2008 and from Google, Facebook and the message system PalTalk in 2009. YouTube became a source in 2010, Skype and AOL in 2011 and Apple in late 2012, the slide recounts. The Post said government officials would not comment on the article. "You've got to watch the power of government," former Rep. Ron Paul told CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360." "Power in government is almost always abused. And this is abuse. It's very, very dangerous." The Texas Republican said the government was violating the constitutional rights of Americans to probable cause required before authorities can conduct searches. A Google spokesman told CNN: "Google cares deeply about the security of our users' data. We disclose user data to government in accordance with the law, and we review all such requests carefully. From time to time, people allege that we have created a government 'back door' into our systems, but Google does not have a 'back door' for the government to access private user data." A statement from Microsoft said the company provides user data only when legally required and only for specific accounts. "If the government has a broader voluntary national security program to gather customer data we don't participate in it," Microsoft said. Meanwhile, Apple spokesman Steve Dowling told CNN his company has never heard of PRISM. "We do not provide any government agency with direct access to our servers, and any government agency requesting customer data must get a court order," Dowling said. And Facebook spokeswoman Jodi Seth told CNN the social media giant won't give government agencies "direct access" to its servers. "When Facebook is asked for data or information about specific individuals, we carefully scrutinize any such request for compliance with all applicable laws, and provide information only to the extent required by law," Seth said. http://www.cnn.com/2013/06/06/politics/nsa-internet-mining/index.html

The BBC's Jim Muir: "People are being kept weeks and weeks just to register with the UN." Correspondents say the battle for Qusair has highlighted Hezbollah's growing role in the Syrian conflict - a development that has heightened sectarian tensions in the wider region. Late on Wednesday Lebanese media said that several rockets had landed in the Hezbollah stronghold of Baalbek inside Lebanon. Earlier this week, the leader of the main umbrella of rebel forces said his men were ready to fight inside Lebanon. Sarin 'used' In Paris, Mr Hollande told reporters: "We have the elements which now allow us to give certainty over the use of chemical weapons in Syria - at what level we still do not know. "What has happened in Syria must be one more piece of pressure that can be put on the Syrian regime and its allies." His comments followed those of French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, who revealed on Tuesday that samples taken from locations of alleged chemical weapon attacks in Syria, including Saraqeb and Jobar, and brought to France had tested positive for the nerve agent, sarin. Mr Fabius said he had "no doubt" that sarin had been used by "the Syrian regime and its accomplices", but did not specify instances of its use. The US says more proof is needed. The Syrian government has repeatedly denied using chemical weapons, and has in turn accused the rebels of doing so, an allegation that they have also rejected.

A dozen people have already died since the weekend. In the German city of Dresden the authorities are warning the river Elbe could reach nine metres - that is seven above what is normal for this time of year. Huge parts of the city are already flooded, hundreds have been evacuated and schools closed. Elsewhere in flood-affected regions, soldiers and residents have been reinforcing soaked dikes with sandbags to keep them from breaking. In the Czech Republic, numerous Prague suburbs have been under water but levels there appear to be receding. Austria, Slovakia and Poland are just a few of the countries which have also been coping with the floods. Hungary has declared a state of emergency, with the river Danube expected to peak at Budapest on Thursday.
