The M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle (IAR) is a lightweight, magazine-fed 5.56mm weapon used by the United States Marine Corps. It is intended to enhance an automatic rifleman's maneuverability, and it is based on the Heckler & Koch HK416. The U.S. Marine Corps is planning to purchase 6,500 M27s to replace a portion of the M249 light machine guns currently employed by automatic riflemen within Infantry and Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalions. Approximately 8,000–10,000 M249s will remain in service at the company level to be used at the discretion of company commanders. The United States Army does not plan to purchase the IAR.
In 1985, the U.S. Marine Corps adopted the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon, one year after the U.S. Army. Procurement was a service-level decision because the weapon was adopted by the Army with a contract method the Marines could use. While the belt-fed M249 was portable and had a high volume of fire, it was heavy for its role. Gunners could not keep pace with riflemen and the cumbersome light machine gun was not suited for Military Operations on Urban Terrain.

An automatic rifle is a type of magazine-fed rifle that uses either its recoil or a portion of the gas propelling the projectile to remove the spent cartridge case, cock the rifle, load a new cartridge and fire again repeatedly, as long as the trigger is held down or until the magazine is exhausted. Automatic rifles are distinguished from semi-automatic rifles in their ability to fire more than one shot in succession once the trigger is pulled. Many automatic rifles are select-fire weapons which are capable of firing in fully automatic and semi-automatic modes, or in some cases, even being capable of burst-fire.
The world's first automatic rifle was the Italian Cei-Rigotti. Introduced in 1900, these 6.5mm Carcano or 7.65×53mm gas-operated, selective-fire, carbines attracted considerable attention at the time. They used 10-, 20- and 50-round detachable box magazines. Unfortunately, they had several failings, including frequent jams and erratic shooting. In the end, no Army took an interest in the design and the rifle was abandoned before it could be further developed.

Airsoft Gun Review of the VFC M27 IAR - Worth $450 Airsoft Station: http://www.airsoftstation.com/ VFC H&K; M27 IAR: http://www.airsoftstation.com/vfc-h-k-m27-iar-full-metal-airsoft-rifle/ The VFC M27 IAR is one of my favorite M4 type rifles. I want a rifle that feels invisible to what I can do to it by mistake and I want it to be as easy to use as possible. From the stock to the handguard, the M27 can accommodate any player but if the M27 is a bit too long for your liking then how about the 416? Preferences are preferences but maybe yours match mine. The M27's damage is good, killing in 3 shots up close - or two where one is a headshot. At a distance you'll find damage remains remarkably consistent, up until an extreme range where you may need up to 4 shots to kill. Rate of fire is moderately low, at 705 rounds per minute. This will help keep you on target and prolong your magazine, at the cost of less reliable performance in closer quarters. Hipfire performance is generally poor, and while the 100 rounds can be effective from the hip if fired in short bursts - pinning the trig...
