Nathan (given name)

Nathan is a masculine given name. It is derived from the Hebrew verb נתן meaning to give (standard Hebrew Natan, Yiddish Nussen or Nosson, Tiberian Hebrew Nāṯān). The meaning of the name in Jewish culture could be rendered "he [God] has given" or "he will give".

The related name Elnathan could be rendered "Gift of God". Four different people named Elnathan are mentioned in the Hebrew Bible: one at 2 Kings 24:8, and three in Ezra 8:15–20. Similar ancient names are Nathaniel, with the same meaning as Elnathan, and Jonathan which signifies "God has given". Nathan can also be used as a nickname for Nathaniel.

Familiar forms of Nathan used in English include Nat, Nath, Nate and Nathaniel.

Nathan (prophet)

Nathan the Prophet (Hebrew: נתן הנביא‎; Syriac: ܢܬܢ‎ fl. c. 1000 BC) is a person in the Hebrew Bible.

His actions are described in the Books of Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles (especially 2 Samuel 7:2-17, 12:1-25).

According to 2 Samuel, he was a court prophet who lived in the time of King David. He announced to David the covenant God was making with him (2 Samuel 7), and he came to David to reprimand him over his committing adultery with Bathsheba while she was the wife of Uriah the Hittite whose death the King had also arranged to hide his previous transgression (2 Samuel 11-12).

According to Chronicles, Nathan wrote histories of the reigns of both David (1 Chronicles 29:29) and Solomon (2 Chronicles 9:29), and was involved in the music of the temple (see 2 Chronicles 29:25).

In 1 Kings 1:8-45 it is Nathan who tells the dying David of the plot of Adonijah to become king, resulting in Solomon being proclaimed king instead.

King David named one of his sons Nathan, possibly after the prophet.

Starboy Nathan

Nathan Abraham Lauren Fagan-Gayle (born 2 November 1986, South London), known commercially as Nathan and more recently Starboy Nathan, is an English R&B singer, most famous for his Top 40 singles "Come into My Room" and "Diamonds".

Biography

Early life

Nathan is the son of reggae singer Lorna Gee. Nathan and his mother moved to Jamaica when he was two years old so that she could pursue her career. As her profile developed she relocated to the United States while Nathan remained in Jamaica with his grandmother. At the age of five he joined his mother in New York City where they settled until Nathan turned eleven years old.

2006-2008: First studio album, Masterpiece

In 2006, Nathan released his debut single "Come into My Room" which charted inside the UK top 40, peaking at number 37. This was his only single for the label V2 Records. His second single "Round and Round", released in January 2007, marked a change in record label and was the first for Mona Records/Vibes Corner Music. On 9 October 2006, he released his debut album Masterpiece, which was led by the third single "Cold as Ice".Masterpiece debuted and peaked at number 122 on the UK albums chart when it was subsequently reissued in 2007. The fourth single from the album, "Do Without My Love" was released prior to this reissue and became the second biggest hit from Masterpiece, peaking at number 44 on the UK Singles Chart.

Wood

Wood is a porous and fibrous structural tissue found in the stems and roots of trees and other woody plants.

It has been used for thousands of years for both fuel and as a construction material. It is an organic material, a natural composite of cellulose fibers (which are strong in tension) embedded in a matrix of lignin which resists compression. Wood is sometimes defined as only the secondary xylem in the stems of trees, or it is defined more broadly to include the same type of tissue elsewhere such as in the roots of trees or shrubs. In a living tree it performs a support function, enabling woody plants to grow large or to stand up by themselves. It also conveys water and nutrients between the leaves, other growing tissues, and the roots. Wood may also refer to other plant materials with comparable properties, and to material engineered from wood, or wood chips or fiber.

The Earth contains about 434 billion cubic meters of growing stock forest, 47% of which is commercial. As an abundant, carbon-neutral renewable resource, woody materials have been of intense interest as a source of renewable energy. In 1991, approximately 3.5 cubic kilometers of wood were harvested. Dominant uses were for furniture and building construction.

British Sea Power

British Sea Power are an indie rock band based in Brighton, East Sussex, England, although three of the band members originally come from Natland (near Kendal), Cumbria, England. The wide-ranging nature of their material has led critics to liken their sound to a variety of groups, from The Cure and Joy Division to the Pixies and Arcade Fire. The band are famed for their live performances, the unusual lyrical content of their songs and the adventurous choice of locations for some of their shows. British Sea Power's members are Jan Scott Wilkinson (vocals, guitar), Martin Noble (guitar), Neil Hamilton Wilkinson (bass guitar, vocals, guitar), Matthew Wood; (drums), Phil Sumner (cornet, keyboards) and Abi Fry (viola).

History

Early years and The Decline of British Sea Power

British Sea Power's Yan and Hamilton are brothers and were school friends with Wood in Kendal. They were in a number of bands together while at school, but after finishing his exams Yan moved to study at the University of Reading, where he met guitarist Noble, who was originally from Bury, Greater Manchester. A few years later, Hamilton and Wood joined them and formed a band.

Wood (Kent cricketer, 1828)

Wood (first name and dates unknown) was an English cricketer who made two known appearances in first-class matches for Kent from 1828 to 1829.
