Popsicle is a popular brand of ice pop in the United States and Canada and became a genericized trademark for any type of ice pop due to its popularity. The first ice pop was created by accident in 1905 when 11-year-old Frank Epperson left a glass of homemade soda on his porch on a very cold San Francisco night. The next morning he went to go get the soda and it was frozen. Using the stirring stick that he had also left in the glass, he pulled it out and tried it. "Popsicle" is a trademark held by Unilever.

In 1905 in San Francisco, 11-year-old Frank Epperson was mixing a white powdered flavoring for soda and water out on the porch. He left it there, with a stirring stick still in it. That night, temperatures reached a record low, and the next morning, the boy discovered the drink had frozen to the stick, inspiring the idea of a fruit-flavored 'Popsicle', a portmanteau of soda pop and icicle. Eighteen years later in 1923, Epperson introduced frozen pop on a stick to the public at Neptune Beach, an amusement park in Belmar, New Jersey. Seeing that it was a success, in 1924 Epperson applied for a patent for his "frozen confectionery" which he called "the Epsicle ice pop".^[1] He renamed it to Popsicle, allegedly at the insistence of his children. "Popsicle" is now a trademark held by Unilever. It was originally available in seven flavors and marketed as a "frozen drink on a stick." The form is unique, with two parts joined together on two sticks, so the two sections could be divided and shared. The bouncy composite stick, similar in shape and size to an emery board, with round ends used as a handle became as well known as the treat, commonly used for craft projects by children and adults.

In 1925, Epperson sold the rights to the Popsicle to the Joe Lowe Company of New York. In 1989, Good Humor, a subsidiary of Unilever, bought the rights.^[2] In June 2006, Popsicles with "natural flavors and colors" were introduced, replacing the original versions in some cases. In addition, Popsicle provides several sugar-free flavors.

Popsicle Pete[link]

In April 1939, Popsicle Pete was introduced on the radio program Buck Rogers in the 25th Century as having won the "Typical American Boy Contest."^[3][4] The character told listeners that they could win presents by sending wrappers from Popsicle products to the manufacturer. During the 1940s, Popsicle Pete ads were created by Woody Gelman and his partner Ben Solomon. The ads appeared in print, television commercials and activity books until 1995.

Creamsicle is a brand name for a different frozen dessert also owned by Unilever. Again on the same flat wooden stick, it is made as a single flat bar with a rounded end. The center is vanilla ice cream, covered by a layer of flavored ice. Creamsicle flavors include orange, blue raspberry, lime, grape and cherry. They are available in several varieties, including 100 Calorie Bars, Low Fat Bars, No Sugar Added Bars, and Sugar Free Bars. 50-50 bar is an alternative name for a Creamsicle.^[5] Today, the Dreamsicle, whose center is ice milk, is much more common than the Creamsicle.

In the United States, August 14 has been named as National Creamsicle Day.^[6][7]

Fudgsicle is another registered trademark of Unilever. In the early 20th century, the product was sold as Fudgicle.^[8] This frozen dessert is in a flat shape on a stick, but it is chocolate-flavored with a texture somewhat similar to ice cream. Fudgsicles are available in 100 Calorie Bars, Low Fat Bars, No Sugar Added Bars, and Sugar Free Bars. The box can be all milk chocolate or a mixed box with white chocolate, milk chocolate and dark chocolate.

Slow Melt Pops are newer to the Popsicle product line. The addition of a small amount of gelatin helps them stay frozen longer than traditional ice pops. Slow Melt Pops are available in several varieties, including Slow Melt Mighty Minis, Fantastic Fruity, Swirlwinds, Slow Melt Dora the Explorer, and movie-themed Ice Age.

Firecrackers are American Fourth of July Popsicles, in a shape resembling a firecracker.

Yosicles are new to the Popsicle line. The Yosicle is a Popsicle containing yogurt.

Diana Jean Krall, OC, OBC (born November 16, 1964) is a Canadian jazz pianist and singer, known for her contralto vocals.^[2] She has sold more than 6 million albums in the US and over 15 million worldwide. On December 11, 2009, Billboard magazine named her the second Jazz artist of the 2000–09 decade, establishing her as one of the best-selling artists of her time. She is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debuting at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums.^[3] To date, she has won three Grammy Awards and eight Juno Awards. She also has earned nine gold, three platinum, and seven multi-platinum albums.

In 1993, Krall released her first album, Stepping Out, which she recorded with John Clayton and Jeff Hamilton. It caught the attention of producer Tommy LiPuma, who produced her second album, Only Trust Your Heart (1995).^{[citation needed]}

Her third album, All for You: A Dedication to the Nat King Cole Trio (1996), was nominated for a Grammy and continued for 70 weeks in the Billboard jazz charts. Love Scenes (1997) quickly became a hit record with the trio of Krall, Russell Malone (guitar) and Christian McBride (bass).^{[citation needed]}

In August 2000, Krall was paired on a 20-city tour with Tony Bennett. They were paired again for a song on the TV series Spectacle: Elvis Costello with...^{[citation needed]}

Orchestral arrangements by Johnny Mandel provided the background on When I Look In Your Eyes (1999). The band mix was kept, following arrangements on The Look of Love (2001) created by Claus Ogerman; this record achieved platinum status and reached the top 10 of the Billboard 200. The title track from the album, a cover of the Casino Royale standard popularized in the late 1960s by Dusty Springfield and Sérgio Mendes, reached number 22 on the adult contemporary chart.^{[citation needed]}

In September 2001, Krall began a world tour. Her concert at the Paris Olympia was recorded and released as her first live record, Diana Krall - Live in Paris. The album included covers of Billy Joel's "Just The Way You Are" (a hit on U.S. smooth jazz radio) and Joni Mitchell's "A Case Of You."^{[citation needed]}

The 2001 movie The Score (U.S.A. and Germany) starring Robert De Niro and Marlon Brando, features a recording of Krall entitled: “I’ll Make It Up As I Go.” This song accompanies the film’s ending Credits (Chapter 12) and was composed by a fellow Canadian, David Foster.^[4]

After marrying Elvis Costello, she worked with him as a lyricist and started to compose her own songs, resulting in the album The Girl in the Other Room. The album, released in April 2004, quickly rose to the top five in the United Kingdom and made the Australian top 40 album charts.^{[citation needed]}

She also joined Ray Charles on his Genius Loves Company album in 2004 on the song, "You Don't Know Me".^{[citation needed]}

In late May 2007, Krall was featured in a Lexus ad campaign.^[5] She also sang, "Dream a Little Dream of Me" with piano accompaniment by pianist Hank Jones.

Quiet Nights, her latest album, was released on 31 March 2009.^{[citation needed]}

Krall also produced Barbra Streisand's album Love Is the Answer, released on 29 Sep 2009.^{[citation needed]}

Personal life[link]

Krall was born on November 16, 1964 in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada. Her father played piano around the house and her mother sang in a community choir. She was playing piano herself at the age of four and playing jazz in a local restaurant at 15. She went to the Berklee College of Music in Boston on a scholarship before heading out to L.A. to play jazz. She returned to Canada to release her first album in 1993.^[6]

Krall lost her mother Adella to multiple myeloma in 2002, within months of also losing her mentors Ray Brown and Rosemary Clooney.^{[citation needed]} Diana's only sibling, Michelle, is a former member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

Krall and British musician Elvis Costello were married on December 6, 2003 at Elton John's estate outside London.^[7] Their twin sons, Dexter Henry Lorcan and Frank Harlan James, were born December 6, 2006 in New York City.^[8]

In 2000, she was awarded the Order of British Columbia.^[9] In 2003 she was given an honorary Ph.D. (Fine Arts) from the University of Victoria.^[10] In 2004, she was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame.^[11] In 2005, she was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.^[12]

In 2008, Nanaimo Harbourfront Plaza was renamed Diana Krall Plaza.^[13]
