Timelapse Montage
A montage of my timelapse shots through the summer of 2010.
The dolly moves were done using two custom track and dolly systems that I engineered, utilizing off the shelf components with a bit of custom fabrication. My primary system consists of a set of Mumford rotary tables with a Time Machine for the motion control programming. The secondary system consisted of a lower tech servo city DC motor.
Music is by Hans Zimmer, "Dream is Collapsing" from the Inception soundtrack.

Birdmen is a documentary film about the dream of human flight becoming reality. For millennia, humans have looked to the sky and dreamed of arcing through the air, like birds. And now, after hundreds of thousands of years, humans can fly. It is dangerous, deadly, and requires years of training, but a select few have committed their lives to the pursuit of the purest form of human flight: Wingsuit BASE Jumping.
'Birdmen' follows the dream of human flight, from its inception in ancient times to the modern world. What started with stuntmen hurling themselves to their death from objects such as the Eiffel Tower has become a respected extreme sport in which athletes zoom through the mountains at 150mph, just inches from trees and cliff faces.
During the film, professional wingsuit pilots Ellen Brennan, Mike Steen, and Matt Gerdes escort you through the inspiring yet tragic history of their ancestral birdmen and then show you the cutting edge of human flight in the year 2012. Matt, Mike, and Ellen are some of the most talented wingsuit pilots in the world – during the film, they pioneer new wingsuit flights in the European Alps and experience the highs and lows of a flying life. Finally, the future of the sport is envisioned, where scientists in Switzerland explain how pilots can soon achieve perfectly balanced and relatively safe flight paths using cruise-control autonomous systems and small engines.
'BIRDMEN' is the first documentary ever made that covers the past, present, and possible future of the sport.

DEUS EX HOMINE - San Francisco 3D Moco Time-lapse by Golden Gate 3D
This was a stereoscopic 3D motion-controlled time-lapse test for an upcoming IMAX 3D project. Ideally, it should be viewed in S3D.
View it in 3D at YouTube 3D: http://youtu.be/0quUxvXtHPw
You can select from various anaglyph (colored glasses) and stereo modes.
NVIDIA has chosen "Deus Ex Homine" as "Best 3D Video of 2011": http://www.3dvisionlive.com/content/best-3d-video-2011
If you have NVIDIA 3D Vision, you can also view at NVIDIA's 3D Vision Live, which offers a higher quality stream than YouTube: http://www.3dvisionlive.com/3d_video/deus-ex-homine-san-francisco-3d-moco-time-lapse
"Deus Ex Homine" comes from Latin meaning "god built by humans." That "god" might be the tools - our machines and technologies, the city - our caves of concrete and steel, and the networks - the highways and waterways that are the lifeblood of our cities. With our technology, we conquered and reshaped the natural world. As we have overrun our planet's surface, more and more of us live in the fantastically complex artificial biomes that are our cities. Modern societies and economies depend on these constructs. Bridges and servers connect us, cars and planes move us, farms and restaurants feed us, and cargo ships and oil tankers make it all possible. The "Makers" among us forge machines - electromechanical gods - that reshape and govern humanity. Automobiles. Typewriters. Computers. The Robot Maker creates machines in our image, striving to infuse them with intelligence, emotion, and sentience. Perhaps some day they will surpass us. They already have in many ways. Perhaps we will re-engineer ourselves, integrating man and machine. Deus ex homine (deus?).
Brad Kremer and Stewart Mayer of camBLOCK flew out for three days of shooting at the end of March. It rained the entire time they were in town so we were confined to interiors, which turned out to be a bit of a blessing in disguise since those shots turned out to be some of the more impressive ones in 3D. After the weather cleared, I shot for an additional nine days around San Francisco with assistance from Simon Christen, Noah Hawthorne, Christopher Fuzi, Robert Mooring, Josh Golz, and Paul Leeming.
Canon 5D Mark II's were used in both parallel and beamsplitter configurations for true, native stereo capture at 5.6K resolution RAW. The camBLOCK and Dynamic Perception were used for motion control. There were some major technical hurdles with both capture and post, but once we saw the results in 3D, it was well worth it.
Special thanks to Jeremy Mayer, Cisco Systems, Gather Restaurant, San Francisco Flower & Garden Show, The Millennium Tower, The Port of Oakland, and the San Francisco Film Commission for giving us access to some great locations and subjects on short notice.

Jeremy Mayer - Typewriter Sculptor
http://jeremymayer.com
http://twitter.com/JeremyMayer
Jeremy Mayer on Bust V (Grandfather): "The initial inspiration for the piece was that I wanted to create a self-portrait in my old age, so it's based on me, my dad, and my grandfather. I wanted to say something about aging, transition (particularly transition into new technology), and the place of the personal mechanical machine in modern society, all without making the piece look too 'robotic'. A lot of the sculpture I've done over the years has been ideal human figures: youthful, athletic, and kind of sexy. With this one I wanted to create a face that was more aged and worn, the face of a person who was tired, maybe a little forlorn and weary, but proud and dignified even after a life lived with a lot of difficulty and pain. With all of the news about the closing of the world's last manual typewriter assembly line, Godrej in India, and all of the buzz about typewriters in popular culture, I sense a great deal of nervousness in general about the advance of technology and what that means for people who are unwilling or unable to move on to the next step. I feel like this piece speaks of that worry in many ways."

Percebeiros (Sea Bites) 1920x1080
http://www.enpiedeguerra.tv/percebeiros/

DAVID BERIAIN Director
David Beriain is a Spanish war correspondent that has covered conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, Congo, Colombia and Kashmir, among others. He is currently in charge of coordinating the fea- ture section at Medina Media, a production com- pany based out of Spain.
Beriain is one of the few reporters in the world that has managed to infiltrate the FARC guerrilla camps in Colombia. His work there made him a finalist for the Bayeux-Calvados, the most pres- tigious international award for war correspon- dents. He has interviewed the Taliban command- ers who killed Spanish soldiers, met with the twelve-year-old hitmen that Colombian druglords exploit as child soldiers, and even accompanied the American Army on some of their most danger- ous military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. His latest TV documentary took him to Eastern Congo, where he covered the conflict between the Congolese Army and the rebels who fight, kill and rape in order to gain the control of the Coltan and Cassiterite mines.
During his time at Sea Bites, Beriain was in charge of producing the story and coordinating all the members in the team. He was the one who convinced everyone to get on board and as a true leader, he turned a group of people who did not know each other into a real team.

SERGIO CARO Director of photography
Sergio Caro is a Spanish photographer and cam- eraman. He is specialized in international con- flicts and illegal immigration in Europe. His 2005 photographs of Sub-Saharan immigrants being hauled away by bus to be abandoned in the desert won him the Visa D’Or at the International Photo- journalists Awards in Perpignan, one of the most prestigious ceremonies in the world. His photo- graphs have been published in renowned media such as Newsweek, Le Figaro or the Financial Times. As a television cameraman, he has cov- ered Iraq, Afghanistan and Congo together with David Beriain.
Together with Ernesto Villalba, he created Once Upon a Time, a multimedia company that por- trays unique characters from a very artistic point of view.
In Sea Bites, Caro’s ten years of experience al- lowed him to hang himself from the rocks just as the barnacle fishermen did and taking as many risks as they do. He also played the role of direc- tor of photography coordinating all the camera- men at work.
