Family Matters: Managing Self and Unexpected Life Cycle Events
Family Matters is a joint production of the Bowen Center for the Study of the Family and the University of the District of Columbia. Program host, Dr. Mariana Martinez and Bowen faculty member Ms. Priscilla Friesen explore why some families have more difficulty than others in their progression through life cycle; what makes one family different from the other in their capacity to navigate unexpected occurrences; how a family can stay on track, despite difficult circumstances; and the process of recovery from painful life events.
Ms. Priscilla Fraisen was introduced to the ideas of Murray Bowen in graduate school in social work at the University of Kansas. She moved from Kansas to Washington, DC in l978 to pursue her interest. She became an administrative assistant in the Biofeedback Program and participated in the postgraduate training program. Her early exposure to biofeedback has significantly influenced her understanding of Bowen theory and her focus on the physiology of relationships. She was appointed to the faculty in 1987. She was director of the Postgraduate Program in Bowen Family Systems Theory and its Applications from 1990-2003. Since 1994, she has been working with neurofeedback, an expansion of biofeedback that includes brain waves. This has led her into the study of evolution and development of the brain as well as how the body/mind/relationships operate in synchrony. Ms. Friesen presents in this area of knowledge in the training programs at the Family Center as well as around the country and abroad.

Friedman's Theory of Differentiated Leadership Made Simple
http://www.onlineacu.com
Dr. Jonathan Camp discusses the book A Failure of Nerve by Edwin Friedman, who owes many of his ideas of leadership to Murray Bowen (1913-1990), a pioneer of family therapy. Central to Bowen's family systems theory is the concept of differentiation, or the ability of a person to maintain a strong sense of "self" within the family. The anxious family system is composed of emotional triangles, in which two conflicting members try to diffuse the anxiety between them by bringing in a third member. But this only heightens the anxiety of the system. A well-differentiated person is able to resist the lure of emotional triangles, which causes the family system to mature by influencing others to take responsibility for themselves. In A Failure of Nerve, Friedman applies Bowen's family systems theory to organizational leadership.

Dr. Laurie Lassiter is a family therapist who in the 1980s trained with Murray Bowen, MD, whose systems theory was based in observations of the family and other human social systems as products of evolution. Dr. Lassiter began studying with Lynn Margulis in the 1990s to understand the most basic social systems: those of bacteria and other microorganisms. To her surprise, through her study with Dr. Margulis, she saw that the automatic, systematic processes that Bowen had identified in the social and reproductive systems of Homo sapiens are so basic that they occur on the level of today's representatives of earliest life: bacteria. This view contributed to new ways of understanding what she had observed in the human. This led to a chapter on Bowen theory in Chimeras and Consciousness, as well as more precise coaching with individuals seeking to see automatic processes in relationships more clearly in order to have more choice over them.
Dr. Richard Wilkie is professor emeritus of Geography in the Dept. of Geosciences at UMass. He was fortunate enough to co-teach with Lynn in two Evolution Geography seminars in 2010 and 2011. The courses looked at evolution within the context of all earth systems, with professor Wilkie concentrating primarily in how earth systems interconnect at the different latitudes, at different elevations and within continental ecological regions. A number of overlapping research themes have dominated Wilkie's research, teaching, and writing in recent years, centering on environmental perception and sense of place, spirit of place, and attachment to place, and on understanding human migration and urbanization processes in Latin America. His books include Latin American Population and Urbanization Analysis (1985) and Historical Atlas of Massachusetts (1991).
