The Chieftains - The Battle of Aughrim
My favourite Chieftains song, The Battle of Aughrim is considered the bloodiest battle in the history of Ireland and was fought at Aughrim in the County Galway in 1691 Forget not the field where they perished-- The truest, the last of the brave; All gone--and the bright hope they cherished Gone with them, and quenched in their grave. "Oh! could we from death but recover Those hearts, as they bounded before, In the face of high Heaven to fight over That combat for freedom once more-- "Could the chain for an instant be riven. Which Tyranny flung round us then-- Oh!--"tis not in Man, nor in Heaven, To let Tyranny bind it again! "But 'tis past; and though blazoned in story The name of our victor may be, Accurst is the march of that glory Which treads o'er the hearts of the free! "Far dearer the grave or the prison, Illumed by one patriot name, Than the trophies of all who have risen On Liberty's ruins to fame!"

Battle of Aughrim - Celtic Guitar - traditional Irish music
This here is a traditional piece of Irish music entitled "The Battle of Aughrim", named for the bloodiest battle in Irish history in which the Jacobite Army was defeated by the Williamite army and, subsequently, Ireland fell into control of the English (12 July 1691). This arrangement is based on the one I learned from Glenn Weiser. I recorded another version on a nylon guitar that is a bit softer, but this is a passionate tune so perhaps it's more suitable on the steel string. I'm still trying to figure out how to get the best sound recording with my Camcorder so it's a learning process. Thanks for listening check my page for more.

The Battle of Aughrim - Traditionel
. 03.04.08 this is a recording, just to find out, how the sound is recorded best from our camera. so never mind the *jokes*. but as one can clearly see - it is rather important to record someone right from the front - of course this was plain to everyone but me.... *lol*

Arran Boat / After the Battle of Aughrim - Tin Whistle
whistles used: -Walton D Little Black Whistle -Walton D brass whistle. these are two tunes I found on the internet last night, and I thought that they went well together. you know, like those songs that have a slow part, then a fast part, then a slow part again? yeah , like that. Only, the fast part didn't sound right on the mellow whistle, and the brass whistle was too shrill for the soft part. So I did a little editing :-).

Cherish The Ladies - The Battle of Aughrim/The Star above the Garter - Threads of Time.wmv
This delightful instrumental is from the album, "Threads of Time" which was originally released in 1998. The album is a nice mixture of traditional songs and original songs which have a Celtic feel to them. Their current tour (summer and fall of 2011) has Mary Black and The Black Family as featured guests. They are also planning a mega-Celtic music cruise this coming winter. Check it out! www.cherishtheladies.com/cruise2012.htm Enjoy!

A Scottish Lament
First music part: "Nathaniel Gow's Lament for his Brother" is a fiddle tune written about 1791 (when Gow's brother William died). They were two of the four sons of Niel Gow, the most famous Scottish fiddler of the 18th century. William was only 40 when he died - Nathaniel took over from him as leader of the Gow family band. This tune was taken to Ireland in the middle of the 19th century and got speeded up to become the jig "The Gallowglass". It makes a good jig, but didn't the Irish have enough of their own already?
Second must part: You got something very interesting in the second part of that. I was playing "Loch Torridon", and the regulars at the session know that tune and follow me.
Sandy Mathers isn't a regular, and assumed I was playing "After the Battle of Aughrim", which is better known outside Edinburgh. The first halves are the same, the second halves are different. Sandy was too far away for me to hear clearly what was going on, and I couldn't have done much about it anyway. So we had two different tunes going simultaneously, related through the historical connection I mentioned. Your microphone picked both of them up better than any of us players could hear.
I've heard people playing similar-sounding tunes together at sessions before but yours is the only recording of it I've ever heard of, and this is a very good example of how it happens. Neat.
Story and comments by Jack Campin.
Players:
Jack Campin (woodwinds, washboard) on the bench
George Current (moothies) ditto
John Shaw (clean-shaven fiddler) across the table from George
Sandy Mathers (fiddle) behind John Shaw
Others who may have been playing (can't remember for sure):
Graeme Adamson (grey bearded fiddler)
Dave (Not sure who?)
Tanya Fraser (blonde woman fiddler/whistle player)
Many thanks to the Sandy Bell’s from Edinburgh for filming.
Great apology for the one camera – one take only filming that constrained the editing of this piece.

Ahaha, well, this ate up my afternoon. But it wasnt nearly as frustrating as Blackthorn Stick. I think the percussion took the most time, because my computer wasnt cooperating with me and insisted on putting in the sound late, and then Id have to do re-takes, and...yes. xD I hope you enjoy it!

After the Battle of Aughrim
Buttermilk Junction Old-Time String Band™ playing the Irish traditional tune "After the Battle of Aughrim" in the 1872 Marine Creek one-room schoolhouse at the Log Cabin Village living-history museum in Fort Worth, Texas on a rainy Michaelmas Day afternoon, Saturday, September 29, 2012. This tune commemorates the 1691 Battle of Aughrim, near the village of Aughrim in County Galway. It was one of the bloodiest battles ever fought on Irish soil, with over 7000 killed. This was the decisive battle of the war between the Williamites under Protestant King William III of Orange and the Jacobites under Catholic King James II. The Battle of Aughrim resulted in a Williamite victory and the effective end of Jacobitism in Ireland.
