Permaculture Water Harvesting Through Swales
Geoff Lawton on the use of swales (shallow ditches) for passive water harvesting for individual farms in hot and dry climates. The genius is that it keeps water from evaporating, by storing it under ground, moving slowly through the soil, and keeping it available for extended periods of time. As much of Third World agriculture is still rain fed, this is a low cost alternative to huge government dams that need a lot of maintenance and create risks in dam failure. Where large irrigation dams disrupt people, the ecology, and cost millions to build, small on-farm water harvesting ditches like these can be put in place on any farm, whithout disrupting the area around it.

Permaculture Swale - #2 in my back yard, lined with wood hugelkultur style
bepreparedchannel.com This is the second swale in my backyard. This one we completed the digging, lined with cardboard or packing paper. Then placed small sticks, small logs up to about 4-6" in diameter, branches etc in the bottom of the swale. This is about 1-2' deep in branches in the bottom of this swale. This video shows what that looks like before we bury it in composted manure, peat moss, leaf litter, and then a layer of compost. I hope you find this helpful and useful. I will post a follow up video showing what this looks like once we have completed the layering.

Swales Part 1
It took me a while to really understand swales even though it's not a hard concept. Hopefully this video will help you out a little bit. It's a continuation of the dam building videos taken at Geoff Lawton's demonstration site, The Permaculture Research Institute Australia (PRI) but the video was taken after a 110mm overnight rainfall which filled the dam pretty 'dam' quickly haha. Urban Mini Swales
Swales hold up and soak water that would otherwise get away without doing any good work on your property. They are critical features in the design of any permaculture project but most of the applications you see on youtube are broad acre properties and many people might think thats what theyre reserved for. Not true! Small swales are very useful in urban gardens and can double as footpaths. Have a look at my video of Geoff Lawtons kitchen garden, which is a great example of how to improve your urban garden. Permaculture swale - manure, peat moss, leaf litter and mulched wood
Again sorry for the sound quality. The wind is really howling while I was doing this work. This video shows what the swale looks like now with the manure, peat moss, leaf litter, and some finely mulched wood all turned into the bed and watered down to try and keep it from blowing away. The wind is just crazy and all the materials going into this swale are very dry and powdery so stuff was blowing all over the place. This swale was dug on the side of a hill to capture the rainwater that naturally flows down the hill. We are in a high plains desert and the soil has almost no organic biomass in it and is hard as a rock. The pick axe just bounces off this soil it is so hard so there is a sense of accomplishment in each of these hand dug swales we are working on. Check out my blog at bepreparedchannel.com
