William Mellor (1888–1942) was a left-wing British journalist.

Mellor joined the Daily Herald in 1913 as a journalist, and was imprisoned during the First World War as a conscientious objector, returning to the Herald on his release. A Guild Socialist during the 1910s, he worked closely with G. D. H. Cole, founding the National Guilds League with him in 1915. He was a founder-member of the Communist Party of Great Britain in 1920, but resigned in 1924. He became editor of the Herald in 1926, succeeding George Lansbury when the Trades Union Congress took over the paper, and was fired in 1930 soon after Odhams Press took half-ownership with the TUC. He was the first editor of Tribune in 1937-38 and was sacked after falling out with Stafford Cripps over the latter’s proposals for a Popular Front of socialist and non-socialist parties against fascism. For the last 10 years of his life, though married with a family, he conducted an affair with the young Barbara Castle.

William Howard Taft (September 15, 1857 – March 8, 1930) was the 27th President of the United States (1909–1913) and later the tenth Chief Justice of the United States (1921–1930). He is the only person to have served in both of these two offices.

Before becoming President, Taft was selected to serve on the Ohio Superior Court in 1887. In 1890, Taft was appointed Solicitor General of the United States and in 1891 a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. In 1900, President William McKinley appointed Taft Governor-General of the Philippines. In 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt appointed Taft Secretary of War in an effort to groom Taft, then his close political ally, into his handpicked presidential successor. Taft assumed a prominent role in problem solving, assuming on some occasions the role of acting Secretary of State, while declining repeated offers from Roosevelt to serve on the Supreme Court.

Riding a wave of popular support for fellow Republican Roosevelt, Taft won an easy victory in his 1908 bid for the presidency.

William Harpin (Bill) Mellor (June 6, 1874 – November 5, 1940) was a Major League Baseball first baseman. Mellor played for the Baltimore Orioles in 1902. In 10 career games, he had 13 hits in 36 at-bats, with 5 RBIs. He batted and threw right-handed. Mellor attended both Brown University and the University of Virginia.

Mellor was born in Camden, New Jersey and died in Bridgeton, Rhode Island.

William H. "Chip" Mellor (born December 31, 1950) serves as President and General Counsel of the Institute for Justice, which he co-founded. Mellor received his B.A. from Ohio State University in 1973 and his J.D. from the University of Denver Law School in 1977. From 1979-1983, he practiced public interest law with Mountain States Legal Foundation in Denver. Following his time there, he served in the Ronald Reagan Administration as Deputy General Counsel for Legislation and Regulations in the United States Department of Energy.

From 1986 until 1991, Mellor served as president of the Pacific Research Institute for Public Policy, a think tank located in San Francisco, California. Under Mellor's leadership, the Institute commissioned and published books on civil rights, property rights, technology, and the First Amendment that would later serve as the Institute for Justice's long-term, strategic litigation blueprint.
