PROVINCETOWN —
Director David Drake brings “Our Town” to The Provincetown Theater in a production by CTEK Arts so fully rounded that you feel as if time itself has stood still while you were taking up residence in Grover’s Corners.
Every morning as dawn breaks, the audience learns to expect the “Good mornings” tossed out along Main Street, the breath of Bessie the cow in the air as she’s led to the barn by the milkman, Howie Newsome (Nathan Butera), and the thunk on the stoop as the paper gets thrown at you by Joe Crowell, the baseball-spouting paper boy (Eligh Foley).
The Stage Manager, played winningly by Beau Jackett, introduces the audience to the fictional town in New Hampshire created by Thornton Wilder. Throughout the play, the Stage Manager glides seamless through the fourth wall without the audience ever realizing that it’s been entirely knocked down.
As an example of the wonderful illusions of the play, a cornerstone in town has to get rebuilt and it’s a chance to put together a time capsule of sorts — a box of objects so that “people a thousand years from now” can discover what life was like in Grover’s Corners. In the box, the townspeople will put a copy of The New York Times, as well as a copy of the local Grover’s Corners Sentinel paper, whose editor, Mr. Webb (Tom Boland), figures prominently in town. The Stage Manager shows the last document. It’s a copy of the play itself, which will document, as the Stage Manager puts it, “The way we were: in our growing up and in our marrying and in our living and in our dying.”
Emily Webb (Kaitlin Varkados), the editor’s daughter, and George Gibbs (Andrew Clemons), the doctor’s son, have been neighbors since they were children. Their friendship blossoms inevitably into love during their last year in high school, when each of them expresses doubts about getting married, bringing up the play’s themes of how dreams must be contained by opportunity. It seems the play supports its homegrown proverbs that “People were made to be together two by two” and ‘T’ain’t natural to be lonesome.”
While the play freely hands out its heady themes, it remains truest to the idea that life is lived in the present tense. Drake’s timing, along with the timeless set, allows the audience to feel its central message fully. When Doc Gibbs (Aaron Tone) looks at the stars at night or George Gibbs and Emily Webb whisper to each other from their upstairs bedrooms under a full moon, George and Emily linger to make each moment count.
