The City Tavern is a replica of an historic 18th century building located at 138 South 2nd Street, at the intersection of Second and Walnut Streets in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Called the "most genteel tavern in America" by John Adams, it was the favorite meeting place of many of the Founding Fathers and of many members of the First Continental Congress. The City Tavern was built by subscription in 1773. It was partially destroyed by fire on March 22, 1834 and the structure was demolished in 1854. The entire building was reconstructed in the 1970s and re-opened in 1976 for the Bicentennial as a functioning tavern and restaurant.
Owner and Executive Chef Walter Staib cooks a variety of entrees using authentic 18th century recipes, served in seven period dining rooms, three wine cellar rooms and an outdoor garden.
City Tavern was featured in The Riddle of Penncroft Farm by Dorothea Jensen. In it, it was the place where Will spied on the British during their occupation of Philadelphia in 1777 while pretending to be an apprentice of Little Smith. "Little Smith" was, in real life, the name of its first owner.
Haven't you heard there's a new love for me
Haven't you heard you're just my used to be
She held out her hand said haven't you heard
I saw gold wedding band I was lost forward
I wanted to cry I wanted to die when she said these words oh haven't you heard

Little heart you've been broken many times before
But the wound always heals no matter how sore
But this time is different and I can't tell you why
Eat drink and be merry tomorrow you'll cry

How many time have you heard someone say
If I had his money I could do things my way
But little they know that it's so hard to find one rich man in ten with a satisfied mind
